HubPages: One Year Anniversary

Updated on June 1, 2013

Guess Who?

The Journey

I am just about to complete my first year here at HubPages. I have enjoyed creating hubs and learning how to navigate this content site. I have learned a great deal about writing, topics and even SEO. I want to share what I have loved about writing on this site, my results and what my writing future holds here at HubPages and elsewhere.

The HubPage Community

There are so many positive things to say about this wonderful community. I have made some very special cyber friends, who have encouraged and supported me through challenging times. Two other hubbers even wrote hubs about me. I feel almost like a celebrity. I could never leave Hubpages totally as I would miss this wonderful community of writers.

I have learned a lot by reading other hubs, and explored new topics. I am thoroughly in awe how writers have taken difficult topics and created interesting articles. I am not going to mention names here of all the wonderful people I love, as there are so many writers and I don't want to leave any out.

My Current Results at HubPages

To date I have written 157 hubs.

I have 41,000 views

I earn about $14.00 a month

My writer score goes from 93-97

My highest views on one hub is 2800.

I have only 3 hubs over 1000 views.

Most of the hubs hover around 200 to 600 views

I mostly get about 150 views a day and sometimes a little more

Since tweaking all my hubs there has been no increase in views

My Writing Niches at HubPages

Astrology is my main writing niche and the second one is recipes.

I have written several hubs on retirement, family issues, health issues, cleaning solutions and hubpage community issues.

What I have done to Improve Views

I have tweaked my hubs on an ongoing basis. Last month I went over every hub and improved photos, content, grammar, spelling and seo.

I read other hubs for ideas and quality.

I have created a niche with over 25 hubs on Astrology.

I have promoted my hubs on social networks.

Results and Plans

I have been working to improve my hubs, and the views have gone down by 10 percent. True, I have slowed down in producing more hubs, but I had hoped the older hub views would increase in numbers.

I average between 150 and 200 views a day, which is a poor response for the number of hubs I have written. Needless to say I am discouraged. The disappointment of the lack of views has been the strongest influence in my current feelings.

As I said I am not quitting here as I will continue to comment on my good friend's hubs, I would never give up my friendships here as they are very special. I will start writing here again whenI get renewed inspiration. It is inspiring to write here to share ideas and develop a portfolio of articles, and when you see people are continuing to search the titles you have chosen.

Here are a few of my projects:

I am working on a book.

I am working on my astrology designs to put on t-shirts.

I am going to set up a website soon.

I am thinking seriously of doing some videos for Utube.

I write for three other sites

I love you all and I am still here, and tomorrow I could change my mind and start writing up a storm---------I am kind of like that.

Hi Carol7777, Good luck to you, I personally like your writing skills, sometimes I noticed on hub-pages it's not so much of the writing skills, but what readers enjoy reading about, such as how to projects of technology etc., these are the ones that get the most hits so please don't be discourage you writing abilities are excellent hope you soon will complete your book, keep your head up high and happy holidays to you... I also appreciate our warm and supportive community here on HP! I understand your frustration. Although quality Hubs are important, sometimes success on HP seems to be a "crapshoot"....but I think that's across the board with online writing. I wish you success on all your endeavors!

Hi Carol, i love the way you share all the status with complete honesty. I am curious to know what alternatives you have other than hub pages since google has effected all the writing websites equally. I don't think there is any other writing websites better than hub pages. Do you have any suggestion ?

Dear Carol, I know exactly how you feel. I will be here 2 years in October, my how time has flown. I am thinking of doing the same thing, taking a break from here at least. I haven't written a new hub in 2 months now, I just can't get excited about it any more. I went from $5. a day to .50 a day in March and it just isn't getting any better. I can't say as I blame HubPages, as I believe they are doing everything they can to improve the situation, but Google seems to rule the online writing world and apparently they are frowning on writing sites such as HubPages and others.

You are a wonderful writer and a very sweet, good person. I know there are many wonderful things awaiting you! I look forward to seeing you here from time to time, at least to visit and I hope your other endeavors work out for you.

