The Story of My Five Years Online Writing or Hubbing

Updated on March 30, 2017

Sunil Kunnoth loves reading and writing apart from his other hobbies of music and travel. He is an active hubber.

What I Gained and Earned From HubPages

It is wonderful to note that I complete five years of hubbing this March (2017). I created an account in HubPages on 18th March, 2012 and wrote my 1st hub on the same day. How I joined HP, how it influenced me how I progressed here, questions like these and some other points too were well answered by me through my previous hubs. Please find the same and read if you are interested in knowing more about me and the HubPages. My each and every progress as well developments related to online writings were well documented and most of them on a positive tone. But regret to confess that this time my narration may have a different flavor obviously for the reason that things are moving not in a smooth way now.

Well, the first question I ask myself is what I learned and gained during these five years. My honest answer is what I attempt to share here. Great! I learned and gained very much through hubbing. I wrote 129 hubs till now and this is my 130th hub. Also, I got 270 followers and hundreds of comments praising my hubs. Besides, a couple of Accolades are decorating my profile page. And of course, the added advantage of a good number of friends and followers in social media.

Traffic or Readership

Of all the achievements so far I made, the one I consider the most precious is the accolade on gaining 100,000 viewership. I was too excited on that day when I received the congratulatory letter from HubPages editors in my inbox. And now, my next goal is getting 1 million hits! Luckily, I am on the way of that great dream as this month I crossed the 600,000 mark. It is an extra delight and ecstasy when our write ups reach such a large audience. Isn't it? As any other hubber, I too think this will be an amazing achievement. But how long it will take is another question and a thing unpredictable for an amateur like me.

My current traffic of readership is in a slow pace. But I had a good time here when I got nearly 1000 hits daily. That is a past story. I am sorry to share that currently I didn't get even one fourth of that score. In the past, I had a weekly reach ranging between 5,000 and 6,000. It is a pathetic story now. How I lost my traffic? I can attribute some reasons. Nowadays, I am not at all engaged in writing. Regret to say I didn't write even a single hub during the last 16 months. And to add injury to the insult, no participation in forum, not asking questions nor answering any questions, no editing of hubs, not sharing hubs, etc. I can find plenty of reasons for the poor performance and the resultant negative growth. No new followers or fresh comments on my hubs now. I can't blame anyone when I sit idle and not doing any serious job here. I know I need to write, read other hubs and leave some comments and share the interesting ones. I need to be active. But, the lack of time is the major problem thanks to my certain official engagements. So I pay little attention to the hubbing hobby. Yes, it is my hobby and not a day job. Still I love it. I wish to change and hope to change soon.

Editing Hubs

It was shocking to see that out of my 129 hubs, nearly half of them got defeatured due to low traffic and quality problem. It is an alarming state for a hubber that his creation is not visible in Google search! So I took some extra efforts to edit my hubs and got a wonderful result. Now, nearly 75% of my articles are featured. This also means now a great number of my hubs are visible on Google. I am happy and aim to achieve at least 90% success rate on this count at the earliest.

Earnings

A hot topic all wish to know more. Fine, so far I could earn more than 500 $ through online writing from HubPages and happy about it. It is a moderate sum for a part timer. But the disappointing point here is that now earnings too go on a slow pace. What I earned once a week is now earned once in a month! Anyhow I have set a goal of 1000 $. But how? I have no idea and am clueless.

The lesson I learned: Hardwork pays!

I had worked here so well once and it had its own super result. Now, I am lazy. This naturally reflects on my performance and progress card. Less traffic, less earnings, no comments, no new followers, no fan mail and no fresh accolades. Everything on a bad note!

So, I wish to start afresh. I wish to regain my lost glory. Hope everything will come back positively.

Advice to New Hubbers

As already stated, I had a good time here once. During that season of success and popularity, I had written a couple of hubs, and all to help the freshers, sharing some tips and tricks for a smooth drive on the tough terrain of online writing. Please read the same. It will give you some sort of confidence and equip you to make a a long journey. For your convenience the links of that hubs are placed extreme below.

You must know one fact: Winners never quit and quitters never win. I wish to come back again to the winning track. My plan and strategies will be designed accordingly to achieve my future goals. And by the time I finish this note, a ray of confidence is hitting me so vibrantly, which is helping the sailor in me as a light house to sail smoothly and safely.

Now the words I hear is that of Winston Churchill: Success is the ability to go from failure to failure without losing your enthusiasm". I am blessed that my enthusiasm is not lost. The proof is this hub!

If you have been away for a while, I think you will now be pleased with upcoming results. If your articles are moved to a niche site it will help you achieve better results.

You have decided to come back at an exciting time. Congratulations on your 5 year anniversary, and welcome back.

Congratulations my Hubber friend. We all go through slow times, but as you say, if you love to write, this is the place to hone your skill and learn. I can't imagine life without writing. I do not write for monetary gain. I write for the love of writing. Hope to see you back writing soon...

Sunil, congratulations on five years at HubPages and also for having reached 600,000 views. Both are significant milestones. I am glad you are going to once again devote time to this site in an effort to attain your former glory. Good luck with your goals.

It's nice you have achieved so much. But Hub pages is not the site to earn money. I give an example. In last 4 months I earned $994 on blastingnews.com. I earned just $12 on Hub pages during same period. So one can write but hubpages is not the vehicle to earn. Best of luck to you
