Four Months on HubPages Pays Off!

Updated on May 30, 2013

Surfing the internet late one night, about four months ago, I stumbled upon the World of HubPages. Only at that time, I didn’t realize it was a world, but just another site, among thousands of others in cyberspace. Hmm, write about whatever I want to and potentially get paid for it, is this too good to be true? There have been many occasions that I have started something that seemed like a good idea but quickly grew tired and/or found no instant gratification, which unfortunately, is much of what motivates me. I apprehensively signed up, though I was excited I wondered if it would be something I’d stick with or just another site saved to my ‘Favorites’ folder, along with several others.

What's This?

HubPages is different or at least it made the right kind of impression on me. Sure, it’s easy to be a little overwhelmed starting; creating a profile, signing up for Adsense and other affiliate programs and then, there’s actually creating a hub. A hub? One quickly wonders what she should write about. For me, I joined after a recent run of tragic events and my frustration with people, society and the world we currently live in, gave me reason to speak out, or scream rather; hence the nom de plume ‘Cantuhearmescream’.

Making Money

SEO, a previously foreign word and concept to me, I soon learned is an acronym for Search Engine Optimization. I began to realize that there are many methods to success, but perhaps the most suggested is knowing the audience, what’s popular but not too popular, creating too much competition and of course, appropriate keywords that will be attractive to search engines. I spent one day investigating this theory and then, as quickly as I could, I attempted to erase all that new knowledge from my brain to allow room for information I’d actually like to store in my memory! All the aforementioned might just be the key to many successes but it’s not for me. I decided, I’m just going to write, write about whatever happens to be on the top of my head asking to come out. In having this approach, I have been able to write about what I’d like to consider serious and potentially important issues, I’ve written useless comedic hubs, I’ve been given the opportunity to play in the field of poetry and then just simply, other miscellanious topics that tickle my fancy. What’s my niche? Nothing and everything, all at the same time. Making money is awesome, who would disagree, but by the end of the first week on HubPages, I decided, it was not my priority. If I should make money along the way, excellent, if not, no real loss.

Where's the payoff?

So here I am, four months into HubPages and I think I’m starting to get the hang of it. I’ve got some awesomely beautiful followers for which, each one I am grateful and I am lucky to be following a wonderful group of people as well. I’ve got a good handful of hubs under my belt and I’ve even earned a few accolades. By now, I’m sure you’re wishing I’d get to my point; the payoff. Here it is:

Funding my trip?

Yesterday provided me with the perfect opportunity to utilize my HubPage earnings. Now, as you may or may not know, both HubPages Ad Program and Google Adsense will pay hubbers based on some version of traffic to their site. I had to run out for a bit and knew I was in need of gas. What better way to fund my trip than with my earnings from HP? First I must tell you, I was well beyond needing gas and irresponsibly left myself on Empty. Please refer to the photograph below. The gas guage reads empty and the handy dandy fuel light is on (Disclaimer – this picture belongs solely to me, as evident by the dust build up, due to all my time invested on HubPages, rather than giving my car the much needed cleaning it deserves.)

Prior to the Gas Station

In the below capsule you will find a photograph of the same gauges, after my gas purchase, funded by my HubPage earnings. Please refer to the picture below.

After the Gas Station

Please be aware, my gauges all work appropriately and my vehicle was recently inspected and is in accordance with New York State DOT requirements. (That's Department of Transportation, for those of you who didn't know).

Please also note the increase in speed traveled as my journey home was more than 40 miles and I had already utilized all of my HubPage earnings on gas. My theory, while proven incorrect by the stern advice of NYS Police, the faster one drives a car, the better chance they will have of getting to their destination before running out of gas. For those of you who are those particularly intelligent types, you will be apt to tell me that excessive speed actually works on the contrary and requires more gas. Thank you in advance; duly noted.

Also please note the difference in mileage on the tripometer. This is the actual reading after the gas station :-(

Okay, the Cat’s out of the bag, you got me! I made a funny! The truth of the matter is that I haven’t yet earned enough on HubPages to cash out, but with any luck… it will afford me the opportunity to get that shiny new ball for Christmas that my kids have been patiently waiting for.

Tomorrow, I try to save the world. Today… I just want to be funny!

