Squidoo Payday Questions & Answers

Updated on June 17, 2014

Squidoo Payday FAQ

It never fails, every month on payday the same questions are being asked in the SquidU forum. Most of them by new lensmasters, but surprisingly, there's also quite a bit of confusion among some who have been around for a while.

Figuring out how the payout works was one of the first things I wanted to learn as a new lensmaster. I asked a lot of questions in the forum, and I asked some to Squidoo HQ directly. I've been around for a while now, and I'm just about certain I have it straight. ;)

I always help answer questions in SquidU, and thought it was time I wrote out everything here in one place. Hopefully you find it helpful.

What is the minimum payout?

Can I change the default?

$1.00 is the minimum amount required to receive a PayPal deposit from Squidoo.

You can select the amount you want to reach before you get paid. Start by going to your dashboard. Select the My Profile tab. Scroll down to your Payment Settings. One of the options there is Cash Payout Threshold:. Click on the Change link next to it. You will be able to choose from $1, $5, $10, $15, $20, or $50.

I always suggest setting your threshold to $1.00. You only see your individual lens pay stats when you reach your threshold and get your PayPal deposit. If you want to wait for a higher sum you can leave it in your PayPal account before transferring it to your bank account.

If you do not reach your Cash Payout Threshold your earnings are held in your "Reserve Hopper" until the next month, or as many months as it takes to reach it.

*** Update: Starting with the July 2014 payout, HQ is changing the cash payout threshold to $25. ***

When will I see my first payout?

How long until I start earning money with Squidoo?

If you have sold an item through your lens right away your first payday will be 2 months after you published your first lens. Squidoo's payout schedule has a two month delay. Money you earn in January, for example, will be paid out to you in March.

If you haven't made any sales yet through a money maker module, your first payday will come the following month (3 months after publish).

After their first month lenses start to earn a portion of Squidoo's AdSense revenue, so even if sales are few and far between you will typically see a payout every month after that.

One reason you wouldn't is if the lens is a WIP lens, a Work In Progress. If your lens has a

symbol on your dashboard it's WIP.

What day of the month do we get paid?

When is pay day?

According to Squidoo, expect it on the 15th of the month, and if it comes before that it's early. They really just say that incase they run into a snag. Payday is usually well before the 15th. Update: It's now usually very close to the 15th.

How is AdSense paid out to lensmasters?

What are the payout tiers?

AdSense and Glam Ad revenue is not paid out based on clicks from your lens. The amount generated by all of Squidoo's lenses is added together and divvied up based on a Tier system.

There are usually 3 Tiers, I've seen a 4th reported on rare occasions. The "best" (read: worth the most $) is to have a lens in the first tier. The average lensrank, per lens, per month, is used in determining which Tier your lens falls in for payday.

Note:

The lenrsanks posted below are rough guidelines. Lens averages might be off by mere decimals from one another. After your lensranks are averaged they are then reordered based on the calculated ave. of all other lenses.

Tier 1 is for lenses with an overall lensrank of 1 up to 2,000.

Tier 2 is for lenses with an overall LR of 2,001 up to and including 10,000.

Tier 3 is for lenses with a LR of 10,001 up to 85,000.

Each month the amount each Tier receives varies depending on sitewide traffic and Ad click-throughs.

As an example, on the December 2008 payday:

Tier One got 25% of the ad pool

Tier Two got 17% of the ad pool

Tier Three got 8% of the ad pool

These are all of the previous tier payouts since this system was implemented:

InfoLink Payouts

Now "Text link ads"

You've seen the green, double underlined links that get added into lenses by Squidoo. Those are InfoLinks. If you don't like them they can be turned off, but doing that keeps you from earning from this new revenue source.

The Infolinks pool is separate from the Adsense pool. Although the size of each tier is the same (ie. 2000 lenses in the first tier), the lenses that fall into each tier may vary from the Adsense pool since some lenses are opted out.

Chitika Payouts

Chitika ads are newest revenue generator for lensmasters. They are only shown to traffic coming to your lens via a search engine (Google, Bing, Yahoo etc.). Chitika looks at the search term that brought them to your lens and places relevant ads on your page. This appears in the sidebar of your lens as a text list of recommended offers.

The Chitika pool is also separate from the Adsense and Infolinks. Link Infolinks, you can opt out of Chitika ads in your Lens Settings if you choose.

This was the last Chitika payment on Squidoo.

What is the deduction for?

Something isn't adding up.

Squidoo takes 2% out of our AdSense pay to cover PayPal expenses.

That's why you might notice different amounts on the monthly stats verses individual lens stats.

When will earnings show up in my PayPal account?

Where is my money?

If you see the payday "blue box" on your dashboard and then check to see if you have gotten the deposit in your PayPal account, don't be surprised if it's not there right away.

Some months the deposit happens later that day, some months it happens the next day, and on rare occasions it happens a few days later.

What is the $$$ column on my dashboard for?

Why does each row show $0.00?

The $$$ column only shows sales that have been made through your lens' money maker modules (Amazon, eBay, CafePress etc.). Adsense earnings will not show up on your dashboard stats.

Since we are paid two months after a sale is made the totals you see are for more than one month's worth of sales. Don't expect to receive all of what you see pending in one payment.

How do I make sure the payout is correct?

Keep your own records

Many lensmasters like to keep record of their earnings. I know there are quite a few of us with spreadsheets and other documents.

