Hubpages - My First 6 Months - Making Money Online

Updated on January 7, 2011

It has been about 6 months since I have taken my first step into writing online. My profile may say I joined before hand, however, I did not do anything on here(much). It was not until June 2010, when I really got serious on here. I did a considerable amount of writing through the summer. When I started college, I still wrote on here a lot. For a while, I was writing 2 hubs a day. I have made some mistakes, which I am sure many will when they first start out. I focused on multiple niches. Having variety was what I thought would help bring in traffic to my hubs and so on. The first few months were not that great in income. In fact, they were quite horrible. However, I knew that the majority of people who start on here, will not make much in the first few months. The key to making money on here is consistency. Well, at least, that is one of the keys anyway.

My first few months were nothing to get excited about. I was publishing quite a bit, but it was the beginning for me. I actually had a day where I published over 5 hubs. That was a mistake. When you write on hubpages, you need to write on information that people are searching for. If you just pick some random unknown topic, you will not recieve much traffic or none at all. I made some "dead in the water" hubs, which I regret. I may delete them, but for now, I am just going to leave them be.

Monthly Income

I knew from the very beginning, that I would not make much money the first few months. Did I have any expectations on income? No, I did not have a clue on how much I could potentially earn. All I knew was that I needed to build a foundation. Building a foundation is the key to starting an online business or whatever you wish to call it. Even if you were an expert at SEO, your earnings would not be anything amazing in the beginning. Creating passive income is difficult, because you do not earn actively, you earn when you eat, sleep, etc.

June 2010

This month was my first step into serious writing. I had published a few hubs in 2009, but most were deleted for policy reasons. During this month, I had no perceived notion of what my income would be at the end of the month. I published a handful of hubs, and made about $1.10. This was not much at all of course, however, this was the first month. Nothing previously was established.

July 2010

The next month, was basically a carbon copy of the previous month. I continued writing a lot. I focused on multiple niches, and a few miscellaneous niches. The misc. niches did not do well at all. A word of advice, do not write on very random topics that nobody is searching for. (if you expect to make money). During this time, I tried to learn as much about backlinking as possible. I would read other hubbers hubs, and ask for advice in the forums. Everyone had a different perspective, many said backlinks were important, while others did not abide by it. At the end of the month, I made about $3.97 cents to my dismay.

Following Months

August 2010

For the majority of the month, I wrote quite a bit, and did research on making money using hubpages. At this point, I believe I was using religiously. Basically, this site allows you to send backlinks much faster. You no longer need to type in the URL of each site. Most of these sites, I found, were not all that great. However, I did find a few which I sent my backlinks to. Most of the hubs I published, had a few backlinks.

At this time, I also would ping my hubs using ping sites such as, ping o matic, and Bing My Blog, and a few others as well.

This month brought in about $7.43. An increase, but not by much.

September 2010

To my dismay, I was not able to publish many hubs this month, if any. I was suffering from insomnia, and was going through college classes. This was not the best month for me in terms of stress-free. I made a little bit more compared to the previous month,  $10.81.

October 2010

For some reason, at the end of this month, I seen potential coming for November. I made about double of what I did in the previous month, $19.43. I was in the forums a lot during this time, sending backlinks, reading, and writing. I had a record day on Halloween,  contributed to nearly doubling last month. I just knew, the following month would be good for some reason.

November - Turning Point

This month was great for me. I focused on a specific niche this month, and my traffic sky rocketed. During most of the month, I received about 300-600 views from adsense a day. However, some of my hubs sky rocketed in traffic, and I hit over 1000 views on November 22nd! After this time, I was hitting at least 1000 hits!

I noticed my CTR (click through ratio) was going bad though.... My CTR went below average, and I was concerned. Many told me, not to worry about this, and just to continue writing. Some niches simply bring in a bad CTR, and its random too.

This was the month I was hoping to reach payment. I was pretty sure I could, and eventually did. I made a few dollars over the minimum $100.00 Google Adsense payout. Over 50% of my income was made during this month. I made $54.56 through the course of November. My check will be a little over $100.

(It should be noted that I made cents during the months of October 2009-May 2010. This was what actually sparked me to come back to hubpages, cause I only wrote a few hubs, but I saw the true potential of this site) I was basically hiatus during January 2010 - May 2010

Final Acknowledgments

I see the true potential of this site, and in Google Adsense in general. Most people give up when they start. The thing is, you need to understand what type of income your attempting to establish.

