On My Way to My First Million With Hubpages!

Updated on February 8, 2015
Soon to be mine!
Soon to be mine!

Tips On Earning Big Bucks with Your Hubs.

Today is a big day for me...my very first earnings with hubpages appeared on the earnings page: three cents! This is huge ("from small beginnings...", right?). I am torn between putting it away safely, and rushing out to spend it in celebration!

For all you even-newer-than-this-newbie hubber, here's how I reached this coveted earning status: a cooking family, plastic Easter eggs and making a dining table bigger. Now if that can rake in 3 cents for me, you can do it too!

But you have to be patient. It took me eleven days to get this much. But now the sky's the limit! My mind is already racing with the possibilities for next month: 6 cents (cumulative earnings)...wow!

I know you are itching to get to the crux of my story, so right here right now I am going to share with you my very own secrets of success.

Have a good rootle around hubpages before you start writing hubs.
Have a good rootle around hubpages before you start writing hubs. | Source

7 Habits of a Successful (Newbie) Hubber:

1. Read, read, read. Don't even start writing your own hub until you're sniffed and rootled all around the hubpages website, especially the Learning Center (fabulous), hubs about hubs and hubs by "hot" hubbers (yes, folks, with my 3 cents in my pocket, I too rank in this exalted status now!). Read how they do it, study their hubs carefully.

2. Sign up for stuff on the earnings page (payment settings, affiliates settings etc) under "my account". I didn't do this until I'd published four hubs. Heck, I could have earned 11 or 12 cents by now if I'd cottoned on to this sooner!

3. Connect with the hubbing community: comment, answer questions, ask questions, follow hubbers whose writings you like. But be smart, thoughtful and discriminating. Flabby and vanilla comments, and following hubbers randomly will not earn you kudos in the community.

4. Look at your published hubs with a critical eye. If they are are not getting you comments and traffic, edit them. New title? New keywords? Keep trying to polish them up so that they work harder for you.

5. Become an SEO Pro (Search Engine Optimization ). This is what will drive traffic to your hubs, essential if one of your primary goals is earning. Read hubs on SEO smarts.

6. Be a super-hubber, not a sub-hubber. Research, check, edit, and proofread. Write quality hubs and with time, your hub-star will rise in the community and earn well for you.

Put your 3 cents in here!
Put your 3 cents in here!

7. And finally, don't let it go to your head. Sure, we could all go crazy with 3 cents, but where's the sense in that? Put it carefully into your piggy bank and get back to writing more hubs. Those pennies will grow before you know it!

Watch out for my next hub: "What I Did With My First Hubpages Million" (to be published TBA)!

Thanks for this funny clever hub. I enjoyed reading it. I am starting to wonder how I will actually get all the money which has been accumulating in my account-about $40. This is after more than a year writing and about 30 hubs. I seem to be making about $5 per month but I haven't figured out all the angles yet.

I enjoyed your article. Sometimes when I read articles which have more than 2 or 3 spelling errors or typos I think to myself... How can this person actually publish this without at least reading it over once or twice to correct mistakes?

I like your hub's catchy title and the points you had to put across. It reminds hubbers of errors they could easily avoid while getting engrossed in the writing of hubs. New hubbers also stand to gain a lot with the information. Thanks for sharing. Voted up.

Very funny hub. You had me from beginning to the end. I too was thrilled when I earned my first few cents. It was exciting to be earning anything from my writing. I have now after 8 months received payment from hubpages for the last two months. Being in the apprenticeship program helps but the learning curb can be fast and hard work will eventually pay off. I'm still not ready to quite my day job but I am enjoying the process of learning and writing for HubPages. Welcome to the community!

My pennies are still adding up. I have not reached my first payout yet. But here is to hoping and staying positive. I'm following your advice and will continue reading and posting hubs until the day it starts to pay off and beyond!

    • JayeWisdom profile image

The earnings may start slowly, but you're right--they grow and those pennies accumulate, become dollars (or pounds, francs, pesos...well, you get the idea). Finally the day comes when you receive your first payout, and you're on your way!

I don't know about you, but I feel that making even a smallish amount of money from writing I publish online allows me to call myself a "professional writer." I like the sound of that....

May we BOTH reach that first million on HP!

Oh, so much hub-love, thank you everybody. I am very chuffed to have won the hubnugget. ANd you're right, Tonipet, hubbing is addicting (in fact I had an idea to write a hub about that, haven't got to it yet...the problem is finding time!).

ANd Medical Alarms, what the heck is Google Panda Update? Whatever it was, wish it was still here, those earnings of yours are awesome!

Cherylvanhoorn, I am intrigued as to what a "bounce approach" to hubbing is, do tell more. Whatever it is, hope it's working for you, and welcome to hubpages!

And Lifes 2nd Chances, I love "light and breezy". It's kind of who I am, just a fluffball floating through life seeing the funny side of things. But tricky to apply this writing style to probation/parole issues. Now that's a challenge...good luck!

Now bravewarrior, you are clearly doing pretty well, with or without HP patrol...3c a day you say? That was my first month's earnings!! (But I wouldn't quit my day job just yet ;)

So many great comments, thank you so much, everyone. Keep up the good work!

    • bravewarrior profile image

Yeah, we're certainly not making millions are we? I'm excited tho. For the first time since I became a hubber, I'm up to .93 and today's only June 14th! Whoo hoo! I think now I can quit my day job!

Seriously, tho, the friends I've made here at HP and the valuable information I've received is helping me with my writing-for-a-living-goal.

Now, if we can just get the HP police to stop telling us we're duplicting our own hubs, maybe we can earn more than .03 a day!

Who was it that said there are no new ideas????? Come on HP patrol, lighten up!