If you think you will want to do this it's best to start right away. It can be difficult trying to get it all together months down the road.

I use Excel to keep track of how each lens and group are doing, and to see how much I've contributed to various charities. At a glance I can see how I'm doing over a months time, or year, or since I've started.

I also earn money through my lenses from various affiliate programs that I've joined. I keep track of those sales as well.

It's also a good idea to print or save the lensranks of your lenses. Remember they have started using your average lensrank over the month, so doing this at the beginning, middle, and end of the month might be the way to go. I just print out the final day of the month for a rough idea. This way you verify if your lens was put in the correct tier.

How much did you make on your very first payday?

The amount before any charity deductions were taken out.

Wow...I was just looking at the Ad Pool revenue over the years. It seemed to grow every year (with a cycle that tended to go down a bit in the spring and went up during Fall, but always going up). Just look at the December earnings...they go up every year until 2013 (hmm...also when they did that big LENS PURGE) and then from then on pretty much went down. I mean, in 2013 it started like normal...a small downgrade in the spring, but it kept going down each month, with only a small uptick in November/December, and continuing to go down in number every month this year (save for an unusual uptick in April).Hopefully this is just a temporary setback due to the huge amount of pages lost in the 2013 purge. I'm hoping it will swing back eventually.

@fishysails: Squidoo isn't a blog. Each lens (Squidoo page) is built around a specific topic. We can earn a portion of Ad Revenue which is all explained up above on this lens. We can also earn from sales we make. If you add an Amazon module to your page, and someone makes a purchase after clicking on your link, you get a small percentage of the sale. If you need more clarification, you can ask at the Squidoo Forum: http://hq.squidoo.com/forums

I have a silly question! How do we make money? What does it mean by sell? I cant seem to understand it. Does it pay you by how many people read your blog? I really need someone to break this down for me.

2012 & the first third of 2013 was the best time for Ad Pool payments, while 2012 was a banner year for text ad payments. It's so sad to see the difference between those payments and current payments. You can see why several lensmasters left Squidoo after that. I always wonder if payments will ever be like that again, but I certainly don't count on it...

    • Christene-S profile image

      Christene-S 3 years ago

@Dave Lynch: Money on your dash $$$ column is from sales. If you haven't sold anything from a particular lens it will show $0.00.If you mean the earnings tab in your stats for each lens... either the lenses with no earnings aren't old enough yet, or the lensranks weren't high enough to get Ad revenue. This coming payday is for November earnings. A lens would have to have been live in October to qualify for Ad $.

Thanks for the info. This is my first month on squidoo and I've published 8 lenses so far. I check my stats daily to see where I stand and was so confused about how it all works. I'm sure I won't totally understand until I'm here longer, but I'm getting a better grasp from your tips. I'm definitely bookmarking this lens!

@Zdiddle: Yes.You should be able to see the amount pending in your Reserve Hopper. But you won't see a lens by lens breakdown. See if anything is listed on your Stats page : http://www.squidoo.com/stats/show

    • Zdiddle profile image

      Zdiddle 4 years ago

@Christene-S: So if you set your payout high, then you will only see that stats for the last month which reaches that threshold?

    • Christene-S profile image
      Author

      Christene-S 4 years ago

@Zdiddle: You'll only get stats for months where you reach payout. That is why I suggest people to set their threshold to $1.Your join date doesn't matter. This payout was for lenses that were live the whole month of July. They would need to have been published in June or earlier to be eligible for a tier payment. Even if they were published in June, if they didn't reach a high enough average lensrank, and made no sales, they would not see any $.

    • Zdiddle profile image

      Zdiddle 4 years ago

I have a question regarding the two month waiting period. Everyone asks questions about payout, but I want to see my stats. I've been a member for more than two months and don't see any. Is it two months from joining or from posting your first lens?

@adrianna72: No, you can't use your own Google AdSense account with Squidoo at all.Squidoo has their own. Then all of the site's Ad revenue is divvied up to lenses based on lensrank.

    • adrianna72 profile image

      adrianna72 4 years ago

I'm struggling a bit here. One of my main concerns is, do you "have" be enrolled in Google AdSense? Is this mandatory? I tried to apply, but denied. I think I did something wrong in the application. They mentioned one thing about the website having HTML?...please help!...

@Christene-S: When I learned this, I think it made me lose some faith in the Squidoo team. Squidoo, as a site, has been pretty dynamic, and I've seen it grow quite a lot in extent. It seems pretty poor management to leave the tier cutoffs unchanged even as the site's traffic and total number of lenses published on the site change. This page was also really helpful in explaining things...it explains things much more clearly than any of the official documentation. Again, if I were running Squidoo I'd make all this info more transparent and easily accessible as official documentation. This page is, in my opinion, an excellent resource and it's the #1 place I check if I have a question about payouts.

    • profile image

      anonymous 4 years ago

@Christene-S: That's too bad. I guess that the Amazon and other monetizing modules are more important to focus on for income. I have 2 lenses that would be in tier 3 right now, if they stay there for a month. And one of them got a purple star award to get there. That's pretty hard work.

    • Christene-S profile image

@anonymous: No. Unfortunately the tiers have never changed.

    • profile image

      anonymous 4 years ago

Does the size of the tiers change as the number of lenses grows? If not, more and more lenses will be outside the 3 tiers and be bringing in visitors but not getting a share. 85,000 out of 2,500,000 is less than 3.5% of the total.