If you would like to try saving the world with me, I invite you along.

On a serious note.... almost

All joking aside, I love HubPages and the people here. I might not be getting rich in the way so many desire, but I have met and befriended some seriously awesome people that I couldn't imagine not knowing... to those people and you know who you are (if you question that I'm talking to you... err on the side of YES!)

Thank you!

Thank You

I think we all want instant gratification for sure...that is why successful affiliate marketers and bloggers are few - most people don't put a ton of effort into something that does not pay off quickly.

I was believing you about the gas thing! I wish you a ton of success here!

That's the story of my life, Cat! The empty gas gauge . . .hehe. . . Wanna know how sad that is? When my oldest was learning to push cars around as a little tot, he started making a sound that kind of sounded more like a machine gun. When asking what he was doing, his reply was, "Car outta gas." Yep. Poor child recognized the sound our vehicle made as it sputtered to a halt. LOL

      Relationshipc,

The desire for instant gratification gets me in trouble! :D You are so right though. I notice a lot of the reasoning behind the need for instant gratification is laziness. My thoughts are, if this isn’t going to do it, what will? I stay busy trying to find the “answer” :-)

That was really before and after pictures :D lol!

Thank you so much!!! I wish the same for you and I’m past due for a trip your way… I just won’t use my HP earnings to fund the trip :D

      Thanks,

      Shanmarie,

Hey, you would tell me if you caught any spinach wouldn’t you? This is serious :D

Do you want to know how many times I’ve pushed a car in high heels? Ha ha ha, really, it’s not funny :D Ha, I asked that before I read your next sentence… I don’t know if that’s funny or sad that your son is prepping :D Okay, it’s funny!

The story of your life? Why don’t you write about it :D

      Thanks sister!

Yeah...now that you mention it, there is a piece of spinach...you wrote "follower" instead of making it plural. :) Ha! My life shall not be a life story. . .at least not now. I am open about many things that are general, but some things just do not belong on HP, or anywhere else for that matter. LOL

Well my dear friend, congratulations on the four months. I can tell you in all honesty that you are a respected and valuable member of this community, and I have no doubt there are many more accolades coming down the road for you.

On a personal note, I am honored to call you a friend. I respect you greatly and I look forward to many more years of friendship.

Good laughs by the way....I don't make much more than you do...oops, I shouldn't have said that; I might discourage you. :)

Great hub Cat. You pulled a fast one on me. I was expecting to see a full gas tank! I agree with you about the money. I've only been here for close to a month. I'd like to make money as well but it's about learning as you go. I'm blessed that my day job can pay the bills. I enjoy having an outlet for my creativity. I'm learning that HubPages is a marathon not a sprint. As long as we make good hubs that are timeless, practical, and evergreen the money will come. Thanks for the laughs.

      Man of Strength,

Thanks! Hey, I laughed at myself yesterday putting $3.oo in my gas tank, which is what I had left after other purchases. I said to myself 'Hey, it's more than HubPage earnings would've given you'. I thought about it the whole way home, aside from the fear of running out of gas :D ... I just had to do a hub about it.

I'm sorry, what was that about 'day job'? Could you translate that into language I can understand? :D ... just kidding.

Hey, if you noticed drbj's comment; there's hope for anyone.

I like the outlet too and the community is really one of a kind; I'm sure you'll see even more of that in the next couple of months.

Thanks for stopping by and sharing MOS!

Nice one Cat and there I was thinking - way to go girl - she's gone and done it, got her first payment and way ahead of me! Sad you have not yet, but I know you will soon. You work so hard and you are always there encouraging everyone so I know it won't be long before the gas tank reads full. I hit 10,000 view this week so I know we are both on our way. I enjoyed the hub, thank you and voted up

That's awesome, congratulations! I know, I could've done a cartwheel when I reached my 1,000 views and watching it crawl to 10,000 is killing me, so I bet that was pretty awesome to see! You are definintely on your way up and gee, I haven't been your way in a while, but I will certainly try my best to get there today, you really have excellent hubs.

You made me laugh! I was just waiting, curious if you made much. Hahaha!

I have heard the entire time I have been here that the first payout can take months, and often once it has been made the first time, subsequent payouts come a little faster. But I am not here for money (it's only a bonus), so I patiently wait as the pennies accumulate, and when I get my first payout it will be a bonus. I just love to write.

