The Birth of Kathryn Stratford on HubPages

I joined this site sometime in the middle of December 2012. I was searching for a job on several different employment websites, and HubPages had an advertisement as an "untraditional job". I knew it wouldn't be my primary source of income, but I was excited about the idea of writing on a website, so I bookmarked the ad for later. When I was done with my job hunt for the day, I checked the site out. At that point I had doubts about my ability to make money writing, but I decided to sign up. There's no harm in that, right?

I browsed the site that week, and read how-to articles, as well as an assortment of others that looked interesting. I started interacting with the community, and was addicted to that aspect of HubPages right away. At first I was a little too intimidated to start writing, but the seed of hope was planted in me, and the sense of great possibility stared me right in the face.

The Passage of Time

Where did the time go? On one hand it feels like I have been on this site for much longer. I have been so involved in this community, and have gotten so much out of it. It has become such a big part of my life that I can barely imagine what it was like to not be here. So much has changed in my life over the past year that it feels like it's been longer. But on the other hand, 12 months seemed to fly by.

What I Have Discovered

HubPages is a site where anyone can write. We are provided with the tools to make visually appealing articles. More than that, this is a strong writing community, and I have gotten to know so many good people. I not only write, but I read many articles that have had an impact on me. I interact with the people. I try out some of the things I learn while here. I grow, and HubPages has been a great part of my improvement this past year. I have always known myself as the writer I am, but with this site I have actually externalized it. Others can see what I write.

Learning and Growing Through Reading

During my time here on HubPages, I have read many articles. Below is a list of many of the topics, with a sampling of what I have read to the right.

  • Writing
  • Poetry ~ This site has so many wonderful poets
  • Diet and Fitness
  • Health and Nutrition
  • Frugal Living
  • DIY pampering treatents
  • Upcycling and Recycling projects
  • Arts and Crafts
  • Recipes
  • How-to articles
  • Pop culture articles
  • Holidays
  • Languages
  • Humor
  • Book Reviews
  • Gift Ideas
  • Finances
  • H.O.W. movement

My Own Articles

I enjoy writing very much, and have so many ideas that I don't always get to all of them. This coming year I hope to finish many of the articles I started, and gain more of a focus when I do have time to write.

Some of my own writing topics are:

  • Recipes: Baking mixes, recipes using the mixes, pancakes, pizza and a homemade crust, and my own variation of recipes that I whip together when I am in a creative mood. Also, reviews of recipes by other HubPage writers
  • Beverage recipes: iced tea, and spiced tea mix
  • My own journey and challenges: weight loss, writing, and HubPages
  • Employment articles, including my popular "How To Stay Productive While Unemployed"
  • Blizzards
  • Pictorial tour: Carson Beach in South Boston
  • Reminiscing and reflecting: Childhood, my friend Ellie, evaluating resolutions
  • Gift buying articles for both women and men, with many tips and suggestions
  • Informative articles: On what not to put in a garbage disposal, on finding happiness, and what to do while on public transportation, and many of the benefits of living alone
  • Humor: A selection of my favorite funny commercials
  • Roses
  • Fictional short story
  • Meeting a fellow HubPages writer in person

Great Tips For Writers

Reaching My First Payout

It was the end of November of 2013 that I reached my first $50 payout, and I received it at the end of December. It took a while, but since then the daily earnings have gone up, so my next payout shouldn't take as long to reach. But ultimately I am not here for the money. I love the community, and writing itself. It has fulfilled a yearning I have had inside me for quite a long time. The money is only a bonus.

