We human understand what a picture is without seeing any description. we confirm it when we say that a picture worth a thousand words. It is same thing with videos, you don't understand a text or don't have time to read, you just watch a video and understand better with some demonstrations. It is not the case for search engine which are automated software. To understand a picture, searches engines need the only thing it trust: text.

For search engines, all things you have on your website that is not text need an alternative. By example, an in line image need an alt tag, figure need fig caption and more... For videos, you need description. Even if the technology is advanced enough to recognize faces on pictures, it is not already implemented into searches engine to analyze image.

Getting traffic from pictures

As you may know, extended HTML did not accept missing alt tag on images. The rules do not change with HTML 5, an alt tag is the best way to bring traffic to your website using pictures.

As you may notice the picture above, it is a screen capture from a search page with the terms "hub-pages", because i named my pictures hub pages it appear on the search result for image as recent pictures. There are a menu on the right side of the picture to visit site with image, show image info. If your picture are attractive enough, it is the good way to get free traffic on searches engine via picture.

On Google as example, there are a specific section for picture searches, but pictures may appear as result for web search also.

How to improve your image for search engines?

Searches engine index your picture in different ways:

  • As a picture on a website: It will show it when people make a image search for your domain name.
  • As a picture which has a sense: Based on alt tags, Google understand that your image has a sense and the text around the picture may explain things well.

Updating your alt to fit the articles context is a great way to get traffic to your site. The more your picture seem attractive, funny or intriguing, the more traffic you'll get.

Google will show the thumbnail of your video with text on your page (or video description on video sites), the more relevant your text are, the more attractive your thumbnail are, the more traffic you'll get!

To get traffic on your website, the videos must be hosted on your website, as it is required to upload videos on hub pages to create video hub, there are no alternative than hosting it on hub pages.

Your video will rank higher as soon as you get traffic which will comes automatically when you get a great thumbnail. Traffic to get traffic from videos, you can use your own video. By example, i create video with window video maker and video capture such as cam studio. If you use HTML 5 tag, you will have the opportunity to set your own thumbnail, otherwise, make the first image on your video informative.
