How to Earn a Passive Income on Hubpages

Updated on March 23, 2016

At first we are all motivated and promise ourselves to write dozens of hubs on a monthly basis, in the hope of becoming one of the Hubpages success stories. Passively earning 500 dollars or more per month seems like a great side income for most of us. I was also one of those who was seeing myself paying my bills with the articles I had written. I was following all the advice I read in the Hubpages forum and browsed through the hubs of all of those successful hubbers. I wrote articles in my few areas of specialties, diligently using the Google Keyword Tool, did hours of research, linked my hubs with each other, used a number of the available tools, commented on other articles, responded to comments on my own articles and asked and answered questions, amongst other things. I followed many tips given by the most experienced hubbers and could eventually see my traffic growing. The first cent I earned on Hubpages already felt like a real success. I was pumped when I earned my first accolade and I gave the greatest efforts to earn more. I even created my own blogs and exchanged links in all my posts. I was collecting followers and following other talented hubbers.

I certainly do not see myself as one of the most successful hubbers but I can say that I learned a lot in one year.

How Can You Be Successful on Hubpages?

Undoubtedly, you can accomplish your goals on hubpages if you bring the following qualities/make the following commitments.

  • You need to possess a certain talent for writing and be able to catch the readers' attention.
  • You need time and patience. Don't expect to become rich overnight.
  • You will need to do a significant amount of research and create your own content. Copying existing content will not guarantee succeess in the long run.
  • You should write about topics you know a lot about (it will help you save time with the research).
  • Answering comments and commenting on other hubs you find interesting, challenging, controversial etc. will involve you in the hubpages community and attract many hubbers to your articles.
  • You need to integrate some google keywords using the Google Keyword Tool in order to achieve a good google ranking.
  • If you follow other talented writers you will be alerted when they publish new hubs. Thus you can get new ideas for your own articles, learn from experienced hubbers and help them keep going just like people will help you when you produce high-quality content.
  • It is essential to concentrate on quality not on quantity. A well-researched, original article will get you more traffic in the long run than an article that doesn't deliver any valuable or new information.
  • Leave the computer if you cannot produce ideas and come back to your article later. Usually a walk outside in the fresh air, enough sleep or your favorite sport is enough to get your brain cells to function well again.

A Substantial Drop in Traffic in August & October 2012 & August 2014

Like many other Hubbers, I experienced a substantial drop in views and traffic in the months of August and October 2012 as well as in August 2014. I was very disappointed and thought my hard work had been in vain. I read this was due to an update initiated by Google. I soaked in my disappointment and stopped using hubpages for a while. A couple of weeks later I came back and realized that my traffic had started to recover. My earnings were slowly increasing and I was beginning to see the fruits of my hard work again. Another big disappointment came in August 2014 when my earnings dropped by 30%. This was due to another Google update.

Yes, we are Google's puppets but without Google we wouldn't be earning anything worth mentioning on websites like Hubpages. While we will keep experiencing setbacks on Hubpages, we will also learn from these setbacks and keep improving. Google will keep downgrading Hubpages and this will be reflected in our earnings but through quality, we can survive those downgrades and keep being successful on Hubpages.

I learned that endurance, patience and quality is everything on Hubpages. Nobody or at least only very few among us become rich in one day. In order to reach our personal goals, we generally have to work hard and commit to what we are doing. On Hubpages, the rules are not different. After my first three years here, I still think that Hubpages is a powerful website that offers a lot of potential for talented and dedicated writers. I did not become rich in three years and I won't become rich here in the years to come. But I am able to make a steady income on Hubpages, I am constantly getting new followers and views and I can at least pay my phone bill with the money I make here. Earning money on Hubpages is actually not that difficult if you know how.

Seek patience and passion in equal amounts. Patience alone will not build the temple. Passion alone will destroy its walls. ~ Maya Angelou ~

Thinking About Joining Hubpages?