Coming Soon:

I have started many articles already, and hope to finish them over time. I just don't want to publish them until they are ready. Here are a few topics to expect from me in the next year:

  • I have another couple of pizza recipes coming up
  • I have more recipes using the baking mixes: cookies and quick breads
  • I have a mostly pictorial hub of a beautiful park in this area
  • I have plans for seasonal hubs
  • I have ideas for a couple of relationship hubs
  • I will work on some more gift articles
  • I have started one on making extra money
  • I have ideas for hubs on the topic of frugal living
  • I have a few topics in mind related to organizing and planning
  • I have a couple of arts and crafts hubs in mind
  • No doubt there will be many more recipe hubs, because I really enjoy cooking and baking
  • A sequel to the one fictional short story I wrote a few months ago
  • Various hubs paying tribute to other Hubbers, and reviewing many more recipes, products, and DIY treatments that other writers have come up with

Many of my articles are based on what is going on in my life, and the inspiration around me. So I am sure I will come up with so many different topics. I hope you enjoy them.

This year I plan on writing a couple of articles per month. This is my second hub of January, and I feel it is a realistic goal. If I accomplish this, I will have another 22 hubs by the end of the year, bringing the total to 56 articles.

If you are interested in my existing articles, or the ones I will write soon, feel free to "follow" me, or to bookmark my author page below.

      Faith,

It's crazy, I have about 1 dozen hubs started, and ideas for more. I just need to prioritize. I have an idea of which three to focus on in the next month or so, I just need to keep myself from being distracted by other topics!

Thanks, I am very happy to have been here for one year.

      Have a wonderful Sunday, too.

      Rebecca,

      Thanks, I appreciate it.

I actually have the recipe and photos for one of the pizza hubs now, so I very well may "cheat" and finish that one before I start one of the few I plan on completing over the next few weeks.

Have a wonderful Sunday evening, and thanks for taking the time to read and comment.

      Bill,

Thanks, that means a lot! I know I have been a bit scarce lately, but I will get back in my groove. I have published more lately these past few weeks, although 2 were simple recipe posts. I have several I'm working on that are more like some of those that I am most proud of, and I am excited to continue working on them soon.

I am very glad that I have met you, and many others here that have been so helpful to me, as well.

Have a wonderful evening, and a productive week.

Congratulations, your name is one which I have grown accustomed to seeing over the past year, this our first year together on HubPages. You are so right - this has been an eventful year and a year where both you and I have grown quite a bit on this site.

I am amazed at your ability to write on so many subjects at the same time! I tend to tackle my Hubs one at a time - just like a dog gnawing at a bone - going at it until there is not even a morsel left to eat.

I do wish you a very productive year Kathryn - I hope you have a very Happy one too.

      Sally,

Normally I tend to work on one at a time, but lately I have been flooded with so many ideas. Unfortunately it also takes more time to get one done. But I am in no huge rush, so it is okay!

It's cool that we started around the same time. It's also nice that we have both learned and grown on this site.

Tanks, Sally, and I wish you a very productive and happy year, too! Thanks for taking the time to read and comment.

      Nate,

I'm glad you feel the same way. I can't imagine running out of ideas, although I do have to be in the mood for a topic in order to actually finish it. In a pinch I could be more disciplined, but for now I am just going with what I am really into at any given time.

Thanks for taking the time to read and comment, and have a wonderful week.

Thanks, and I'm glad you're close to your own first payout. It can be exciting.

I have liked you since the first time I saw you, so interacting with you has been my pleasure. Good luck in reaching your first payout, and achieving the one year milestone.

      Have a great day!

Congratulations! That first year feels amazing. You are also around the mark where I started to see increasing traffic and earnings. It takes a while for articles to age and get traffic, but once it starts rolling it's great. I'm trying hard to cross the 200 mark, but it really is a lot of work.

I think you have the right idea though, pace yourself and enjoy it! I'll get back to that soon.

Thanks, it really does feel great to cross that point.

I can believe it's a lot of work! This site is not for those who want money fast or effortlessly, although I know some people come in with that expectation. For me it is just satisfying.

Thanks for taking the time to read and comment, and have a fantastic weekend!

