Hubpages-A Stepping Stone

What to write

Aspiration for Writing

From my childhood I had the aspiration to express my experience in writing for the view of others. While dabbling with writing occasionally I had realized that I could at least weave simple sentences to bring out meaning full ideas but never before I wrote for any newspaper or web writing site as I was not confident enough to begin such endeavour.

While I have not tried my hand at writing before I would watch with amazement how few of my colleagues produced excellent short pieces of stories out of real life incidents laced with some imagination. Many of my friends then just showered praises on them but while silently wishing them more laurels in their literary efforts I tried to get to the mystery behind their success. I was sure; however, it was their ability to weave together words meaningfully to create something engaging that captured the viewers. Although the thought of recording anything in writing that has happened has always pricked me since childhood, I have never written much in my diaries either.

My elder brother was a very good writer in Bengali and English using both the languages to express any views with equal felicity and dexterity. While he started to write about sports for a Bengali weekly I could only appreciate his acumen without trying to do such activities myself. But that was his absolutely different prodigious activity that drove him to such success in literary matters. I do not remember any other close relations indulging in such practice although my father, an eminent educationist and principal of a college, was equally adept in his mother tongue and English.

Impetus Is Essential

One thing I perhaps missed in my literary zeal was the absence of real encouragement from my close ones. One reason for this might be that literary talent had not run in my family except for my brother or that I pursued science and did not study English after school and I considered the practice as drudgery. My learning of the foreign language leaned heavily on my reading a favorite newspaper only. Now that I can interlace a few sentences in simple English is due to my mother who initiated us into reading the daily English newspaper very early despite our stiff resistance in the beginning as we had to stumble into the habit. This is not to mean that we had neglected our mother tongue anyway. On the contrary I laid stress on both but English somehow got an edge as I had to learn my science subjects in the language and subsequently using it abundantly for official correspondence and communications.

With that background I was looking for an e site which would allow me to express my feelings thus giving me the much needed scope to ascertain whether I could become a writer. I prepared for the show of my ability and soon registered my name at Hubpages. As natural I was invited to start a hub. I was in a fix for I had no such experience before though the initiative for such a plunge had come from my inner self. While trying to bring together my short pieces of incomplete writings done on my portable typewriter I recounted how a famous Bengali novelist encountered such an embarrassing situation initially at the time of his foray into his literary world when sensing his power to write beautifully a school mate had announced without his knowledge launching of a new story by him on the eve of Durga Puja, a great festival all the Bengalis look forward to eagerly. But that was another incredible story of real success and reaching the dizzy heights subsequently in the field but alas poor me! However, I mustered sufficient courage to produce a story on the life of my uncle- a real life story. I sent for publication on Hubpages. Imagine my surprise to find my write-up and name in print and gradually I began to receive critique from different parts of the globe giving stamp on my ability to write and above all assuring the support from the Hubpages family. Slowly I dug deeper and sent another story which was also accepted by the family. Now I have ventured to publish yet another short piece with a punch line waiting to assess its acceptability by the readers. If I can prove my mettle in due course I am inclined to reach out to the people of the world at large showing the glimpses of gems from my very own Bengali literature I love the most. I owe it to Hubpages for giving me the access to the realm of scribes. I understand that language is no barrier and all the readers of Hubpages are bound by ties of kindred seeking to know one another deeply by the language of the mighty God.

Writers' Suitability

On Hubpages, as I have found out much to my pleasure, we are encouraged to write on any subject that suits us. I am inclined to write short pieces on creative writing based mainly on real life incidents spiced with some humour and fanciful imagination. Since I have lot of experience to relate, I am sure, I shall have the opportunity to publish them gradually. I have been on Hubpages for nearly two months and so far my experience is concerned my fears have been soothed away encouraging me to carry on my activities as I am still learning a lot from the community. Initially although I lacked ideas, with impetus from one and all new ideas are coming in droves and I expect to convert them into good stories in near future.

Now that my lifelong ambition has been somewhat achieved, my next goal is to write at least 50 hubs next year. I am already a late opener but I must try to keep track of the successful writers for I need to formulate plan and execute them without delay. I am very interested to interact with other hubbers to enrich my knowledge and to know others closely.

Advice to Fellow Hubbers

My advice to those keen on writing and looking for an ideal site to help them realize the long cherished goal is not to delay but to join Hubpages immediately as any doubts, lack of confidence and other negative aspects will be taken care of by the Hubpages family in due course paving their way for a pleasant and enjoyable time with them.

Hawaiianodysseus- Thank you very much for your wonderful comments. As for your query let me add Calcutta is now rechristened Kolkata. So now Bombay has given way to Mumbai and during such change of nomenclature Madras goes for Chennai. So good bye Calcutta and as they say 'DO AS THE ROMANS DO'

You, sir, have a wonderful writer's voice and depth of character. As with walking, the secret to good writing is to take that first step. We can talk about it all we want; we can say from the time that we're old enough to hold a pencil that we want to write...but nothing will come of it until we dare to make all the mistakes in the world to tell our respective stories. Looks like you're off to a wonderful start, Arun Kanti.

Thank you very much for sharing your special perspective. Know this, my friend--in your own special and humble way, you are inspiring so many other aspiring as well as established HubPages writers (as well as those presently thinking about joining HubPges) by way of your daring to risk writing these beautiful words of yours.

      Aloha from southeast Washington state!

      Joe

PS A question: Is Kolkata another spelling for Calcutta? Thank you.

It is refreshing to find someone occupying a very high position as a commenter taking some time off to go through my writeup and making such nice observations. It is also a cheer up call from my compatriot who has turned out to be an excellent writer in his specialised realms.Thank you and wish you all the best.
