"GOD BLESS AMERICA LAND THAT I LOVE STAND BESIDE HER AND GUIDE HER....like me???

Well over the years I have learned to be organized,,,It really is simple...I take a piece of paper and date it ....

Jan 2009... (then i write down the bills as they come in)

House pymt.....15th.....1500.00

cable t.v. ........ 16 th........65.00

car pyt. .........26th........386.00

and so on. list each bill when it is due and what the payment is...when I pay the bill I scratch it off the list and put what date paid and the check #

I list all auto pays in a seperate list (on the same sheet though) and cross them off on the date they are paid...I even put the date I mailed...

Also keep the receipts from the bills in the stack that I put a rubberband around...if ever a questions comes up you just go the month and there is all the information...

I keep this all in a basket with pens and pencils, return address labels and stamps, a calculator and even a red pencil so if I am ever in the red I mark my balance in the red...In my checkbook record I use pencil so If I make a mistake it can be erased...

I balance my statements each month and always double check my adding and substraction...you may be surprised how you can transpose numbers...and / or forget to write the check down...I personally DO NOT use debit cards...too easy to forget to enter in the checkbook (unless you are really deligant).

Sometimes in my hurry to get rid of my money LOL...and pay my bills I do forget to wite one down...it can kick you in the butt later...I write the checks first in the record book...then tear each one out and place it in the reciept part of the bill...go to the next and so on...then I go back and detail each check to the bill...placing the receipt in the back of the pile....

OK OK enuf I think you get the idea....So at the first of the year the basket is empty...but I keep the whole year, in order in the basket. I also keep all store receipts in a specific drawer ( or folder ) to have in case???? Also after balancing my statements I mark the "OK" on the front and store them in the basket ( that way if you ever need to re-check they are there)...

Hummm...totally confused now???? I'm not. At the end of the year I go through and organize my bills and receipts...highlighting what is deductable and what is donations and also go through my receipts to add up my medical costs, my interest earned, etc....then I seperate each into catagories and when I go to have my Taxes done I have everything done and right at my fingertips...

I used to keep files ( I still do) but I found for everyday bills and expenses this was easy and right at hand...I am not a wealthy person so mine is fairly simple, for the simple person that I am...I do spend a few hours at the time of Taxes to add it all up but the rest of the year I don't worry...just keep myself organized in my simplistic way...

I go to a tax place (H&R Block) (oops can I say that)? and have for the last 40 years so they know me and take real good care of me...Sometimes I pay...sometimes I get money back...as life goes on things change...so we have to learn to adapt to the changes...

So now that you are totally confused and wonder how the hell this G-ma can keep herself organized...I say to you I"M NOT...Ha ha G-Ma :o) Hugs & Peace No really I am...just had 2 glasses of wine and thought you would like to hear "I'M NOT"....hic hic upppp

Well it works for me and I do know we all have our own wonderful system and Thank GOD for that hey? I Love you all and i pray each night for each of you...HONEST I DO..Me again

Hi G-Ma, being organized is the key to keeping track of one's expenses. :-) You would be surprised how some people find this so hard to do. Thanks for sharing this one! :-)

Nice tips G-Ma. Like you I enjoy writing my expenses down and keeping track of each payment. I am so obsessed with monitoring my saving and checking I log in at least once a day to check the balances.

Madison...thanks hun and how is the wine? Mine's tasty hee hee LOL...anyway I will do as you suggest and check around a bit...but as you also say things change so quickly I wouldn't even think to do my own with owning a house and all...I do long form for the most deductions I can get.

Being alone now I just want it simple and easy, cause I have enough other stuff to do with mom's taxes and all her paperwork and dealing with the Insuance companies etc....

Thanks angel for your caring...G-Ma :o) Hugs & Peace

What's working there, G, the system or the wine? Personally the wine works best for me.

In my day job I work in the financial field. You will not see an article from me on this subject because I like to write about anything BUT this stuff when I have time to write!!!

I have to go pour another glass of wine, but before I do, I think your system sounds like it works for you. Whatever works for you is a good thing.

By the way, if you have to PAY taxes, I'd consider another tax accountant! I don't want to burst your bubble, but HR Block are "form filler-outers." (By the way I am most certainly NOT an accountant!! God forbid....) I probably shouldn't say that because I don't know your entire financial situation, but, ask your friends who they use to prepare their taxes. Then, ask them how much of a refund they get. You may not be in the same boat as they are, but consider your choices.

Oh, by the way, the friends who tell you they prepare their own taxes; unless they are dead broke, pay no attention to their response! The laws and rules and regs change faster than we change our clothes! You need a pro to do them for you.

That is a nice way to be organized. I guess our nearest HR block last year I went quoted too high and I checked out online (I was getting the same refund but for far less cost/fee). Good job and my hugs to you. (((HUGS)))

Organized and simplistic you are, G-Ma. This is a great hub to help so many get a system in order for managing their money. I love your basket system, a super idea. I use the shoebox system. Well, the real truth is my husband pays the bills and keeps the shoebox neat and does our taxes and those of others too. Did you ever hear of a football widow? Well G-Ma I am a tax widow, lol! Great Hub! AND thank you so much for the daily prayers, you really are the very best! Be Blessed Always, ~Dottie~

G-Ma: The energy I got from your hub is you are relaxed when it comes to managing your finances. Your system seems to work well. Cool! Each month, I write down all the bills that are going to be due, and I cross off each one that I paid, to make sure I don't overlook a bill.
