What Are and What Do Accolades Mean in Hubpages?

Updated on February 8, 2013

In Hubpages, hubbers are given a challenging quest of gaining accolades. This motivates writers more because it adds excitement, but others think that they are just "nothing". Now, what do these accolades actually mean and imply? And what do they say about the hubbers?

Accolades are badges that appear on the Profile page that represent each hubber's achievements in the Hubpages Community. Some show certain Milestone achievements (threshold figures in parentheses) while others represent the contributions one hubber has given to the site.

Trivia: Some accolades come and go (go down in level or totally vanish), depending on the criterion set by Hubpages. For example, if a substantial amount of your followers un-followed you, you may go 1 level down.

Here are the accolades showing milestone achievements:

The Hub Views Accolade

Hub views (1,000, 10,000, 100,000, 1,000,000, 10,000,000, and 100,000,000)

How to get the accolade?

It's very simple! All you need to do is to have decent amount of high-quality hubs and gain readership. I've seen other hubbers with only 10+ hubs but have earned the 10,000 Hub views accolade. This means that each of their hubs are seriously getting a huge amount of traffic. But there's a remedy if you are receiving a low to fair amount of traffic only. That is to post more hubs! If you are only averaging 200 views per hub, then you need to have 50 hubs in order to get the 10,000 hub view accolade.

What does this accolade say about you?

The accolade may represent one or a combination of these:

  1. A High Quality Writer - as previously mentioned, having original hubs with high quality will drive traffic towards you organically. This may be represented by this accolade.
  2. A Hub Machine - having the accolade may indicate that you are posting a lot of hubs that generate normal amount of traffic.
  3. A Diligent Hubber - some hubbers receive a lot of views due to their effort in promoting their hubs in social networking sites, forums, back linking sites etc. All these require effort and time to achieve, hence having a lot of views may entail that you worked so hard in getting traffic and that it really paid off.

The Followers Accolade

Followers (100, 300, 500, 1,000, 2,000, 5,000, and 10,000)

How to get the accolade?

To get the accolade, you must gain certain amount of followers in Hubpages. This is somewhat difficult to achieve because only fellow hubbers can follow you.

What does this accolade say about you?

The accolade may represent one or a combination of these:

1. A Fantastic Writer - a hubber that writes highly engaging, unique and quality-oriented hubs will sure make a smashing hit among readers (which include hubbers). Hence, many among them will look forward to your future posts and will subscribe/follow you in the process.

2. A Well-Known Person - if you are already a well-known individual, people will follow you definitely regardless whether you write satisfactory or excellent hubs. But this case is rare.

3. A Compassionate Member - other people follow other hubbers because they have helped them navigate and understand the workings in Hubpages. There are some who are very eager to help other hubbers in their problem (especially beginners). In return, people will follow them because they appreciated the help.

The Hubs Accolade

Hubs (10, 50, 100, 300, 500, 1,000, 2,000, 5,000, and 10,000)

How to get the accolade?

It's straight-forward. All you need to do is to be able to post the required number of hubs.

What does this accolade say about you?

The accolade may represent one or a combination of these:

1. An Enthusiastic Writer - completing each threshold level of this accolade only means that you are an enthusiastic writer who never runs out of ideas. And has the passion to share things he/she knows about.

2. A Robot - there are a few hubbers who post just for the sake of having a lot of hubs. These are people who don't mind if they are able to meet high standards in writing or not. The result of this is having hubs that are not that worthy of reading.

The Years on Hubpages Accolade

Years on Hubpages (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 10)

How to get the accolade?

Just have an account and be maintain it for the required number of years. Yeah, it's easy but would take some TIME.

What does this accolade say about you?

The accolade may represent one or a combination of these:

  1. An Enthusiastic Writer - this is somehow similar to the previous accolade in some degree. Enthusiastic writer sometimes are swayed by their passion in writing that they don't notice the time. They will just be surprised that they have already been writing for years now.
  2. A Solid and Loyal Member - this accolade may also mean that you are a loyal member of the Hubpages community. Let's face it, Hubpages has its fair amount of competitors, and some may prefer other writing community and shift away.

