How to Generate Great Keywords With Google Adwords Keyword Tool

 A Tool Designed for People Who Buy AdWords

"Keywords are what people search for on Google" says the informative welcome page to Google AdWords.

The guys at Google are masters at keeping it simple:

  1. You create ads and choose keywords, which are words and phrases related to your business.
  2. Your ads appear on Google. This means that when people put in the keywords your ads may appear on the search results.
  3. Internet users click your ad in order to make a purchase or get information on you.

This service is something you pay for, hence the term cost per click (CPC). The actual cost to you depends on another factor which is self-explanatory, called the click through rate (CTR). Webmasters and publishers buy Google Adwords in order to attract traffic and hopefully customers. There are thousands of SEO and traffic gurus who are too willing to teach you, for a fee, how to design your landing page to guarantee sales or hook the visitor to your site.

Using the Keyword Tool for Free

But for now let's continue talking about how Google AdWords Keyword Tool can be used for free.

That's where Google AdSense comes in. We are the publishers, the content providers on the receiving end of that advertising dollar courtesy of Google AdSense, less Google's charge, of course. Google needs content in order to drive the market. So here on Hub Pages, Google pays us to advertise their clients on our sites.

Question: Wouldn't it be great for us publishers who subscribe to Google AdSense to have a free tool which tells us the keywords that advertisers are buying?

Do you understand the question? You don't? Let me explain some more.

Our hubs need traffic in order to make money. Traffic comes in through the tags, same thing as keywords. Not all tags/keywords are equal; some make more money than others. Caution: Google will penalise you if you attach an irrelevant tag simply because it will draw money traffic.

Again, I ask the question: Wouldn't it be great for us publishers to have a free tool which tells us the keywords that advertisers are buying?

Yes! But in a market economy you would have to pay for something like that, you thought.


Thanks to yoshi97 whose great hub walked me through the stages of using the Google AdWords Keyword Tool, I just want to write a few word to say something about the discovery. Would you believe it, a lot of good stuff is available on the Internet for free. Imagine, the Google AdWords Keyword Tool was there all along and I refused to venture into that area because I thought that once you started talking AdWords you had to pay for it.

Man! I was so wrong. Thank you yoshi97.

At the time of writing I don't even have a Pay pal account, so if I can't get it for free I leave it alone. And I left the Google AdWords tool alone for nearly two years because I thought you had to pay for it to suggest the good keywords.

Google has set up the tool so that you can either research your keyword or crawl your URL to suggest key words.

Why on earth would they do that for free?

Customer service.

I guess if you are buying keywords to boost you traffic, then you do the initial data entry and choose which words to buy, and they will automatically add it to your campaign. As soon as i have a proper payment system such as Pay Pal I expect to launch AdWords campaigns for my blogs and hubs.

You may not be buying keywords but you can use the tool for free.

You simply write down the list of suggested key words, then manually go back to your site and enter them in the tags. Yoshi97 reports significant increase in traffic.

Guess what? It works for me too. Now I know what advertisers are doing I can use better keywords. Yes! Already I am seeing more traffic.

      Thanks for all the useful information. I have found that affiliate marketing is a great way to make an income online. But you always need traffic for that.

      Thanks for stopping by SweetiePie.  Yes the analysis part is free, of course.  Sorry if my article did not make that clear.  It's the advertisers who pay.

      Hence step 2 :

      "Your ads appear on Google. This means that when people put in the keywords your ads may appear on the search results."

      The tool is free for analysis, but the idea is that you use it to plan your Google advertising campaign.