This is money that is very difficult to establish, however, wouldn't it be nice to make a few hundred dollars per month with little effort on your part? Or perhaps full-time income 1000+ a month. This is money that you make while your doing "whatever".

What many fail to understand is that it takes a lot of hard work to make money because its that type of income. However, working hard in the beginning can help pay off later.

At this point, it looks like December will be a pretty decent month. I am hoping I can reach payout again, but even if I do not, I should be quite close. There are some plans I have in 2011 which I can not capitalize on yet, but I will continue to find out as much as I can about keyword research. I am no expert on keyword research, but I noticed some things have worked for me, while others have not. Then of course, there's the medium in both.

I believe sending backlinks are important if the niche is higher competition, but if it is not, I do not think its quite as important. Content is king ultimately. Keywords are also VERY important. (relevant keywords)

Farewell, perhaps I will have another update in the future.

I was able to make minimum payout for google adsense in December!

Some Hubbers that have motivated me

These are some hubbers that have motivated me through their hubs, forum comments, or other ways.

There are also quite a few others that have also motivated me. More may be added later!

HI David, I was browsing over the hubs to find ways to make money here in hubpages wheh I saw this article of yours. It's amazing! I never thought that I really need to exert such effort to earn. Today, I'm planning to successfully create an adsense ID because I always fail to do so. I don't know why google wouldn't approve my sign ups. It's embarrassing on my part until I stopped on trying to create an account on them.

Thanks a lot for this hub. It's helpful so I'm voting up!

David-congratulations on your efforts- our paths are very similar it took me 6 months to reach payout with adsense with little or nothing in the first 4 months. With niches I find that if you write say 15 hubs around the same niche that is the optimum amount. But I do have more than one niche which I agree with Wrylit's thoughts on.

O yes, thank you WryLilt, yeah that's the problem nagendragpu.

I would still separate your big hub into smaller ones though, just my input though...

Nagendragpu, you are from India. Unfortunately Adsense has a mandatory six month waiting period for people from your area, due to the amount of spammers. However you can still use Amazon in the meantime.

      @ nagendragpu

They may have disapproved you because you only have 2 hubs.

The one hub you wrote looked like it could of have been multiple hubs. You just made it one giant hub.

Its good for a hub to be long, but its probably better to make multiple hubs if your going to have one that long.

Yeah, the first few months is basically building a foundation. Eventually, hubbers can make minimum payout monthly if they are consistent enough.

David congrats for your payout and success. I am here for 3 months. So very eagerly read your month by month story. After reading I understood that first 6 months are very crucial for every new hubbers.

Thanks for the advice and details. I started cautiously writing two months ago and haven't been too impressed by the results. I try to focus on writing good hubs, then get discouraged by low readership. I've gotten some advice and things seem to be picking up. Patience is crucial.

    • David 470 profile imageAUTHOR

      David 470

Yeah, I will edit this, what I meant is that there should be a primary niche, then sub niches.

In other words, focus on one main, but use other niches too.

    • WryLilt profile image

      Susannah Birch

Thanks for the mention. The only thing I would add is there is nothing wrong with writing in a huge variety of niches - I do. My biggest niche would be babies, with no more than 30 hubs in it. I write in all different areas and as long as the titles are specifically aimed at what people type into search engines, it's fairly easy to get a little bit of traffic at least.

Marisa Wright reported having a hub that was 'dead' for fifteen months then took off and suddenly started bringing in good money. So it can happen!

Your english is a bit strange to me, but I will try to help.

Did you ever sign up with google adsense? When you first sign up you need to wait to see if you get approved.

When you use google adsense on here, you automatically are signed up on your whole profile.

For example, you have 12 hubs, if google accepts you, you have the ability to make money from them, and any future ones.

They will give you an Id which you need to use.

Once you get your id, you go to my account - affiliate settings, and put the code into Google Adsense field.

Be sure to read Google Adsense's policies first, and be aware of hubpages policies.

googles rules how does this work? do we get a new account am rally lost , i need to undersand the concept as once taken, mybe no going back??? just not winnin. is this realistic? r u rally making money? sir

Are you currently not signed up with Google Adsense?

If your not signed up, then you will not have the ability to make money until you get an id.

If you have not yet signed up, you can here

You will have to wait until they verify you. They will give you an Id which you need to copy to your affiliate settings in "my account"
