An Ode to HubPages & AdSense

Updated on July 1, 2013

How do I love thee? Let me count the ways...

An Ode to HubPages

I stumbled upon your pages

You really caught my eye.

I read and browsed and clicked on Hubs

And decided to give it a try.

HubPages is right up my alley

Conversing about all kinds of stuff.

Though I never could’ve imagined

Getting started would be so tough.

I had all kinds of things to say

And published a Hub or two;

But getting approved for AdSense

Was SUPER hard to do.

Denied, denied, denied,

Each and every day.

So I just kept applying

Hoping my persistence soon would pay.

Today must be my lucky day

I spotted an unfamiliar sight

My application was ACCEPTED

Now I can sleep tonight!

To all you fellow newbies

Please never walk away

If you try and try and try some more

Tomorrow may be your day!

      Au fait,

I agree, HP could do a little better of a job with ‘getting started 101’. I just signed up and then kind of thought; Okay, now what do I do… I only found out what I happened to stumble across. There were so many things I was doing wrong or could’ve been doing better and I wasn’t even aware of the ‘HP Share’ button until I had been here a few months, I didn’t realize they were clickable words and I now use it all the time.

Yes, people will definitely benefit from reading about your experience; I hope my words didn’t come off offensive. I see people stressing in the forums, daily, about confusion, AdSense, scores, etc. I remember simply reading about AdSense, what it was and that it was needed. Nowhere did I read to ‘hold off applying’ for any amount of time and so I thought I was doing something wrong each time I got denied. I’m starting to sense this happens to many other people as I read about it often in the forums. Now, after looking back myself, I think… well, you’ve only just got here and have very few hubs; it seems so obvious to me now… ha ha.

Oh yes, the unrealistic expectations… lol. I see people asking how long it takes to make hundreds of dollars and month and things of that nature all the time. Sadly, it doesn’t work that way, but I think the information on the internet about HP, depending on where you find it, leads many to think, all they have to do is write some articles and the money will come pouring in.

I think there is a diverse group of people here and many have different strategies; what works for one, may not work for another. However, I wish HP could get a grasp on the fly by nights and the scammy/spammy type that are not willing to invest any real time, energy, talent or effort into the community. When I read a hub that is clearly written on a ‘trending’ topic, but it’s extremely short and words are spelled terribly wrong, not to mention… no new information provided; I get frustrated how careless people will be in an attempt to ‘get rich quick’.

Yes, there are a lot of good people here and I can say, I see a lot more good than bad. I don't want the people who use HP inappropriately to drag down the integrity or quality of the site or the hubbers.

Most of us, if not all of us, are ignorant about a lot of things on HP when we first arrive here. We all have to learn. I think HP doesn't make that process as easy as they could. Finding certain information isn't always that easy. It's easier now than when I started over 2 years ago, but even now it's still not easy.

I just thought other people might benefit from reading about my experience. Maybe they would have fewer frustrations if they knew applying for an AdSense account first thing isn't likely to be successful. They could instead use their energy to write some good hubs and move forward in other ways.

Of course some people are impatient to get started making money because they believe they have found an easy way to do that and that their financial problems will soon be over due to writing on HP. I have read questions from people who say they have written and published 2 hubs and so far, they have received hardly any views and no money. When does it start? Unrealistic expectations.

Why HP allows/fosters those unrealistic expectations I do not know. They apparently want to sign people up that badly, but if those people are going to become discouraged and disgruntled because they were misled to some extent, and then they either stop writing or just leave, where is the advantage in signing them up without being straight forward and truthful?

There are a lot of good people here.

      Au fait,

Thanks :D I have to admit I was lost and ignorant when I started here. To be honest, while roaming around the internet I ran into an Ad for HubPages and the only thing that really caught my eye was 'Write' and 'Get Paid'. I was already 'dabbling', barely, with a couple of random sites and 'profit' was what I came here for... how was I to know what it'd be like once I got here? I did nothing but research the website through search engines to see if it was legit and I opened an account after I was convinced it was safe. I through together a mediocre profile and wrote about what was currently on my mind, some injustice in the world or something to that affect, I'm sure. As I was aimlessly wandering around the site, I read something about Google AdSense being necessary to 'make money' here. I thought signing up for all the affiliate programs was just a part of 'getting started on HP', so I signed up. I think I signed up after only one hub, maybe two... lol. What an idiot; of course, I thought that was the norm... sign up for HP, sign up for AdSense. Anyway, I had received my denial within a couple of days and probably a hub later. I was frustrated and didn't like that there was very limited explanation as to why. I took it very personally and immediately applied again. I continued to write hubs in between my numerous AdSense denials and at one point, I believe I had been Red Flagged for applying so much... do you think I'd stop? NOPE! lol... I kept writing hubs and kept applying; the only difference is the denials started coming in within hours now, instead of days. I was only here a few weeks and I don't believe I even had 10 hubs once I was finally approved, but I think they just wanted me to leave them alone! lol After being here a bit longer, I realize how things work and I can see how I was being unrealistic and ridiculous. I now see people stressing out about this all the time in forums and I try to reassure them that it takes a little time and to continue writing 'quality' hubs and participating in the community and it'll come. At this point, the money would be great, but it's no longer my motivation here... I just like to write and share and read others' hubs. I do think it's a one of a kind community... and I'm sure it'll make me rich someday! :p