I need to decide within the next few months because if I keep making money at the rate I have been, by then I'll be making 3 figures. That's right, I should be hitting $1.00 by then.

Excellent hub and it was an eye opener for me. I have taken a bounce approach to my hubbing. I am still in the early stages, I am only three weeks old, but the whole technical issue has been a great challenge for me and I am working hard toward understanding that.

The information that you have presented here has been awesome and very, very helpful. It is great seeing the results that you are getting (three cents, WOW) an amazing achievement and the humor and practicality that you used to approach this milestone has been like reading a 'hubpages for dummy's.'

      Wonderful work!

Love your comments, hubbers, I guess we're all on common ground here because every million grows from that first 3c. But no, Taalb Pugh1, I'm not quite there yet.

This hub is outstanding, the intro was awe inspiring to us hard working hubbers who dig deep into the core of hub intelligence here to craft our masterpieces.

You my friend are definitively off to the races with this hub here, not only have you stunned many of us in the hubpages community with your writing ability, you've also managed to figure out how hubpages works pretty much, and surely the part where the hubpages community gets to shower your hub with hublove, and shoot it up the ranks amongst the top elite hubs, where I like to call "Hub Heaven".

Your level of smarts it light years beyond most of us, and I can tell because you've also managed to save that large amount of hub cash and save it where it counts most. Your piggy bank!

Voted up on every level imaginable, and this one is getting shared up across these digital clouds and super friends networks in a quick hurry. Awesome job!

This was funny and I can totally relate. I have to say, those that started with the Hubpages Ad program are in a much better spot than when I started with only the option of Google Adsense. Ha! Love the way you've set this up and very entertaining.

The big question is which charity are you going to donate your earnings to?

I remember my first earnings on hubpages was about 10 cents and thinking "Oh Cool, now let's go for a $1.00" and now I'm paying my electric bill with my earnings.

Just keep at it and your earnings will continue to grow and grow.

I see it as like watering a seedling, you know it's under the dirt, you know you're feeding it but you won't see the results right away but the patience you have to continue to water it will help it grow.

Welcome to hubpages by the way!

Thanks for rootling through my hub, Gemini Fox :) Sounds like you are trying to figure out all this hubstuff just like me...I have to confess I find it pretty overwhelming (not a very techy person!)

But, just fyi, I did sign up for Adsense only after publishing about 3 or 4 hubs, and was approved and have already earned...$1.86!!! Enough for a pack of Twizzlers which was always my baseline earning goal, so this is good ;)

30 hubs is a LOT!! With my minimal wisdom and experience, I would recommend you sign up with Adsense before that, as I was successful doing this. I just want you to be able to earn a pack of Twizzlers too!

    • Gemini Fox profile image

When I first got to HubPages (about 2 months ago now), I rootled (LOVE that word) around for awhile, too. And while I was rootling (heehee) I discovered some hubs by relache about making money on HubPages - maybe you've seen them . . . Anyway, relache said that it was a good idea to build up a "presence" on the internet before signing up for all the ways you can make money, because Adsense (I think) can reject you if you haven't been a "presence" for very long. Maybe you already have a website somewhere else so this is not a concern. I haven't signed up with any of these ways to make money yet - kinda scared to attempt it til I've got about 30 hubs (what she recommends). Just thought I'd say, but apparently it's not affecting you.

Thanks for the comments and for sharing experiences, fellow hubbers. Going to start up with Google Analytics on lifelovemystery's advice. Nothing like frittering away another few hours at the computer...

And sherrilee, I haven't much experience with hubpages, but I did have a career in writing about a hundred years ago before all the small people came along. My advice: write what you know and love, not what you think people want to read. Be yourself, and your passion for your topic will shine through as genuine and interesting to read. Good luck!

Fab. Sounds so easy to earn a few cents but I can't write too well. Any tips?

Congratulations on your windfall. Hopefully much more to follow. It's fun to watch those pennies add up, even when it's not much money.

I use Google Analytics on several websites. It is very easy to set up and they give you step-by-step instructions for the process. You will probably spend more time obsessing about the data from Google than the data from HB.

Thanks lifelovemystery. I still have to do Google Analytics, but it sounds kind of complicated...

I have eight hubs so I finally signed up for Google Adsense, Google Analytics, linked my PayPal account and submitted my tax info. Congrats on your first pay day!

You're right, TENKAY, and apologies for taking the mercenary tone in my hub :) It is gratifying when somebody else takes the time to read your writing, and comment on it. I do get a buzz from that too!

What I was excited was getting my first comment. It was like, wow!, somebody read what I wrote.

Maybe later on, I would know how to go about earning from my hubs, getting external traffic, etc. At the moment, creating beautiful and interesting hubs are my main objectives.

Thanks for all the comments and laughs, hub-peeps! Guess I'm not alone in being excited at the first few cents!

OK, c'mon Odessit, spill the beans on how you made your first million (you know I don't really have a clue ;)

A really funny hub. I remember the day after my adsense account got approved; I checked my earnings and found that I'd earned...4 cents. I nearly fell off my chair haha! I was really excited, I'd actually earned money from something that I wrote. Great work and welcome to hubpages, have fun.

Great hub! I can remember vividly my first two cents earning in hubpages. It was so magical that i had published two hubs about how i achieved that. How it all happened? In brief, i registered on that fateful day, i tried and included all the ad programs and adsense, then published my first hub at about few minutes pass ten pm. To my greatest surprise and bewilderment, only to wake up and found two holy cents in my earnings account.

What? I thought to myself. I can tell you that no matter what is happening right now with our traffic, my mind is focused on making my first million here in hubpages. Ah ah!

So you see we are on the same wavelength, keep it up!
