Hubs - What is a Hub?

Updated on June 3, 2011

Media Hub

This evening I was trying to think of a popular keyword or topic to write about and simplest thing I thought of was 'What is the reason for the name Hub-pages? why 'hubs'?' and it is a question I have asked myself in the past and not just for this article.

I suppose we can all speculate the reason for this choice of name but I decided to discuss some of the logical associations that could be made between the word hub and what we do here at our little writing community!

I have used photographs to help illustrate the metaphorical similarity of particular hub objects and how they could represent the average hubber, for example, the hub cap photograph above could exhibit how my hubs are a reflection of my life and 'world', since it is domed in perspective.

Top Hub

Obviously the 'Hub cap' was not what the graphic designers were thinking when the decided to create the website but I thought it would be a fun to draw interpretations from what other people might mistake the site to be about if they landed here by accident when looking for car parts.

I guess that comes from being a graphic design graduate myself and because I studied semiotics in one of my modules, but we could describe our hubs as a journey through current world debates and entertainment.

7 Port Hub

The most logical choice for describing our writers community would be a combination of technology and reading, this being the congregation of our computers and network hubs for the sake of creating informative pages.

USB Powered Hub

I actually own a 10 port USB hub and it is amazing how many connections I have to my laptop, these include a webcam, microphone, headphones, wireless mouse and sometimes a data cable. I don't watch TV much but I also have a desktop computer which is powered on at the moment that I watch programs on Youtube with, this has a printer and stereo system hooked up to it and my whole layout is plugged into one outlet via 3 extension cords!

The Hub

If you type the word 'Hub' into Flickr you will retrieve a lot of image results displaying bicycle wheels, I was unaware that the central connection of a bike wheel was also called a hub but you could imagine the spokes as a representation of the Hubpages personalities branching off in all directions.

Top of the Hub

In the UK there was an old chart music TV show that used to feature artists live each week before announcing who was the number one seller, this was called 'Top of the pops', perhaps we could have a similar competition called 'Top of the Hub's'?

I wanted to end this article by displaying the 'Top of the Hub' restaurant in Boston, it stands 52 floors above the Back Bay and I think this should be the destination for all Hubpages important conference meetings!

As always I include a video related to my topic, today I  noticed a lot of promotional material for a cool TV channel called 'Hub' and it brings back some of the best old fashion TV shows for children. Just like Hubpages this channel brings something constructive, unlike other commercial junk on modern TV!