I'm glad that you have found HubPages, and that you enjoy it so much. I find the whole community very addictive!

Thank you for writing such a cool hub, and good luck!

p.s. I love the "to-do list" at the top! Hahaha.

I loved this hub.... if nothing else for the SpongeBob picture.

      Just kidding Cat.

I am right there with you on the whole LOVING HP though.... and it sure ain't for the cash........................ YET!

It's for the people.... and yes, so there is no confusion I am talking about people like YOU.

I am fairly convinced that your speaking of me and me alone when you speak of "seriously awesome people".... but I know that your talking about many (but seriously....... just let me have my fun, will ya?)

However, this hub seems like the perfect place to say that without your help? I wouldn't have most of 9 featured hubs that I have within a span of just over 2 months (hopefully 10 soon) and wouldn't be working on a few others as we speak...... especially considering that "10 featured hubs" was in my "6-8 month" category when dealing with personal goals, but you (being the first "seriously awesome" person I met on HP).... you helped make it a reality in half that time....

Thank you (for helping keep me busy.... even if it is just by making me read a great hub), keep up the good work and I hope to help do my part in funding many a trip to the nearest gas station if I can.

Oh, Cat! You are too funny! I kept looking at your gas gauge pictures trying to figure out if my eyes were playing tricks. LOL. Then I realized you made a funny as I continued reading. I should have known better! ;) Well, I'm tailing my 5th month, and I have my highest earnings (not counting mula from the Apprenticeship program). Do you want to guess what it is? A whopping $3.17! I will be able to buy 1/3 of a meal at a decent restaurant without the tip! Woohoo! LOL. I am excited though that my earnings are going up each month. Just think what they could be with 1,500 to 2,500 hubs. I just figured at the rate I'm going with 8 hubs per month, I may reach 1,500 hubs in about 15 years. Yay! Thanks for the laughs, and I'm honored to know you. :-)

I'm right behind you Abby. I've got just over 2 months under my belt and just under 3 bucks (about 2.80 or so if you count my adsense)...... by the end of the month? I'll be able to eat for a whole day..... as long as all 3 meals are found under "the dollar menu".

By the end of the year? combo menu here I come..... I'm thinkin' the number 4 at Mickey D's may be just what the doctor ordered by Mid December ;-)

I’ve heard the same things as you about the payouts. Like you, it would just be a bonus and I’m just enjoying doing what I’m doing now. Anyone who truly loves to write, will do it whether there’s money in it or not and I love writing too.

Yes, addictive, that describes it very well :D Thanks for the props on the ‘to-do list’… if you knew how serious I was about that, you’d probably not laugh :D

No, they reel you in with the promises of cash and then you fall in love before you find out the truth! :D

Okay, that was very cute about the seriously awesome people. Really, the only requirement for being seriously awesome in my book… is liking me, I like when people like me; it feels nice :D

Aw, that’s so nice of you to say about my help and I really appreciate it, honestly, I can almost cry, but you’re the one that did all the hard work! :-) I wish I could be more helpful! You’re too gracious.

Thank you for being so patient with a lady that leaves you hanging way too long, and you know what buddy, this, this that you’re doing right here; that’s a penny toward the next gallon :D

      Abby Campbell,

Thank you… you had me laughing! You know what’s really sad? That was really my before and after picture of my gas purchase :-( ha ha.

You definitely have the Apprenticeship program working for you, only good things will come from it. I begged them to take me when the program was on pause and now that it’s open again, I don’t know if I could conform to the program… I’m scared :D You keep doing what you’re doing and this time next year you’ll be laughing at that $3.17; it’ll probably be $317 for the month of May alone! Ha ha, 1/3 of a meal at a restaurant that I couldn’t afford to drive you to! :D That’s right, at the end of the day… the earnings are going up.

I’m just trying to get to 50 hubs and then I’ll do a cartwheel! Gee, if we aren’t making enough for a nice dinner and a full tank of gas with 1,500 to 2,500 hubs then there’s definintely something wrong. If we are making enough, we just might have to use walkers when we get there, but hey, at least we can say we earned it!