The Questions Made Accolade

Questions made (50, 100, 300, 500, 1,000, 2,000, 5,000, and 10,000)

How to get the accolade?

This is actually a misleading accolade. For some, they might think that they need to make 50 questions to earn the Questions Made Accolade (50). However, the true measure for this accolade is the number of answers generated by the questions you made. Hence, you need to ask questions that will really engage hubbers in order to earn this accolade.

What does this accolade say about you?

The accolade may represent one or a combination of these:

  1. An Inquisitive Writer - some hubbers ask questions that really stir up other hubbers' curiosity that tend them to participate in answering and unlocking mysteries in the questions asked.
  2. An Engaging Writer - other questions are made to be very much engaging that make people feel like they can connect with the topic/question. And some hubbers have the gift of asking engaging questions.
  3. A Person of Controversy - I've noticed that controversial questions also lead to the generation of several answers. This is possibly due to the arguments (and rebuttal) presented in the answers.

The Questions Answered Accolade

Questions answered (10, 50, 100, 300, 500, and 1,000)

How to get the accolade?

This is fairly easy. You need to answer questions asked by fellow hubbers in order to gain the accolade. To increase in "level", you need to answer more and more questions daily.

What does this accolade say about you?

The accolade may represent one or a combination of these:

  1. A Person of Ideas/ Knowledgeable Person- hubbers with a lot of ideas are the ones who can basically answer almost all of the questions hubbers can raise.
  2. A Person who Connects - there are hubbers who can relate well with the questions presented, and they engage in them by giving answers and personal opinions.
  3. A Bot - similar to the hub accolade, other hubbers answer questions just to get the accolade. They do not often really care about the questions and give senseless response.

Now, let's proceed to the accolades representing the contributions given by a hubber in this site.

The Great Commenter Accolade

Comments Made (Level I to VIII)

How to get the accolade?

To get the accolade, a hubber should engage with fellow hubbers by leaving insightful comments to their hubs and responding back after being commented by the Hubowner. Getting the Level 1 Commenter is easy. You just need to leave about 10 comments to other people's hub. But getting the Level 8 Great Commenter Accolade will require some extreme effort. Perhaps leaving 3 comments per day will get you the accolade some day, of course the more effort you pour in commenting, the faster you'll get the prize.

What does this accolade say about you?

The accolade may represent one or a combination of these:

  1. Great Commenter - the accolade says it all! Having this accolade (with a higher level) means you are fond of engaging with other hubbers. Great job!
  2. An Enthusiastic Reader - commenting wouldn't be possible if you haven't read the hubs (unless you are #3). Thus, having commented a lot means you have read quite a number of articles here in Hubpages.
  3. A Bot - just like the one we are continuously tackling about, some hubbers are not sincere in engaging with this community. They end up leaving bland, plain and cold comments just to get some accolades without even possibly reading your work.

The Popular Accolade

How to get the accolade?

Get enough feedback from fellow hubbers (and non-hubbers) and you'll surely get this in no time! Feedback are the clickable buttons at the end of each hub saying whether the article was useful, funny, awesome, beautiful and/or interesting. Unfortunately, not all of the readers (especially non-hubbers) know that they can click on these; hence, we usually rely on the votes of fellow hubbers, unless you device a way to inform your future readers that they can click on these buttons to say describe their reading experience.

What does this accolade say about you?

The accolade may represent one or a combination of these:

  1. Informative Writer - when you write highly informative hubs, people will find them either useful and/or interesting (or even awesome). Continue writing high quality and informative hubs and you'll surely get the accolade! So, if you already won the accolade, this may mean you are a great and informative writer!
  2. Doctor - if you know how to locate the funny bone of the readers, you'll definitely be a star! You'll gather up votes on 'funny' (and/or 'awesome') and gloriously end up with the accolade!
  3. Empathetic Writer - winning this hub may also mean that you know how to touch the emotions of other people and connect with them. This is often the reason behind getting tons of those 'beautiful' votes! And it is indeed beautiful because you got this pretty accolade.

The Great Discussion Started Accolade

How to get the accolade?

In order to win this accolade, your hubs must generate a lot of great discussions in the comments. Based on my observation, it seems like the number of discussions generated vary upon the number of hubs you've published. So, the criteria could be a ratio instead of a fixed number. Try to maintain a 15:1 ratio, that is 15 comments generated per hub.