I can tell all of you out there who are thinking about joining hubpages that it is definitely worth it and fun to be in such a wonderful, talented and fruitful community. You will learn from your fellow hubbers, produce relevant content if you follow the advice experienced writers give you, improve your writing skills and eventually reap the rewards of your produced written content.

Thank you for this motivating article Jennifer. The way you broke your earnings down really helped me understand how hubpages earning system works. I just started recently and I try very hard to produce quality articles as oppose to quantity. Hopefully it pays off in long run. Thanks for sharing.

Interesting to read your article. Thanks. I already do everything you've suggested so I'd really like to know where I'm going wrong as there is a vast difference between the earnings you've listed and mine. I've been on here three years, have 268 featured articles and have hardly been making $2 a month to speak of!

Great Hub with some very useful advice, Jennifer. Patience balanced with passion is very good advice as both are needed to be a good writer.

I know it is about making money on HubPages but may I suggest a way of gaining extra income could be by repurposing a number of your articles into an ebook. Take several of them and make them into chapters of the book and at the same time possibly expanding each chapter with new content. I have noticed that a large number of ebook are no more the 50 pages so picking several related Hubs and expanding them could easily make an ebook.

And with your following on HubPages you have a ready made audience. You could sell it, or them as with 87 hubs and probably more since you wrote this, you could make several ebooks. You could sell them on Amazon, though you would earn more selling on your own website. So you pays your money and makes your choice, literally.

Anyway, good luck with your writing. And remember us all when you become a best selling author.

It's interesting to compare your progress against mine - I really like that you've shown your monthly earnings and number of Hubs over time. I'm interested to see that I'm earning similar amounts to you (at the start), with fewer Hubs. But I don't know what the future will bring for me. I think I will put my results in a fancy graph (I *love* graphs), and maybe produce a similar Hub of my own.

Thank you for this hub! This is my first month here and I have made $0.17 with 10 hubs, I was starting to worry that I was maybe below average, or even worse, below standard. But this hub is really encouraging and I am determined to put in the same hard work to get to the same level of success that you have! Thank you for the inspiration.

To me, you have provided all the tools needed to get going within the hub community and potentially earn big, by sticking with it, using techniques like Google Keywords, etc to produce hubs which drive traffic to them.

Thank you so much for sharing and look forward to seeing how you and your earnings do in the future.

I am relatively new to HubPages, so words cannot describe how happy I felt with my first penny and first featured hub.

I am otherwise unemployed, so I treat my HubPages site as a substantial part-time business - hours of advanced research and that much more with each article I write. With any venture, patience is key in order to enjoy the financial reward.

You are a great writer and I hope continued success for you!

4-6 hubs a month is not bad at all Kristen! I am also not making a lot of money with ebay or Amazon. Barely a couple of cents a month. I am making the most with the Hubpages Earnings Program. I think the key is quantity and quality. The more articles with a higher quality you write, the more you will earn, even from Amazon and Ebay. I recently updated some of my hubs and improved the unfeatured ones and now they are featured again. I would always go back to your existing hubs to see what you can add or improve!

Great hub. I've been here for a few months and earned a little over a dollar each month, except for the first month (November), when I first joined the ad campaign program. Sadly I'm not making any money with ebay or Amazon capsules. Any ideas why? I wish I can write a lot per month like you, when I tend to average with 4-6 hubs a month, due to my busy life. Congrats on that amount of money you've made. Voted up!

Val, yes that sums it up. I consider this to be my hobby though and I don't spend much time here to be honest. So being paid for a hobby is not bad don't you think? I also believe that you can't get rich in a day on Hubpages. Come back here in a year and you'll see it'll have risen substantially. The key is increasing the number of published articles to raise your income exponentially.

Thanks a bunch for this article, I am brand new to HubPages after being a member of Helium for several years. I had heard this site is better for passive income and had been looking for a hub that would give me a realistic idea of what to expect for earnings.