Haha, Cat. I was wondering how much $$$ those that have 1,500 to 2,500 hubs are making. I figured at $3 for one month and 38 hubs, I would only make about $148 to $197 per month... not even the $350 that you suggested for next year. LOL. But, hopefully, I will gain more followers during that time and more of my hubs are read by then. You will get there too. Well, as pathetic as it might sound, I think I’d be happy with even $148 a month… even if that meant pounding out 1,500 hubs :D One thing I noticed though is the exponential increase factor. I imagine in a few months that $3.00 rate will no longer be an accurate figure to work from, you follow? (I barely am :D )

You will cetainly have more followers by then and I need to get over your way more, myself! Now, for whatever reason they took away our ‘share with HubPage follwers’ button, it stinks!

I think that the best thing about the Hub is the enormously talented, and fine human beings that grace its fascinating pages.....and if it ever helps to fill the gas tank, then I think you may need to call the company of a couple of bishops to acknowledge that a modern-day miracle has just occured lol!

      As always,a great Hub!

I love this hub, Cat! I hadn't realized you were almost a 'newbie'! You're so fully a part of the family here, as well as being a super-talented writer! wow. I just figured I'd been slow to discover you! I'm pleased to know how your nickname came to be, too.

I fully share your realization of purpose on here: its being to write and express myself above making money & towing the mark in order to do so. And I love the humorous way you explain your early experience on HP and how it's evolved so far! Good work. I voted it up and across the line of descriptive adjectives.

. . . er. . . you didn't invite any others to point out any spottings of spinach here, but being Olive Oyl's first cousin and knowing Popeye personally through her, may I take the liberty of pointing out a couple of stems, if not outright leaves? After all, you did say you were serious when making the one request. I rarely do this without being asked to, I want you to know. (OO and P both send you their love, btw.) Here goes. . .

"…beautiful followers in which, each one I am grateful…" Shouldn't the preposition be "for. . . which. . " in this context?

"…as evident but the dust build up…" Shouldn't it be "by the dust. . ."?

Thank you, what an honor! Yep, that’s me an almost ‘newbie’ ;-) I’m glad you consider me pat of the family here, as I certainly consider these people part of mine. Yes, dear, I’ve been here four months; you were slow to discover me! Just kidding, I’ve been seeing you around, I was just afraid to come over ;-) Look what I was missing!

I suppose, I thought my nom de plume was self-explanatory, but since recent inquiries, I’ve realized it can mean many things… thought it was a good time to explain myself.

There’s nothing wrong in wanting to make some extra money, but I’m starting to get a feel for the people who are passionate about writing as opposed to the people who are passionate about money. Yes, I admit, an ad brought me here and money was the primary lure and original goal. As soon as I started publishing hubs and meeting the community; the money making part of the experience took a back burner. Could I get better traffic, could I be making more money? Sure, but I want to write with my voice and just enjoy myself here.

Thanks for the lovely compliments, coming from a master like you, I’m truly honored. As far as the eh… spinach, I appreciate pointing that out any time. What friend lets someone walk around with spinach in their teeth all day? For future reference, there is an open invitation! :D See what happens when I get all excited and decide to ‘whip’ up a hub, with no real preparations? Looks like I’ve been bobbing for spinach… or eating at shanmarie’s house… ha ha ha. Thanks for sending love from Popeye and that skinny broad he chases around. Uh, leaves, really? You think that was a little rough? Ha ha! :D

I would also like to note that I have something of a problem with comas and semicolons; every time I breathE, I drop one in. So, should you happen to notice some disturbingly misplaced or misused punction, please consider it spinach and act accordingly :D

Thanks Nellieanna, for the super sweet words and yes, gracing my page and most definitely the pointing out of the spinach! :D

Thank you, Cat. You're so kind. I can't fathom why anyone would be afraid to come over my way, especially someone of your talent and quality! I'm gentle as a lamb.

Yes, your nom de plume is self-explanatory, but only in a general way. The urge to scream might be for any one of a host of reasons, from one end of the spectrum to the other: - personal, political, environmental, international, etc. etc.! But it seems too delicate a matter to ask a person why, even though it stirs wondering about it.