What does this accolade say about you?

Kindly refer back to the Questions Made Accolade. The implications are somewhat similar, the only difference lies on the context. That one particularly refers to answers induced by the hubber, while this one refer to the comments induced by the hubber.

The Great Hubpages Citizen Accolade

How to get the accolade?

This accolade is one of the easiest accolade to acquire! Even if you are just starting, you can get this in a few days. According to the FAQ section of Hubpages, to get this hub you must participate in the forums and in voting up/down some hubs. But actually, the secret is to start Hubhopping, read on the article, and vote up/down. Do this everyday with at least 5 articles, and you'll get it in no time!

What does this accolade say about you?

The accolade may represent one or a combination of these:

  1. A Diligent Reader - Hubhopping is very tiresome. It consumes about 30 minutes to an hour especially if you are serious in doing the task. But efforts are being paid off here in hubpages. So being able to get this accolade may mean that you are truly diligent!
  2. A Voting Up/Down Machine - Other hubbers start hubhopping, ignore the article, scroll down to the bottom of the page, vote up/down, click on Hop and then do this all over again. This definitely lacks sincerity, but others do it.

The Engaging Writer Accolade

How to get the accolade?

First, to win this accolade you should know how to understand what the readers need (or deem to be of value), so that they will really read your articles from start to finish. This is the key in getting the accolade! To gauge this, most of your hubs should have 5 stars in the View Duration (you can view this by clicking on "stats" on top of your hub, and then clicking on the "Hub Metrics" tab). If you were able to sustain the 5 star rating among your hubs, you'll definitely be awarded with this hub. Note, however, that you may lose this accolades especially when most of your succeeding hubs would receive 2 to 3 star ratings.

What does this accolade say about you?

The accolade may represent one or a combination of these:

  1. An Engaging Writer - The accolade may mean that you were able to write something that readers find useful, informative and interesting. These three things will keep your readers on your page, and will be compelled to read everything!
  2. A Lucky Writer - The chance of this happening is very slim, but it may still happen to you. Other people may linger on your page for a long while because they might have shifted from another tab, and forgot to close the tab where your article is located.

The Hub of the Day Winner Accolade

How to get the accolade?

While other accolades can be acquired through your own efforts, this accolade will not be that easy to catch. You should come up with an "exemplary" hub (as they put it) that will be useful and informative for the entire community. For more guidelines on how to win this accolade, check out the learning center (The Hub of the Day Program). Some hubbers are unknowingly not abiding by these guidelines, that's why they lose their chance of winning the accolade.

What does this accolade say about you?

The accolade may represent one or a combination of these:

  1. A Compelling Writer - winning this special accolade is indeed very special! It means that you were able to write a very compelling and sincere hub that made Hubbers appreciate things that you wrote about.
  2. An Engaging Writer - winning this accolade means you know your audience so much that you can see things the way they see it. And hence, you were able to make your hub fun and highly engaging to read. Usually, aside from this accolade, you'll also be awarded with 'Great Discussion Started' and 'Popular'. This is because readers are excited to ask questions and leave feedback & comments in your winning hub/s.
  3. A Creative Writer - by being creative, you can also win this accolade. Write something that has never been written before (it could be about the least noticeable thing on earth, and yet be able to come up with something very great about it)! If people see that your hub is out of the ordinary, the odds of getting this accolade will definitely increase!

The Hubnugget Winner Accolade

How to get the accolade?

Practically, the methods in how to get the Hub of the Day Winner Accolade still apply on this one. You may check out the learning center (The Weekly HubNuggets Competition) to know more about it and its distinction with the earlier accolade.

What does this accolade say about you?

Refer to the ones written on The Hub of the Day Winner Accolade because basically, they don't differ much. The only difference lies within the qualification. For this accolade, only new hubbers who are a member for fewer than 60 days (but have a Hubber Score of 75) are qualified to get this accolade.

The Hubbie Award Accolade

How to get the accolade?