Hopefully, one day HubPages will be back to what it once was and we will be excited to be here again. Good luck my friend and take care!

      Hi Carol.

Thank you for sharing so much and in such an honest way. I too, along with many others have just reached or passed our first year on HP and I see a lot of great writers are no longer publishing , sadly many have the same tale to tell, me included. Many have also written their fond farewells to the virtual friends they have made here, it is in all honesty a great community if not a great money earner.

I wish you all the very best for the future and hope your new paths prove to be a success.

I will say hasta luago rather than adios as I know you will be dropping in from time to time once you have had a well earned rest and the dust of your emotions has settled.

157 hubs in one year is a huge amount Carol and maybe you are just temporarily burned out.

Take care dear and put your feet up for a while :)

From the volume of heartfelt comments here on your anniversary hub, it is clear that you have achieved enormous popularity in just one short year. Carol, I always enjoy your hubs and I'm delighted that you've reached the level of payout, as so many I know have not. Understandable that you will be cutting back on your writing and working harder on your personal art and sales. Please stick around and see what will become of your earnings when the traffic sources really find you.

Did I comment on this? I know I read it after it came out. I get disappointed at times, too, but I know that things go up and down. There are times I have been excited and pleased, too. I think it's important to have other plans, to have projects to work on, as you mention. If we keep it all in perspective, that HubPages is just one of our writing venues and income streams, then maybe that will help. I'm trying to branch out more, too, even though I still want to keep improving on HP! Great hub. Thanks for sharing your first year.

I agree with you, and I also writer for another site pay per article. Nice to get paid for what you write. I love to write, but don't write for the fun of it as I have so many other things to do, The site I write for is expanding so there will be more dollars to make and articles to write. Sometimes I get an idea and want to write a hub, but think of the small return. I have 2 hubs that have really gotten a lot of views..and cannot figure out why. Maybe when we come thru Vegas at some point..be fun to meet and chat a while...I have over 150 hubs and making 14-15 per month ...wow not so good. However, iti s a good place to create a writing portfolio..Thanks for always being a supportive friend here.

Carol, I completely understand your need to step back and spend time with other endeavors. I am also on sabbatical from HubPages after spending a year learning and writing in the apprenticeship program. I'm up to 113 Hubs and just don't have the time and energy to invest in creating more content when the return on investment is so low. I have a part-time job in the "real world" and write for a another company on a pay-per-article basis. For the time being, I will sit back and watch my measly Hubpages $$ accrue each month and may return someday when my batteries have recharged. I've enjoyed reading your informative Hubs and value your friendship. Good luck as you move forward! :)

Well Carol I must say I think you have done incredibly well for one year on hub pages. Obviously you have written a large number of hubs in that time and I can understand your lack of enthusiasm with your $14.00 per month. Have to tell you I would be over the moon with that and I have been here over 2 years, but I have not written many hubs. One of my hubs recently got the not good enough quality sign beside it and that made me want to stop writing. That particular hub has been here for well over a year. Have to say I was somewhat p....d off!

      Carol,

I've been here for just under 2 years and am just coming back from a five month break. That's the beauty of HubPages. You can take a break to relax and catch your breath then pick up right where you left off when you want to write here again. It can be frustrating to put in all of that work for what appears to be so little reward but the beauty of it is that you'll still accumulate those payments even when you aren't writing here.

By the way, I love your hubs. I don't comment on all of them but I do read them. :)

Most of all I love your honesty Carol, you have been a prolific writer here in my book due to such honesty and integrity you maintain and no matter how many hubs you write. Some of the most successful hubber haven't even wrote more than 150 articles here, which is no joke when you think about how hard it is today to earn a digi-buck here.

Thanks for sharing you 1 year anniversary hub here on approach, it is a good thing to reflect from time to time about our experience for sure.

I wish you loads of inspiration that is sure to come, and I will not be preparing a Hub love hub this time for ya :) instead this message shall suffice.

Oh and thanks for not quitting, that would be a horrible loss to us all.

I will however share on goal of mine with you, maybe it can help with a tad bit of that inspiration. I'm working on a Novel here, maybe if you give such a thing a try on Hubpages it can rejuvenate them writing juices and motivation.