Of course there's nothing wrong with wanting t make some extra money, and if that is part of folks' motivation, more power to them! I hardly noticed it was a possibility when I joined. I had only one motivation: to help the friend who invited me to join, I thought, by following his work. I had no intention of writing much, and definitely not of sharing my poetry! haha! Thirty-eight months later. . . !

Ah, well, I'm relieved. I have one online friend who invites my 'spinach help' but it's something I ordinarily refrain from doing. He's such a master at writing, language and all it involves, it's almost a joke for me to point out his spinach, which is usually just typos, which possibly most is, wherever it appears. What's funny, though, is that he's British, and often it really is just a matter of our countries' difference in usage (or so he claims, hehe) I've other friends who are excellent writers but have 'pet' misspellings & misapplications of commonly misspelled & misapplied words, so that it would be a full-time pastime to point them all out. If anything I'm not - it's grammar police! :-) I probably notice them at all mostly because my eye is trained to, from years of helping a real-life friend edit a church bulletin he writes. That, plus I try to edit my own stuff, - not always successfully enough!

When it comes to punctuation, a lot of it seems to become a writer's style. Unless it is glaringly irregular and complicates or interrupts the meaning or flow of a sentence, it may as well 'stay', once applied. I'm sure you've noticed my pet punctuation: the dash! I often go back and add the correct punctuation TO the dash, which may double the travesty; but I take comfort in the fact that my muse, Emily Dickinson, was also addicted to the dash, thought without the addition of other punctuation to it. sigh.

(OO curtsies and P flexes his biceps for you! About leaves, I thought them preferable to stringy stems! hehe.)

(Shan: - better to own up to it than to appear oblivious to it! hehe)

I just read my last comment and count a bowl-full of spinach in it! Yikes. These pinkie-fingers are sabotaging me!

Yep, Shan, guess you did! Atta'girl! Glad there'll be no need to use the plank as a paddle! Wonder how it would serve as a utensil for eating spinach. . . hm. . . .

    • shanmarie profile image

Shannon 3 years ago from Texas

Sadly, I actually have become oblivious to most of them. Unless they are glaringly obvious like Cat's breath. ;) I really don't know how I forgot to mention that to her when she asked. It really felt like I was forgetting something rather important! haha Part of that, though, is that the mind will naturally correct things like typos unless specifically looking for them and, even then, they can still easily be missed. I've learned to accept my spinach with some grinage when I can't change it after the fact. :D

I know what my most favorite piece of spinach you so proudly displayed was, Miss Nellieanna. BAhahah...I did point it out to you, though. You didn't ask, but it was too funny not to point it out, and I think spinach that obvious is especially rude not to point out. hehe

    • shanmarie profile image

Shannon 3 years ago from Texas

By the way, that's grinage as in with a grin. Looked it up on Google because my browser wasn't marking it as a misspelled word, which I thought surely it must be since I made it up - or so I thought. *shrugs*

      Nellieanna,

Well, now I see how foolish I had been avoiding you! Some people are just find me scary and the gentle lamb-like kind of lady you are, well? I had someone come to a hub of mine for the first time and told me, if I was his child… he’d “wash my mouth out with soap” :-( …and I didn’t even curse! lol But, in all fairness, he later came back and offered some very nice things to say and visited another hub of mine and I was exonerated. Some people just don’t agree with my version of ‘funny’ :D

I have to say, if someone is screaming in my presence, being that it is not exactly a passive behavior, I would certainly inquire ‘what the heck is the problem?’ But… I have had a wise crack about my screaming and the possible reason behind it, so this is my attempt to clear any misconceptions.

I’m certainly glad your motivation has changed since you’ve joined… I couldn’t imagine you not producing the hubs that you do! Thirty-eight months? My goodness; four and I feel like I’ve been here forever.

Please don’t refrain on my pages. I only am mad to feel stupid when I find the errors myself and know that some of the visitors saw, but failed to mention… in which I cannot blame them because I have noticed some on others’ hubs and I feel a bit out of place pointing them out myself, but have thought about emailing them, again, only thought it. :D

Oh and that British thing! Geesh, I’m still trying to get the hang of that. At first, I felt compelled to tell everyone they had too many ‘u’s’ in their words or they ‘inappropriately used a ‘s’ when it should’ve been a ‘z’, but then I just realized… their weird. Now, I feel the need to defend myself when writing in English to a Brit; “… and this is how I mean to spell it!” Ha ha… P.S. I don’t really believe the Brits are weird, I’m just playing.