Uphold the true spirit of quality, informative, creative, compelling and engaging writing and you might get this one of a kind accolade that will let you stand out! Remember this is given annually, so it's really one in a million. Refer also to the The Hub of the Day Winner Accolade because it will help you win this seemingly unreachable star! Also, be sure to put your heart in every activity you will do here in Hubpages, you'll definitely increase your chance of getting this!

What does this accolade say about you?

This accolade implies that you are a fantastic writer that is worthy of glorious renown! Imagine you were able to stand out in this community! You were able to reach something that most of the hubbers only aspire for! Furthermore, the extraordinary thing about this accolade is that it also implies that you were able to touch a lot of lives, humor a lot of people, feed the minds of readers and inspired tons of fellow hubbers! You are definitely worthy of the title!

@Dee aka Nonno Yup! I appreciate the Accolades, but at some point, you will start ignoring them. However, in my case, I still rejoice receiving some accolades, especially those that are difficult to obtain.

I made a nice read. You have done a good service to educate the fellow hubbers understanding the concept of Accolades, its importance and relevance. You have taken a great effort in this regard. Good and easy language make your hub a pleasurable reading experience. Hope in future also you attempt to write such informative articles for the benefit of fellow hubbers. I thank you once again for the great work.

@Tracy Conway I like the analogy of the accolades being reward stickers. :)

Regarding the fluctuations in the commenter, I guess people would easily identify if we are already long-timers here in Hubpages ,not because of the "Level of the accolade", but because of the message/content/comment we are sharing with them.

In fact, there are some (yup, not many) who already reached higher levels for this accolade but still leave bland comments on other hubbers' hub. Just my observation. :)

Thanks Tracy for sharing your thought!

@mary615 Yup, I experience something like that. I lost my Commenter Accolade, but fortunately it got restored after a day or two. I guess sometimes accolades are lost due to bugs, but perhaps there are times when accolades are lost because of inactivity, and other reasons. Thanks for commenting mary615!

I think the accolades are cute and remind me of the reward stickers that my children get at school, but really have no meaning in the grand scheme of things. The prospect of sharing useful information and meaningful ideas here on HubPages has the greatest value to all. That being said, I think you did a great job of explaining these accolades and your graphics are very nice!

I was surprised to find that my commentator level changes based on my current activity level, apparently my past activity has little bearing. I am not sure if this makes perfect sense. Lets say that I am an active commentor for a year and then take a hiatus, when I come back my score goes way down. When a reader sees this score they may mistake my comment as being one coming from a newbie and not an experienced hubber. Just a thought. I understand that this fluctuation in score works to keep hubbers engaged continuously.

Other than the time on HP, hubs written, and traffic accolades, the rest are useless as an indication of success here. And by the way, when a member is banned from the forums the silly mods remove 3 of the accolades--those indicating the banned person is worth listening to, coincidentally. LOL! Of course, when the ban is over one becomes worthy again. LOLOL!

But don't forget, favoritism plays a large part in some of the accolades given to certain members. There's no doubt about that if you've been here a while. Don't take these little virtual perks seriously.

I think you've done an impressive job in explaining the accolades you chose to enumerate. For me, the accolades are like a pat on the back, a little positive reinforcement -- especially when earnings alone don't fit the bill.

It's a long story @yougotme. But to sum things up, I'm a freelance writer and have been doing these for over a year now. Sadly I got scammed by one of my latest employers. @CassyLu1981 Thanks for the uplifting comment! It means a lot to me. Anyway, I'm planning to update this hub with all the rest of the accolades. There are still others like the Hubnugget Accolade, Hub of the Day accolade and etc. :)

Sometimes it is nothing and sometimes too, I feel it is a boost for hubbers. Any which way, I love seeing them and looking for them in any hubbers I visit.

My pleasure joaniebaby! Accolades are pretty much cool and indicative of your progress here in hubpages! Wishing you all the best! I'm sure you'll get more of them next time.

Thank you for explaining the acclades. I just noticed three on my account and was wondering what they meant. Now I know. I voted this Hub Up and Useful!

Thanks for dropping by angela! Actually, I was thinking that the other accolades are self-explanatory. But I guess you're right. I should include them too. :)

There are other ones too, that I was curious about their meaning as well. Thanks for informing me on these ones though.
