My HubPages Earnings and Progress for 2012

My Story

I started out on HP in July of 2010, writing up a whopping total of 4 articles (please, hold your applause). Going back and reviewing my work today, I wasn't too pleased with my writing even though two of these articles proved to be a couple of my best ever, averaging around 300 views per month. I edited and revised my articles and moved on.

After being discouraged when I hadn't earned a single penny in a month (the joke was on me since I didn't had an AdSense account), I quit writing and left HubPages to start my small business. I started to get interested in making money online once more in August of 2011 when I was reading extensively on At some point there was a mention of InfoBarrel, and i signed up with the interest of earning online. After staying with InfoBarrel for about a month and putting up about 10 articles (this time with an AdSense account), I saw a couple pennies flow in. My faith in earning online had been restored, but I felt as if there was something missing with InfoBarrel. Unnerved for some reason, I remembered HubPages.

In November of 2011 I came back to HubPages, learning about the new Ad Program. I immediately switched it on and added my AdSense account, and the next day I saw that I had earned .01 cents overnight. I was amazed! I decided to leave it for a week and see what else I would accumulate, happy to see that I was earning around .10 to .18 cents per day with my four old articles. It was then that I decided to try to make some extra passive income online with HubPages. In November, I increased my number of articles to 21 and took a two month break. Still, I saw earnings!

In my short amount of time back at HubPages (I write this as of Apr/1/2012), I can definitely say when I first signed up, I was taking this site for granted. I've grown a lot in the time I've been here and am not only happy with my earnings, but just even having the ability to earn online, and the community is wonderful and full of great people who have taught me so much! I plan on sticking around for much, much longer because of all of this.

For 2012, I have a couple goals: First of all, I'd like to increase my overall article count to 100. My ultimate goal for this year though would be to make enough money per month to help finance myself an almost-new car by January 2013 (around $200/month), but that's a longshot! We'll see how far I progress to this goal by the end of the year.

With all of that said (apologies for the book there), here is a month-to-month account of my HubPages earnings for 2012. I'll be updating this article at the end of every month, so check back! If you'd like to skip through all the reading and see just the figures, scroll to the bottom of this article.

January 2012

I wasn't active in January due to being burned out from all the articles I wrote back in November, but i still saw some earnings. With my 21 articles, I saw a total earning of $3.11 for the month of January. Not much, but I was happy!

February 2012

I pulled myself out of my slump and managed to publish 20 articles this month, bringing my total to 41. I was happy to see that my average earnings jumped from about .10 cents to about .25 cents per day. I finished out the month with a total earning of $8.66, more than double of what I earned in January. Woo!

March 2012

Wow! This month was really good for me. I only managed to publish 10 articles, bringing my grand total to 51 so far, but I hit a couple milestones for myself. First of all, I officially had 50 articles published. Second, I earned my first whole dollar in one day! Awesome! My average daily earnings jumped to about .40 cents per day, and I finished out the month with a total of $15.42 in earnings. I'm hoping that I can make $30 next month!

April 2012

Even though I didn't meet my goal of $30 in April, I did get an even better surprise when I logged onto HubPages near the end of April -- I was accepted into the HP Apprentice Program! Woohoo! I start in May, and I will keep the Apprentice Program earnings separate from my regular earnings (or I just wont include them at all) so I don't confuse anyone. Also, I hit my first payout ever this month and I finished out the month with a total earning of $28.71 and 61 articles in total. I'm expecting to see around $40 next month with 71 articles ;)

May 2012

I was so close to reaching my $40 goal for May! I managed to write 19 articles and received my first check of $63.63 from HP to my PayPal account. Felt great! I'm hoping for June that I can earn $50, which should be totally doable. The first month of the Apprentice Program was awesome, and I earned $115 with it. I wont include that in the earnings table, though. Here's looking at another 5 months of fun with the AP!

June 2012

This month was a good month with the ad program and apprentice program! I managed to earn an extra $60 with AP, and around $45 otherwise in earnings. I've come across a new niche idea that I'm spending a lot of time on, so I will not be putting out many articles. This means I'll probably have to drop out of the AP, but it was a fun run and I recommend it to anyone!

July 2012

This month wasn't too great for the ad program. For a lot of us at HP, there's been some Google craziness, which is a huge part of the reason I haven't been around much; I've been working on my other side project which is going really well, and I think I'll unveil it here once it's finished. Otherwise, I only made like $27 this month, BUT I did manage to get my first sale from Amazon (I didn't have the account linked up right for almost a whole year but fixed it about a month or two ago). I managed to bring in $63.63 in Amazon sales alone from HP, and wow, blew my mind!

Monthly Earnings on HubPages

Total Number of Articles
+ $5.55
+ $6.76
+ $13.29
+ $10.64
+ $6.27
+ 45.07

Good for you! I am sure you will be able to meet your goals. This somewhat sounds like my story, I just published a hub today as a matter of fact after receiving notice that I had earned a whole's a start. I was writing articles a year ago and becoming discouraged too because I wasn't earning but I have an active ad sense acct and I will start writing articles again and maybe updating some of the old ones and see where it takes me...can't hurt right? I will definitely be following your progress :) What time is it??? Adventure Time! LOL

I would like to thank you for your honest report of your earnings. You just do not see that too much on the internet nowadays. I just got involved with hub pages and it is good to see what I got myself into and how much work I would have to do to see income from it. Thank you again and best of luck.