It’s funny, I seem to be able to pick up on errors of other hubbers’ hubs quite easily, but yet, I’ll have a hub with a few mistakes for weeks before I notice it… Ugh!

Punctuation… a writer’s style? Ahhh, I like that… that shall be my defense :D Emily Dickinson, your muse? Well, then you certainly have some pretty healthy defense… she’s excellent, did a lot of her in college … yeah, yeah, yeah… I’m sure that’s what the boys say too ;-)

Okay, I’ll take the stems, lol. Aw, a curtsy? I’ll take back the inconsiderate way in which I previously referred to her, though I still think Popeye could do better and I apologize as I know it’s relations.

Thank you so much nice gentle lamb lady! I will be planning to publish a novel on your hub this evening… knock on wood :D

Cat, considering the most recent of your hubs, 'never having a date again' makes a lot of sense! It's during those weird social scenarios that all the misrepresentations and misinterpretations originate and gain momentum, as one 'date' follows another.

Surely there is a more rational way to meet prospective opposite-sex (or whatever) possible love interests! Maybe there was a valid role in chaperoned-only-inter-gender socializing! In the loopholes, stuff was promised which was difficult to misrepresent or to pretend - - or to wriggle out of them! ;-) Who knows? The pendulum swings!

I normally don't follow the crowd and I certainly don't kiss anyone's bum so they can give me a comment back - they are a lot of pretentious silly arrogant and conceded people at the Hub (over the 3 years I've seen them come and go) but then again there are a lot of wonderful kind generous and talented people too and when the Hub is in full force - it's a lovely beautiful thing to see with people from all over the world sharing and caring for each other -

that said Cat I am not kissing your bum for a comment BUT , lol lol lol,

I know what you think and I also know that you can be surrounded by people and still feel alone; but I will tell you, you are nothing of a loner or outsider to me… a rebel, well yes, but that only makes me love ya more :D

I guess you could say that I’m a little bit of the girl version of you… I sometimes feel like a loner and definitely an outsider… the rebel, sometimes my thoughts and sometimes the thoughts of others.

Your words are hitting tonight in a very deep place Colin. I have to say, I’m am very much pleased with the people here and I don’t fake it for anyone, yet, people are ready to cast me aside because a joke I made, one day, they didn’t find funny…. or, commenting on a hub and have the hub author respond to every comment on the page but mine? I don’t get it. I lost a follower today and I know who it was, yet I have no idea why. Am I supposed to beat myself up wondering what I did wrong?

…and I know you’re not kissing my bum for a comment because you know you’ll get one anyway! :D Ha ha ha

Colin, you have to be one of, if not, the most selfless person I know. Even when things have got you down, you’ll give up what you have left to lift someone else up and you do if for me a lot. For you, I am grateful and you are the model of what other hubbers should be like.

Cat: four months in for me too, and I've made a whopping 10$ this month. At this rate I'll need to get to 250 hubs before I get $$$$PAID$$$$$

But I'm sticking with it though. HP is good for working on your writing chops, getting feedback while also making at least a trickle of money. If you get a bunch of good writing together, it could also use it to get other online writing gigs that actually pay a reasonable amount of cha-ching.

      shanmarie,

I am in a heck of a mood… I love people and I’m always standing, with my arms covering my face in the defensive position, waiting for someone to attack me, because that is the life I’ve had. I’m certainly not implying Nellieanna is attacking me… I don’t believe that at all. You’re version is much nicer than how I took it, but as I said… I’m always ready for the criticism, but I’m not terribly gracious at receiving it. Especially, when no harm is intended. Nellieanna is extremely intelligent and her words are probably above my comprehension skills. I don’t know, but I know I lost at least one follower today… and the only thing I can figure is it has something to do with one ‘stupid’ poem. Sometimes we use words to convey a mood or feeling, but we don’t mean them in the literal sense. Since I last logged off, my day has not gotten any better, so I’m looking at everything through gloomy skies.

As for the follower, you can't please everybody. I've lost one or two myself. Sometimes the things other hubbers write maybe just aren't of interest. It does not mean one does not like that hubber or believe that that hubber cannot write.