I only write mostly on my smart phone for this novel and when I have moments of idled times like at a grocery store, or shopping for something and wating for my wife. It's awesome to experiment with writing in such a way, and you never know what you can manage to churn out in the end. Good luck no matter what!

Hi Carol! Congratulations on your 1 year anniversary on Hubpages!

I heard or I read somewhere that google is contributing to the lack of visibility we have on hubpages. That would explain why you see so little traffic! It's a great idea to have your own website with a blog (inside of your website); that would bring traffic toward your website. Youtube is a great tool to also bring traffic toward your website but I think hubpages can also bring traffic toward your website. It doesn't mean that you have to continue at the rate you did over the past year but you could combine and rewrite some of your blog articles to make one hub for example.

Because of one of your questions on hubpages, I realized I didn't click on what was necessary to have some revenue on hubpages.... I am way far behind you and I am all excited because I earned around 1 $ each of the last two months :-)

I am trying to produce one video per week on my youtube channel since January and I can really see an improvement on the level of traffic. Because there is a lot of preparations and I always produce in two languages, I can't produce more than one video per week. And also because I create other art projects on my website.

The secret with youtube is regularity in posting.

I wish you the best of luck with your projects!

      Have a wonderful weekend!

thank you Bill. I am sure that Hubpages does not like us talking about our adventures here and results. I will still write occasionally when the mood hits. Carol, each time you have taken the time to share the amount of hours you have dedicated to Hubpages in comparison to the rewards, it always leaves me in a profundity of thoughts! I was sincerely hoping that by then things would have turned around dramatically, but again was really surprised at the result!

For me, I have been here for an amount of 4 years, and is still waiting for my dream to materialize, but I guess it's going to be a very long journey. Although I have been tweaking a few of my old hubs here and there, I haven't written a new hub for quite awhile. I think this is primarily out of frustration. Anyway, I must honestly admit that although I haven't perfected my writing skills to the point where I would some day like to be, I have been doing much better than I was a few years ago - thanks to this writing platform. I have also gotten the opportunity to meet some wonderful people including yourself, which I am really appreciative of.

Last but not least, I would like to let you know that you are a very talented writer, so despite the fact that you might be struggling here, that doesn't mean you will elsewhere. I encourage you to write as many books as possible, and maybe some audio books. Best of luck, and God bless!

Congratulations on your first anniversary as a HubPages writer, Carol! You're doing almost three times better than me per month. Sad but true. The first few months, I kicked myself in the butt, like "What's wrong with me?" But now I just quit expecting so much out of HP and remember my roots--simply, I love to write. In addition to the opportunity to write and quickly get published, I have met the most wonderful and intriguing people here in the HP community, you included.

Thank you for your kind hub letter. I wish you the very best in whatever paths you follow. You've been a kind, honest, and wonderful pen pal. Aloha, Carol!

Carol, I have learned so much from you, and I love the way that you write. I can totally understand your reasons for cutting back, though. But it sounds like you have a lot of exciting projects on the horizon. Bravo! I have said before that you are a person of many talents; so I can definitely see that you need new creative outlets for those talents.

I wish you all the very best of luck in your new endeavors, and look forward to your continuing presence here on Hubpages. This place would not be the same without your beautiful smiling face, my friend ;) Pearl

This was a nice summary, Carol. I enjoy reading your writing, so I hope you will still post from time to time. I am someone who writes first and hopes to make money from it second, but I can understand that people want to earn money. You are earning much more than I! I hope you are able to find the avenue that allows you to express your feelings and feel the reward you need, but know we are here for you too!

      Carol,

I always look forward to your Hubs and I'm glad you're sticking it out. A lot of folks abandon HP when they find out they're not going to make bank overnight.

I have edited a lot of my old Hubs and deleted even more of them but I find that editing isn't as helpful as using the title tuner. I just "tuned" up a few of them last night, and two of the five have red arrows beside them today. Adding polls, good images and even videos does help.