      Thanks again,

      Cat

When I first registered on HP, I read in the forums that people who have published 10-15 hubs and who have been on HP for at least 3-6 months have better luck being accepted by AdSense. I had been writing for 6 months, registered on HP for 10 months, and I think I had around 20 hubs published when I applied for AdSense. I was accepted within 4 or 5 days, no denials.

One thing that AdSense seems to like to do is to wait and see the quality of hubs a person is writing. What is the subject matter and how well is it written? Does the person seem like they'll stick with it?

You may be aware that a lot of people register with HP only to be banned shortly thereafter. Some have written a hub or two, some have written nothing. Some just come to HP to write a few lines to promote their own website or blog elsewhere. That won't get them an AdSense account and will likely get them unpublished for starters, and fairly quickly.

Most newbies do not have the patience it would seem, to research how HP works. Of course 'they' are always changing things so that we must be constantly learning in order to keep up, and no one I know knows everything. But taking the time to learn a few things before writing, and before applying for an AdSense accounts works better I think. No need to wait as long as I did -- I studied on it for 4 months before I published anything, but taking the time to learn how things work can save a lot of frustration.

      Cute poem.

Thank you! Well, I'm not the most eloquent of writers, so I try to at least make things look pretty... ya know distract the reader :-)

Actually, right on your "Edit Profile" page, you have a few options already available. I took an image from elsewhere, saved it to my pictures on my own computer and uploaded that from the same section under "Edit Profile", it's quite easy... if you need further help, give me a shout!

      Thanks for stopping by!

I know that I see people stressing and asking for help about getting into Google Adsense a lot, probably at least once a week. I wish I could grab them all and say "hang in there"! No one really knows what to expect when the start at Hubpages and I think many people, like myself thought that you just apply and get in and when you don't, feel like you're doing something wrong. Thanks for your comments!

I know how it feels to be frustrated but I don't know yet about being denied acceptance into Google AdSense since I haven't tried to apply yet. I still lack many more hubs. I also know what it's like to be really happy about something. And I really hope that all those who want to get accepted into Google AdSense finally gets their applications accepted.

Thank you! Keep doing what you're doing and I'm sure you'll get in! I think I was ignorant and misunderstood the Adsense process. I thought that it was just a part of starting up with HubPages, but Google wants to make sure that you are worth investing time and energy in. My advice is just keep writing great hubs and apply again! Good luck!

      mr-veg,

Hi! I've had a tab open with your newest hub, attempting to get to it all day, but of course, I am so easily distracted.

It's funny because I thought that applying for adsense was something you just do when you get into HubPages. It wasn't a matter of trying to make money for me it was a matter of being rejected for something that I thought I was supposed to be applying for. I was feeling "Well what's wrong with me?" :-)

Yeah right happy? I have just rounded into the $4.00 range. Money would be super awesome for being here anyway, but I'm not going out of my way to try to market anything or make a huge profit. If it slowly trickles in I'll be happy.

Looking back, I'm not even sure if they truly inspect your content or if they simply look for a certain amount of articles before they're willing to approve you. I think I was unrealistic in trying to get in so early, but I thought it was a regular part of the process... Sign up for HP, make some hubs, set up affiliate sales sites and apply for Adsense. I took it very personally and stubbornly applied every single time I got a denial, which had to be about 50 times. What was really frustrating was that I always received the same denial "You don't have sufficient content... try later". Well, they really didn't help me understand what I needed to do to have sufficient content, I guess sufficient just means "enough". Keep doing what you're doing and you'll get there! I'm certain!!!

My dearest Colin who touches all of this Cat's nine lives, my lyrical happenings are nothing compared to the magic you create.

I thought signing up for Adsense was just a part of the HP program and I wanted al my ducks in a row. Sure, I thought money would be nice but never expected to make any (and I probably won't), but the rejection stink; "Nope, sorry you're not good enough", read that email every 2 days :-(

You, with your followers, your ability to pound out the hubs and your magic with words, should be making tons of money. I'm sure you find enough pleasue and satisfaction in the writing and community alone, as do I, but if someone wants to give you money too that's a bonus. You really should get it fixed.

You are such a gentleman, so sweet, so witty. I am honored to be in your good graces.

My day is well, the sun is shining brightly though it is trying to run away into the night. How lovely, a walk on the beach with your deaf cat, well this Cat isn't deaf and she is listening to your every word ;-)