Well that stinks for you, but I'm almost relieved... I was thinking you didn't want to talk to me. I went over there, but you were not :D ... I'm trying to get to your email... I swear it... I'm losing steam, it's been a rough day, but I'm smiling, I am :-) I wonder if the internet connection thing doesn't have something to do with the storms so many of us have had... my connection has been rotten all week too, which has been particularly stressful when trying to catch up.

You're right shan... I was just thinking about this. I love this place and so many people here, to let it be shadowed by the ocassional negative experience, that includes my own stress about 'getting to people's hubs before the get offended'. I'm just going to enjoy myself otherwise it's counterproductive, isn't it?

Don't worry about that email. It's not really important. I was just giving you a hard time about something.

I am there now, provided it stays online. :/

      Yes! Enjoy yourself. :)

      Nellieanna,

If you ever return to this page, which I wouldn't blame you if you didn't, seeing as I've made an ass of myself... I just wanted to say, I'm sorry and I have problems :D

I had a particularly rough day, away from the computer... with a little more ugliness than I prefer. Then I come back here and see someone unfollowed me... okay, fair enough... but I realized who it was and 'he/she' was on that hub today, commenting, nicely... so I am confused and figured some are/were finding that hub offensive. I have some insecurities, which are embarrassing to own up to, but they lead me to assume I am disappointing others and that's what I thought I had done with you. I just reread your comment and it's reading much different to me now, that I've calmed down. Please forgive my ignorance... I love you too much to lose you :-(

      ketage,

Thanks... It's funny; that's how much gas I actually did purchase because I had little cash in my pocket. As I drove away from the gas station, laughing at how ridiculously little gas I just bought, I thought... 'it's like HubPage earnings!' ... I just had to do it. Thanks again!

I love reading your pieces and you are a truly talented writer. You can't write like you and never make money, your money will come and in the meantime, you get to bring joy into people's lives and bask in the beautiful compliments they send your way! I love poetry too and I'm finding it almost hard to stay away from reading it and writing it!

Thanks girly, you are certainly a poet and you ought to know it! :D

Cat, you'll be happy to note I took your advice and got my Google AdSense figured out. I’d been carrying around a postcard with a pin number in it for the last three months. Well, maybe they hadn’t dropped me. I decided maybe I ought to get it straight, so I did. I followed the instructions. I figgered I’d be lucky to have $1.98 but lo and behold, I have earned a little over $48. Well, butter my biscuits! I can’t believe it for a year and three months, and I haven’t even been trying. Maybe that’s the secret. Oh well, I can’t cash it out yet, so I shouldn’t brag.

Hey, where’s this here spinach y’all keep talking about? I like mine parboiled first.

      MizBejabbers,

Well butter my biscuits! Ha ha ha Yes, you should brag... $2.00 away! I'll have to come over and read a couple more hubs and that just might get ya some gravy for those biscuits! :D

Well, there's trying to write for money and then there's writing for yourself... I figure the money comes either way; one might just be faster than the other.

Oooh, the spinach you ask? Well, have you ever noticed a mispelled word on another hubber's hub (probably mine :-) and not know if you should point it out? I made a comment one day that if I hate finding an error in one of my hubs after it's been read by numerous people; it's like walking around with spinach in your teeth all day and nobody telling you, then you get home and say 'how many people did I talk to with spinach in my teeth?' Moral - please tell me if ever you see spinach in my teeth so I can remove it :D Parboiled huh? I like me some spinach anyway I can get it... 'cept in my teeth or me hub :D

Thanks for stopping by and sharing your story! Congratulations on the soon-to-be cash out!

lol. You've certainly been busy in the past four months. Congratulations on the milestone. By the time you reach six months, I'm hoping you'll no longer be so sensitive. You can't raise your head up from a rabbit hole as often as you do expecting that every time someone is trying to take a shot. Way too stressful. :)

Loved the photos. I live so far away from the nearest fuel station that if I've forgotten to bring my visa card and I'm low on fuel, I'm digging out coins from under my seat to get home. I'm forever popping into the bank when it is open saying, "Oops, sorry. I've done it again. Can't use the ATM. Can you give me some cash out of my account please?"