Anyway, I'm very glad to have e-met you. You seem like an amazing person and there is almost always something I can learn from your writing. :)

Wow, Carol, I didn't realize how close we started together. I hit my first year anniversary on May 29th! Not counting the apprenticeship program, I am earning half of what you are earniong. While I would love to have even a meager income from this, like you, I feel the relationships I have made, have been invaluable and I cannot discount the Apprenticeship program which has taught me so much here. I do feel trhat I have been neglecting my own website which may or may not payoff but, like you, I will be loyal to the hubbers that I have gotten to know and care about. Up+

      Hi Carol,

You have been a shining light here on HP and the community here looses a much loved and respected writer and friend. Having known you for sometime here I know the doubts and concerns you have had. HP has changed considerably in the past year and many great writers are no longer with us which I am saddened by.

Your passion and enthusiasm for writing what interests you and what you love shines through with your natural ability to connect to other's, a gift not many possess.

You and I have future ideas together which will come to fruition, of that I am certain so it is not farewell, oh no . . . You will be sorely missed from publishing here regularly but you have other projects to pursue so take care and rest assured you have a friend in me and many friends on HP whenever you feel like popping in with a hub or two!

Carol: I can understand how you feel. HP advertises more than it really comes forth with, especially financially, but most of us write here because we love the writing community and for the freedom to publish what we want. I have enjoyed reading you hubs and you are a great writer. Your future projects sound great and lots of fun. Let us know your website when you are set up so we can visit. I hope you change your mind someday and return to write here. Your hubs will be missed.

      Hi Carol

Congratulations on your one year here and thanks for writing this.

Thanks also for sharing your stats over the year and my own are more or less the same.

Having just reached the same milestone I have also taken stock and can only agree with your findings in that the rewards for the amount of work and effort involved in producing the required standard of articles doesn't compare in any way with what is fair.

It is obvious from your hubs that the work and quality are there and I am very sad that genuine effort is not rewarded as it should be.

Perhaps HP survives on writers coming and going but I would think the fair thing is to reward those who support this site with their efforts.

This community is wonderful and I also have met wonderful people such as yourself and "Sir Bill". Your presence will be sorely missed.

I wish you every success in your other ventures and as Bill said "we will meet you down the road".

      MJ.

Carol, I understand completely. You have been one of the most diligent Hubbers I have known in my time here. I can attest to your willingness to learn and to improvee, and you have worked hard during your year. The meager rewards you have received underscore the fact that HP is not a writer-friendly site. I am greatly discouraged with HP because of the treatment that some writers have received, and the lack of rewards they receive.

As you know, I am not here to make money, but I fully understand the disappointment that some writers feel when they do not see monetary reward.

I am proud to be your friend and am very grateful for your loyalty over this past year.

I know this isn't goodbye, so take care and I'll see you around the next turn in the road.

      Wow, Carol,

Appears that you have had one awesome year here on HubPages!!!

Plus, with everything else you have going on, which sound like amazing projects for your benefit, makes your year here even more impressive!

I understand though, about the older hubs, views and money too, in addition to having assess all of that in light of all of the other projects you have in the works.

I hope you do not leave, but I do hope you the best in any and all of your endeavors.

      Blessings, Faith Reaper

Carol, I've been here for a year and a half and still haven't earned my first $50, although I have a hubscore of 99. I've reached 99 four times now, but according to my calculations, I probably won't see my first HP paycheck for another 4-5 months. Needless to say, I earn my writer's living outside HP. What I love about HP is the community and my freedom to write from the heart. I can write in the first person, which you can't do when you write content articles. I also have the choice to follow SEO rules or not. I'm here for the creative release HP provides for me. It gives me practice in honing my skills in order to move onto the next phase in my writer's journey.

I hope you continue to post. I've only posted 105 hubs in the time I've been here. I would love to make money by my HP pieces, but perhaps I can present some of them to magazines and newspapers and hit pay dirt there.

Believe it or not, you're doing better than you think.

Sorry to see you cut back, Carol - I love your hubs, and have really enjoyed you being here in this community. I do hope you'll still hang out on HubPages, and continue to write - even if not as often.
