Dumb Luck Made me a Profit
First things first, let me just say that I am no expert and have only been writing online content for about 1.5 years. My highest earning article actually came by quite a shock. I wrote it about 12 months ago and it has been number 2 in Google's search results for my original target keyword and number 1 for multiple related keywords. I only had 6 months of blogging experience when I wrote this post! I didn't follow any specific plans or checklists to get it to be successful. I just tried to write quality, useful content and it was successful in my eyes.

So how did I do it you ask?...
A Great Platform
When I first started blogging, I wasn't sure that I wanted to invest the time or money in creating my own blog or buying a domain name. I started writing on Hubpages. With this platform, I only get 60% of the impressions but it is worth it when you are just starting out and don't know anything about blogging. I tend to make a higher CPM with them compared to my own blog and i can write about a bunch of different topics instead of having to focus on one subject.
The biggest perk of writing on Hubpages is that there is a writing community. People from the community will be the first to see your post and possibly share or link to it. It has also been a lot easier for me to gain momentum and page rank using this platform because you get a sub-domain on a very well known domain.
- How to Craft a Successful, Competitive, Search-Friendly Title
The best titles are short and descriptive. They should be on subjects you're passionate about that are not already extensively covered online.
My original target keyword was 7 words long. I don't want to divulge the actual keyword because you might steal it. ; ) This long-tail keyword had an average of only 140 Google searches per month and a Google Adwords CPC of $0. When I put my long tail keyword into Google search, it came up with about 655,000 competing search results.
- Under 1,000,000 search results is my target.
- At least 50 searches per month for long-tail keywords.
The trick with long-tail keywords is they usually have less competition and are easier to rank for. Once you have made your way to the top of the Google results for your long-tail keyword, people will probably be sharing it with others through social media and back links. This is when you get more momentum and it will help you rank higher for harder, related keywords.
My top 2 searched keywords to get to my blog post were not even my original target. These keywords were related to my original long-tail keyword. You can easily find related keywords for your main keyword with Google's Keyword Planner.
Type in your long-tail keyword and Google will give you a list of keywords that are closely and broadly related to your intended keyword. You can use those keywords as subtopics and subheadings of your main keyword. I have even used this method for my second most successful post. I created and entire blog outline based on my related keywords.
If your main long-tail keyword is "How to build a birdhouse for kids", you would type that in and click the "Get Ideas" button. This gave me 800+ related keywords.

Continuing with the above example, these are the average monthly searches for my main keyword and the related keywords I would probably use in my blog post.

Pinterest is one of the most important up-and-coming social networks. Are you using it to your best advantage?
Pinterest was the driving force behind the success of my blog post. If your blog post is a picture heavy type of post, like mine was, Pinterest is essential!
I received, so far, over 13000 views from Pinterest alone. This amounts to around 15% of my total views. This just proves to me how important it is to have a social media presence.
- How to Create Content that Lasts
Content that lasts tends to be evergreen (timeless), novel (not yet extensively-covered), and presented with a specific, niche, long-tail title.
Blog Post Content Quality
When I wrote my post, I didn't know all the SEO stuff that well. I literally just wrote a blog post in a way that made logical sense to me. I read it to make sure it flowed and was user friendly. I think my lack of knowledge of SEO actually helped me to be successful with that blog post. I made sure to include everything; step by step instructions and tons of unique pictures.
My advice is that once you find your keywords, don't over do it. Start writing as if you were teaching a class on the subject. If you write for the search engines alone, your content will not get shared or linked to. Write for the readers!