People keep telling me you can't get cash from a bank without producing appropriate ID. I'm at the point where the embarrassed look on my face is all the ID I need. :)

Oh, that sensitivity thing, it's a curse really and I fear it will never go away. That's true... the rabbit hole and I like it! Ha ha

Oh my goodness how I hope you're joking about the gas station and bank... lol! I'll tell ya, there's a picture of my face hanging at the local gas station that reads: Must Start Requiring A Fuel Minimum... 67cents isn't worth turning the pumps on for!

Oh... you've got me laughing now!

      I will see you, later!

      Thanks a lot!

I've been here on HubPages for more than a year - very nearly two years - and am so happy to say that I am now raking in the big bucks!! This month - not counting money made from the apprenticeship program - I will bring in a total of $2.54!!! Still not enough to buy an entire gallon of gas, but I'm getting there!!!

The real payoff here is the community - you find wonderful friends that are some of the best people around and will help you when you need it and support all you do. That is better than filling my gas tank!

You're right though and I have come to very much love the community. I have already been very fortunate to meet some excellent people here, many whom I call friend.

Thank you so much for gracing my silly and humble page!

Hi Cat, just thought I would drop by and read one of your Hubs, and glad I did. This was very amusing, and as I only have 23 myself, I'm sure you will understand I am not one of the top Hub Earners. Actually, I'm also quite new, but, just like you, I really enjoy the friends I have met here. I like your energy and friendliness, but your name has always made me wonder if there is a lot of sadder stuff underneath that? Great to see you enjoying and becoming a big earner.

      Vickiw,

Wow, thank you so much for coming by and such nice compliments. I really had no idea what my purpose for joining HP was, initially. I thought, with all the ugliness in the world, surely there was something to 'scream' about and I was hoping people would listen. Now, I'm trying to scream less and laugh more! I couldn't be any more pleasantly surprised how many wonderful people there are here and honestly, they do more for me than the dollars would!

I'm so happy to see a place where so many, different kinds of people can express themselves and share and relate. I'm very happy to have met you as well! I will certainly meander over your way later as I've only read one of your hubs myself... and that's far too few!

      Thanks again!

First and foremost I want to say, "Welcome to HubPages." We have a great community and it is a pleasure to meet someone new. Although I've made money writing and have had several articles published in a national magazine, I never started writing for the money. I personally believe that writers ply their trade for different reasons. Some do indeed create stories and articles simply for monetary reasons. Then there are those writers who create beautiful articles, simply because they have a love of writing. To me, those are the authors of the soul that say what they mean and mean what they say.

You will make money because your hubs are interesting. It may take a year or so but if just one hub goes viral you will rake it in. Best of luck Sean

Fun article! Thanks for sharing your experience! I've been here for almost four months. I've learned that patience is definitely key. I'm earning almost $1 a day and was approved for adsense last month.

I learned early on that evergreen topics, made for pinterest pictures, and popularity were three major selling points for articles. I just recently got my 10,000 views award and am amazed at the traffic my hubs have been getting.

I've experimented writing for Wizzley and Seekyt and they do not compare to the traffic and Google rankings of Hubpages. Hope you have a wonderful day!

Thank you so much for the compliments, that really means a lot! Who doesn’t appreciate money… but, I very much appreciate the people I’ve met here and they don’t come and go the same way money does! Wow, I’m so honored by the superstars that have graced my humble page today!

Thank you for the welcome, I sincerely appreciate it! You seem to have a natural writing ability, to write and be published and to write for the sake of writing and still create wonderful pieces! I will certainly have to head your way and investigate further! I am a writer at heart, that is how I express myself, whether it’s good bad or indifferent… it’s something I enjoy and something I must do! I stumbled upon HubPages and was intrigued by the thought of ‘make money for writing’… but my motivation, inspiration and goals shifted dramatically. I can’t write for Google, I just write what’s on my mind and share it with others. So far, the people here and been very supportive and accepting… that’s better than any paycheck.

Thank you so much for the visit and the comments!

I very much appreciate your visit and your secrets to success! I find that one of my articles that gets the least internal HubPage traffic, gets the most external traffic. I guess the key is finding how to write things that appeal to both! You seem to be on the right track!