Voted up and out!

Its good to see you being so successful with Hubpages! Just keep up the great work (like you always do) and things are sure going to come your way. Revising and updating older hubs is one of the HARDEST things to do on hubpages, I know...I neglect it all the time. Hopefully ill be driven at some point to update many of my old hubs.

Thanks for sharing and best of luck!

Anything folks learn from the apprentice program would really be appreciated by the rest of us. I don't actually understand the concept of the program. Seems like of HP staff knew the secrets to making money here they would share it with the rest of us. You may be our only sources to the secrets of success - besides what is already written here almost daily.

Awesome Hub! Yours is the first one I have read that really details each month's earnings. I too, began with Infobarrel, quickly got discouraged and found HubPages. I've never looked back. In fact, shortly after signing up, one of my hubs made Hub of the Day! Then I also got accepted into the Apprenticeship Program (this is month 1 for me!) so any tips on that would be very helpful!

Congrats to you, this is so inspiring! I hope I can get on a roll like you have.

The first month of the Apprentice Program was awesome, and I earned $115 with it.

What I don't understand is this: If the HubPages staff knows enough about how to make money on HP to share it with those in the Apprentice Program, why don't they share it with all of us? Just asking.

Good luck to you and congrats on your success.

Very inspirational and i salute your comeback. I am also an owner of a blog and internet entrepreneur. There were a lot of comparison between hubpages and squidoo and i am fan of both. My main motive for hubs creation with respect to creating unique contents for my blog was only for creating good and high quality backlinks, but the way hubpages allow to share adsense revenue is not only effective for blog owners but also for them who do not have their own blog or business model. But, one question always strike my mind, is there anyone who is making at least 100$ per day via hubpages??

Sometimes I wonder if it's the subjects I write about, but I can't seem to earn much more than 10-15 cents a day. It could be disheartening until I read an account like yours.

$39 from 80+ articles. Not bad.

Would you happen to know if Hubpages had disclosed how much revenue we can get from Adsense from the clicks that we get from the site?

I heard that Adsense normally gives out 68% in revenue to its publishers. I am curious to know how much cut Hubpages take (if there is any).

@Lisas-thoughts101, oh God no! Whatever you earn you keep -- it's just that you don't get paid until you reach at least $50 for the month. If you earned $25 one month, the earnings will roll over to the next month so you'll need to earning another $25 to reach payout.

@TheMagician I am sure you will agree that the best way to make money is to show up high in the search engines. If you place a vid from Youtube into your content you are getting link juice from Youtube. The higher the amount of people visiting your Hub or Youtube video the stronger they each become.

Youtube has a Pagerank of 9 and it is a "dofollow." It will help make your Hub show up higher in a Google search. Each URL has its own Pagerank so you initial URL with Youtube will have a Pagerank of 0. But with some coaxing and hard work it get a Pagerank of 3 fairly quickly.

Then build a few links to your Hubpages that are from authority sites. Start with which has a Pagerank of 9 and is also dofollow. Point a link from Wordpress to your Hubpage. Point a link from your video to your Wordpress blog. Run adsense via with your blog. This is blog is also has a pagerank of 9 and is dofollow. Make sure to insert your Youtube vids in your blog.

Please be advised that each Hub your create has its own URL that can be promoted in terms of links.

      Best of Luck,

      Frank H.

I really appreciate what you've done here. The transparency with an "average user"'s earnings gives me a good deal of hope. I literally *just* started here on HP, but am I looking forward to becoming a part of what looks like a great community. This article - er, hub, makes me eager to dig in and build my library (and some day get approved from apprenticeship!).

      Thank you for writing it!

@onlinerepuations, I've never tried tying Hubs to YouTube videos before, that sounds like an interesting idea. I do know it's possible to make a revenue with YouTube though, as I do already (it's menial and not worth mentioning though).

@TheMagician thanks for your comment. I apologize as I do see you making comments. I wonder if you tied some of your Hubs into Youtube if it would help. I get my videos done on Fiverr for $5 each. I believe you can also make a revenue with YT. Just a suggestion.

@Onlinereputations, it's pretty tough to keep up with all the comments on this Hub... it sort of really took off a few days ago, seeing comments almost every hour. I don't think there'd be a difference in earnings, though.

I notice that you do not go back to this Hub and interact with people making comments. I realize you have all kinds of Hubs and wonder if it would make any difference in your earnings if tried to identify with people who have commented in your Hubs.

When I recently joined HP, I was anticipating making more than what you presented in your hub. Thank you for your honesty, so that I can stay realistic about this. I guess as the saying goes, I better not quit the day job! Thanks for the information!

Thanks for the encouragement. I have not been on too long but I am slowly, very slowly, seeing small gains. Last month I broke the $2 mark but have published more and am hopeful. Definitely sharing this.

It's great to see your progress. Unfortunately, I will have to wait another month before I can apply for an Adsense account as my hubpages profile isn't 6 months old (requirement of Adsense). However, seeing your progress has instilled some faith in me that I would be able to earn a bit through this site!

I found your article very interesting! I am brand new, no hubs posted yet. I am reading others to get the feel for things, although I have used hub pages as a great source for anything and everything in the past, now I am looking with my writer eyes on! I will be following your progress, along with my own. It's nice to have some idea of what I can expect pay wise. Thanks, Di