Congratulations on your hard work, drive and determination and for making our lives much better with your enlightening and educational articles which often make us think outside the proverbial box and that is what great writers always do - make us think and feel for ourselves - and of which you are one. I enjoy writing on this site, and writing in general. Although many times I start working on something, and don't finish it for a while.

I am working on an article at this moment, and hope to publish it within the next couple of weeks. It should be interesting!

I think that many join due to the idea of making money online, but once here discover so much more! Nice article and now that you are getting established, I think you will soon get payouts a lot faster ... but, enjoy the writing first and the money is sure to follow eventually.

I am really looking forward to when you start writing again, we all love your hubs! I was wondering when you would begin writing more hubs again, it has been a while but since you moved and are still settling in, it must be very difficult for you to write. After all, writing here is a big commitment. I am looking forward to your next hub. Good luck with everything and wishing you the best,

Congratulations, Kathryn. I also completed my first year at HP on the New Year day of 2014. It is very difficult to translate ideas into Hubs. Ideas are ideas but hubs are immortal. I wish you accelerating your ideas to celebrate more and more anniversaries to celebrate silver jubilee at HP. I have yet to encounter a hubber who celebrated silver jubilee though hubbers have crossed 25, 50, 100 or more number of hubs.

      Cyoung35,

Thanks, I appreciate it. I had quite a bit of time on my hands early last year, which gave me a chance to kick-start my writing here. If I had been working long hours at the time, I may have never really gotten so much done, so that was one of the hidden benefits of not working for a while.

I'm glad you liked the video. I always like to find useful videos, so that makes me happy.

Thanks for taking the time to read and comment, and have a wonderful day.

I see you have made Hub Of The Day. You are great at what you do. I always love to see people reach different milestones in their life. I like to think of it as the greatest highlights of my life in living color. Time has an amazing way of slipping by and before you know it is another hour, day, year. Congratulations on your first year! I don't think one time was enough. When I read a hub I spend 80% of my time reading each hubbers comment and closing my eyes and I try to see the hub through their eyes. A different point of view. A different perspective. I can spend hours on your comments alone seeing how your writings affect others. Here is to your continued success as a writer not just on hubpages but wherever your heart takes you. Thank you.

I enjoy reading comments, too. It's good to view things through other people's eyes.

Thanks, I think my heart will bring my writing pretty far, at least compared to where I always thought I would be. For so long I thought nothing would come out of my passion, but this site started the ball moving in the right direction.

Reading about writers leaving hubpages concerned me. I enjoy this site so much why wouldn't other people. Is there something I am missing?Have you looked at other writing sites that offer more. I realized I don't have the time or the effort to keep going on two sites. I feel devoted to the site that gave me my start. I try to read as many hubs as I can but now the number of hubs becomes overwhelming. I find so many people so interesting I run out of time and have to go to work. I enjoy your progress and your journey. I am very happy reading your topics and your thoughts. I sometimes go back to a few hubs that I love the best. So I hope you don't mind I love to leave more comments on your old hubs.Have a great day.

      Dream On,

I am loyal to the site that gave me my start, and I want to always stay here. I haven't had as much time to write lately, but I do when I have the time.

I am also on Bubblews, which is a pretty good site. I prefer this for the layouts, but the other site is great for publishing smaller articles with less content, or ones that are a little more personal. There's no worries of whether or not it will become featured. I personally don't keep a set schedule of reading or writing, but do it when I have the time.

Thanks, and I need to get over to your page to read some of your poems. They inspire me, make me think, and cause me to feel calm.

Thanks for taking the time to notice my progress and comment, and have a wonderful day!

Congrats on the one year. This is a very addictive site, and that's all due to the great writing community. The money is a nice bonus though, it takes a long time to establish, but then keeps on coming in. The key is to write about what you enjoy most and keep writing. From a traffic perspective, the biggest mistake I made was diversifying too much. It helps to focus on a few things you really like and search engines generally prefer that too.

Good luck for the coming year!
