50 Things to Add to Local Lenses

Updated on October 6, 2012

Ideas to Personalize a Local Squidoo Lens

The key to a great local lens on is personalization. There are a lot of things about your town/city/area that people want to know about. Your town is rich with content!

These are a few ideas of things you could include in your squidoo local lens. Use a few or many, or dive into a topic to make a highly specialized guide to your town.

The Images of America Series

The Images of America books feature one local community and delve into its history. There are Images of America books available for communities across the country.

Check to see if your zip code has its own Images of America, or similar type, book to include in your lens.

Local Lens With A Specific Focus - Local Niche

When making your local lens, keep in mind that there can be more than one lens for each place - an infinite number in fact. So, if there is already a lens about your city, don't be scared away. Your lens will surely be different.

Some areas have just so much there that one lens could never cover it all. Consider making a lens on a specific aspect of the community.

A few ideas:

  • The Karaoke Guide to Las Vegas
  • The Art Guide to Seattle
  • The College Student Guide to NYC
  • The Gay & Lesbian Guide to Chicago
  • The Nightlife of Miami
  • The Single Gal's Guide to Atlanta
  • Things to Do With Your Kids in Houston
  • Architecture Tour of Williamsburg
  • Important Sites from American History in Philadelphia

I don't know that I'll ever write one, but it's cool to know they exist. I'm going to see if anyone has made one in my region.

@Kiwisoutback: Yes, if the URL of the lens were:

      you would enter 05733..BrandonVT

@kerbev: Update: Okay, it seems like we can't make new ones, but old ones are working as usual. Sorry, I hadn't realized.

I couldn't remember how to add Squidzippers to the Discovery feature -- any ideas on how to do that?

@DonMcCyclist1: Hmm. I see what you mean. Squidzippers still look like squidzippers though. Other co-brands which were removed had their lenses go back to the default template. I'll see what I can find out.

I'm running into some dead links related to squidzipper. Is this co-brand still available? Or is there only one squidzipper per zip code, and they're all taken? Thanks for your work, Kab! Look forward to when you can update it!

I've made lots of lenses about small towns in Kansas. Probably should have made them on squidzipper's format. Sigh.

I am very glad OhMe and others decided to promote SquidZipper. In my dreamy existence I never investigated what it meant and thought I had enough with squidlit, magicbuilder, quickbuilder and best-ever. I will definitely give it a go... Thanks so much for all the tips and suggestions in this lens!

[in reply to Spook] No, Spook. This is not using the word "zip" in a computer sense as in compressing, it is using it in the United States postal code sense, "zip code". SquidZipper lenses are lenses on local topics in the US. They work just like any other lens, but have their own template. People start out with a zip code of the area they want to discuss and then make a lens about that area or something in that area.

In truth am finding it a bit hard to get my head around all of this. Does it mean, a lens one made on another format you can zip it somewhere else or what? I have many lenses on a local theme but not in Squidzipper. Still have more to do so perchance may try it, once I have taken the pics.