On Helium I had written something like 57 articles since 2007 and accrued something like $118 in lifetime earnings, however since they introduced the rating stars restriction I haven't been making much, since I'm not usually active on the site. I've only made $18 of that $100 because when you are not active on the site you don't actually earn the money you earn, if that makes any sense! So, I'm still below that site's $25 minimum payout after five years and almost 60 articles, in spite of having earned over a hundred dollars for the site.

Okay, so my rant is over for now. Too bad I can't just move all of my articles from Helium over to HubPages! From what I can see so far, it's a much better site! Thanks for this article.

Jennifer, Thanks for sharing your experiences getting started at HubPages and congrats on reaching the payout threshold at the end of April 2013. I agree with you about quality and persistence being the keys to success at HubPages. One thing to keep in mind about the month of August (and July for that matter) is that since most of the readers are from the Northern Hemisphere and are likely on vacation or doing something else besides web surfing, it's not a great time of the year for traffic. Not sure about October? I guess that was the time that Google did some kind of update, but good Hubs will recover from the Google updates, and yours seem quite good, so you have nothing to worry about.

Hello Jennifer, thanks for sharing your experiences here! I am also still quite new on hubpages and my emotions usually vary from 'I should get totally into this and spend a few months only writing' to 'I think I am wasting my time and I should rather invest my energy into something more profitable...'. Seeing the amount of time it takes me to write a hub (that is anything between a half to a few days) and the pay-off (16$ for 115hubs???) I am sometimes really discouraged... I somewhere had read that with a hundred hubs you could expect about 200$ income and found that very compelling - reading these figures here that seems to be a bit unrealistic, I guess;) Nevertheless - the good thing about writing your own content is that you develop your own skills and knowledge - and that to some extent is unpayable! So keep the good work up, much love from Mumbai!

I believe that after seeing some earnings, most people get the urge to create lots of hubs. The real problem is finding the time to do it. Some people have the time, but don't know what to write about. The key is to just write. I find that hubs about the products tend to be the most profitable because you can earn from the Hub Ad program and / or the sales (amazon or ebay). I have found great success using Squidoo, not as much here. However, it is possible. Just this week I had 15 sales from my hubs in one day. (And that's not my record.)

Enjoyed your hub. Thumbs up from me. ;)

I have been passively and aggressively writing hubs for the past couple of years, depending on what other profitable things I was doing. And now I am working on bringing my current hubs to a better place and BOOM I am making money... Not a lot but a few bucks a day. Keep it up and edit (switch things around in the hub) to keep them fresh. I usually move a picture of video up or down. This republishes the hub and SEO likes that.

Fairly new to HubPages, I have to admit, it's a bit addicting. Though I have been writing content online for quite some time now, I've only really been a member of HubPages for about 1+1/2 months now. It's exciting to check stats every day and see traffic and earnings go up. This is definitely a long time game that isn't suited for the faint of heart. In my past endeavors, long before HubPages, I've learned that it does take a lot of time, dedication, and patients, but it can also be very rewarding. Thanks for the great hub here and I look forward to reading more of your hubs!

I guess you need to be active here for a couple of years to be able to know how to handle these updates. 115 is already a great number I hope I can achieve that in a year. Nice meeting you here and keep up the good work!

This is a great hub, and I appreciate you sharing your experiences here over the past year. In April of this year, I will have been on HP for two years. Over this time I have been active on a part-time basis with most of my time spent here on the weekends. It is difficult!! After being on HP for 15 months, my monthly earnings actually hit almost $25 one month. Then the Google Panda updates hit in July and October and I was struggling to make $10-12 per month. I have slowly crept back up to $15-16 per month, but can't seem to go any higher, even though I have already written 115 hubs. But, a lot of these hubs aren't getting many views. One thing I have learned is that you have to constantly update your hubs. If you do this, you should get more views. If I was doing this full time, I would have time to constantly update my hubs and write more better articles. Voted up and sharing.
