Rating Hubs

Updated on May 7, 2011

How do you evaluate hubs?

Evaluating hubs to rate them up or down is a big issue for me as I used to evaluate teachers' and students' work for a long time. I know that when someone gets a negative feed back he/she might get disappointed as people do an effort and this should be appreciated and at least should be creticised according to specific rubric.

Have you ever tried to build your own rubric to evaluate a hub fairly?

Evaluating a hub or a blog needs you to think critically about it. What I'm trying here is to help you building your rubric to vote hubs up and down according to reliable criteria.

  • First; think of audience: Is this hub appropriate for the intended audience or readers of Hub-Pages.
  • Second; authority: Ask your self who is the Hubber. Is he a Hubber that has an existance on Hub-Pages or he follows the policy of hit and run to advertise a website or a product or another blog. This can be discovered simply by looking at the auther's profile and having a look at what he/she has published before.
  • See how much this hubber has influence. Who and how many people link to this hubber hubs? and does it appear to be a part of community? The best hubs are hubs for folkswho share interests with the hubber. So it's not a must that you like the hubs of this hubber if he/she is not sharing your interests.
  • Comprehensive: Is the content covered in depth, and how sophisticated is the language "Grammar and spelling"
  • Is this a first-hand view? Is it unique? Or just a copied item with no addition.
  • Is this hub using many capsules to enrich the hub and to attract readers to the end of the hub?
  • Linking to other hubs: Is this hub linked to other hubs that are informative and related to the topic that the hub covers.

Hi Kafsoa, I agree, we see eye to eye on "rating hubs." Cool hub topic, I will be reading more of your hubs.

Yes dave you're right, some people don't read the whole thing and just rate. Thanks for the link:)

There's another element to fairness in rating - and I am distinctly not fair about it. That is, reading hubs consistently. How can you rate hubs fairly if you don't read most of them? This begs the question, is it truly fair to rate hubs knowing that you can only ever read a tiny fraction of them?

This brings me to the conclusion that perhaps fairness isn't the goal, but usefulness to the audience.

You might appreciate the hub I just posted about product reviews online:

Veronica; there are two ways to link you hub with other hubs. First is by adding a link capsule as you're creating your hub and put the URL of the hub you want to link to your hub at the specified place and then then click the add button. you can add URLs as much as you want ten click save.Don't forget to write a title.

Another way is after writing your hubs and publishing it. Y|ou click on the green button at the top of your hub that says "Suggest links" and this will allow you to just high light the phrase you want to link it with other hubs "shouldn't be more than 6 words". a list of pages and hubs will appear to you where you can preview any of them and see if appropreate or not. Then you click the + sign to the left "in green" so the phrase is linked to the page or hub.

Another way as you're creating or editing a text capsule. To link phrases on your hub by another hub of your own "or of others if you have the URL" Just highlight the word or phrase you want to linkto the hub and click the "link" tool in the text capsule and either you select one of your hubs from a provided list there and just insert or you paste the URL in the specific place then click insert.

Oh I talked too much sorry. But I hope this was useful to you :)

..well I don't make money here at the Hub (I guess I am truly a starving artist -lol) and I really don't give a hoot in heck about hubscores .....but the feedback and the comments have been fantastic and life affirming - and I seem to have artistic freedom and of course I get to meet great and talented people like you who have carved out a niche of their own - and yes your hubs are 'hubawesome' .....

Very insightful. Thank you! As a newbie, I'm certainly learning the ropes, and having "seasoned" hubbers writing hubs that pertain to -well- writing hubs has been a much-needed blessing!

I've been trying to figure out how to link my hubs to others, to no avail. I have done so when writing on my own website, but cannot figure it out here. Help? =]

Alastar; you've got my point darling:) Yes, this tool allows some people who are not fair enough to judge. But if every body is fair, someone will get the real feedback.

kafsoa that's unfortunately true. and also some do out of competition, envy and other reasons. but if a hubber hangs in there and puts out good stories and interacts often particularly with sincere comments the score water so to speak will always find its proper level. Losers can only vote someone down once.and often they will come back later wanting to do right. You are a good writer kafsoa, just keep learning and practicing. Yours k

Thanks Dream on, your hubs are really amusing and giving pleasure. One of the important features of HubPages is the variation, I really enjoy reading different topics in variety of fields. I find that your hubs are unique and not everybody is having the talent to write such wonderful articles. Just write what you feel, and it's not a must to make it very difficult for your self you're wonderful as you are. By the way I'm not a good writer, I'm just a researcher with a moderate experience because I've lived too much:)

A great hub has so many points to consider.I am learning to expand on my topics but I rather turn my life into poems/stories so I can connect with others.I find so many hubs interesting with knowledge of each important subject.I try to come with more personal experience and some interesting twists to keep the hubber amused and entertained.Any suggestions that would help me along since I am slowly improving and like to become a better hubber.Have a nice day.

Thanks Alastar for reading and commenting here. I wrote this article because I've seen that some people rate hubs down because they lean to a certain political or religious aspect regardless to what is the quality of the article or what does it add to community.
