Trying to EARN MONEY WITH HUBPAGES.COM ONLINE Makes Me Hungry (1/12 Update)

Updated on March 13, 2013

Sometimes I make pennies! | Source

I LOVE WRITING ON HUBPAGES.COM

The feedback I receive is awesome and addicting. Over the past almost three months (Note: an 11-month update is below), I’ve spent a lot of time learning about keywords and search engine optimization (SEO). I’ve learned how to incorporate most of the easy to use tools. I’ve signed up with Google Adsense, Amazon Affiliates, eBay, and the new HubPages Ad Program. And I’ve made some really great friends that have truly become my special HubPages family!

I WANT To Make Quarters
I WANT To Make Quarters | Source

I have a passion for writing, always have. See my article MY PASSION FOR CREATIVE WRITING: My Friends and Family Don’t Get It. If I am going to continue to spend so much time on my passion, I need to earn an income. I still do not understand and possibly never will . . . how others on HubPages.com claim to “earn a living.”

Source

ADDING UP MY EARNINGS (after 3 months)

Adding up my earnings from the HubPages Ad, Google AdSense, eBay and Amazon Affiliate programs, I have earned enough to buy two gallons of gasoline or better yet, 9 and 1/2 $1.00 McDouble’s at McDonald’s. Yet because a much higher balance is required to cash out, I am not even close to obtaining a burger off the dollar menu. Don’t get me wrong, I’m thrilled I am making something. But I’m hungry. I need to learn more about maximizing the earnings on my HubPages.

MY STATS: 3 Months on HubPages

In an effort to put my little earnings into perspective in hopes of gaining some assistance, here is a brief overview of my HubPage statistics:

Number of hubs = 30

Number of page views = 3,658

Number of comments = 764

Current overall earnings = $9.47

Note: There is an **UPDATE** below with stats at 11 months on HubPages

The intent of my openness about my earnings is twofold. First, no doubt there are others who will understand because they are hungry too. The caregiver in me doesn’t want them to feel alone. Second, I want, need and would appreciate feedback. HELP PLEASE!

I BEGAN HUBPAGES ON FEBRUARY 22, 2011

As a new hubber back in late February, one thing I clearly remember reading over and over is that you must be diligent, do not give up, and eventually you will see a residual income worth waiting for. I believe I’ve done that. I have not given up. I don’t want to give up.

In addition to all the time I put into my writing, I have spent even more time reading others work. I have read more in the past few months than I have in the past 10 years. Plus I have read many of the not-so-easy-to-follow forums. My reading glasses are really getting a work out.

IT'S DIFFICULT WITHOUT A STEADY INCOME

Things would be great if I had a steady income with an eight hour a day job and then worked on my writing passion when time permitted. That is not currently the case. I lost two really good jobs in the past few years only to leave me frustrated and bewildered.

I would love to be one of the lucky ones who earns a living doing their passion. Is this realistic? Maybe not. Probably not. But I can be stubborn and am not equipped to easily give up.

HELP FROM MY HUBPAGES FAMILY

I am ready and willing to absorb whatever else I need to learn here on HubPages so I feel as though I really gave it my best shot. I am thirsty for advice, opinions, suggestions, information, guidance, recommendations, feedback, warnings, etc. ~ PLEASE TOSS THEM MY WAY either through the comment section below or through the contact Sharyn’s Slant link on one of my article pages.

I appreciate any assistance that comes my way. Besides, we are family right?

With Sincere Thanks In Advance,

This is Sharyn's Slant

**UPDATE TO MY STATS: 11 Months on HubPages

Number of hubs = 54

Number of page views = 14,100

Number of comments = 1,921

Current overall earnings = $50.35 (HP Ad, eBay, Amazon & Google AdSense)

WHAT I'VE LEARNED AFTER 11 MONTHS ON HUBPAGES

I wasn't sure if I should update my stats and TELL ALL making me feel somewhat vulnerable, but I did, because I think it's important for new HubPage members to see that this is not a "get rich quick" endeavor. I do believe that I will continue to earn more as I publish more hubs on a regular basis and continue to learn more about marketing my work.

Although I do lose my momentum at times, inevitably when I take a close look at my stats, I am not giving up.

SO, HERE IS WHAT I'VE LEARNED OVER THE PAST 11 MONTHS ~

~ I learned that I love HubPages and am thrilled to have finally taken the risk of sharing my passion for writing.

~ I've learned that HubPages is like a second family to me. The feedback and support I receive is more than I could have ever expected. I have finally found friends that understand my passion.

~ I've learned the true meaning of "residual" or "passive" income. It does not mean "get rich."

~ I continue to learn the ins and outs of important things like SEO, titles, keywords, tags, marketing, HTML, back links, and so, so much more!

~ I've learned that even with something like writing on line, you should "never put all your eggs in one basket."

~ I've learned after 11 months on HubPages that I, honestly, am "still hungry." And yet I have been fulfilled in so many other ways!

Hi dgicre ~ I apologize for it taking me so long to respond. Life has been quite busy. I agree with everything you say here. The bottom line is to realize that it takes many many hours of hard work to finally see an income stream. But if you stick to it, it can happen. Thanks so much for your wonderful feedback.

It's sad to see so many talented individuals spinning their wheels. Having done this for a few years now, and yes I started out new like we all did and made many of the same mistakes. I quickly learned HubPages is great for learning the basics. How to put together great articles with images, subtitles, great content and pictures. This is important as the only real way to make money from Adsense is to have your article or hub on Page One of Google, preferable in the top 3 spots. You will never make 5K a month here. Many wont even reach their $100 payout.

Now if you take what you learn and create your own blog on a single subject niche. This means if you are going to write about blue widgets, every post should be about or closely related to blue widgets. If your really lucky after many months of hard work backlinking and promoting your blog. The stars line up and one of your posts finally makes it to page one on Google and you have a hundred or so posts on your blog about blue widgets and you are an authority about blue widgets, and if your subject and content is good enough and your blog starts getting 300,000+ page views a month you may start earning anywhere from $50 to $300 a day with Adsense.

This takes many hours of hard work, it does not come easy but when you get there, it's totally worth it. Keep trying and remember there are no shortcuts, hard work and dedication is what pays off.

Hi Alisha ~ It really seems to me that your earnings are quite good for only 7 months. It truly does take time. I believe I finally hit my first HP payout (which must be at least $50) when I hit my 13th month on HP. I only started following you recently and have seen you've published quite a few hubs in a short time. You'll hit that payout pretty quickly I believe. Your articles and topics are really good and I was wondering if you've considered applying for the Apprenticeship Program? I think you'd make a great candidate and it will help you gain a higher income more quickly too. Thanks so much for your great feedback. Good luck to you!

This article was really helpful for me! I'm fairly new to HubPages and am still learning so much! So far I've earned $40.21 (through all sources) and I've been a member of HP for 7 months. There was about a two month period where I went off the map, but for the past few weeks I've been more active on HP and have already seen a significant increase in earnings, followers, and comments. There is hope! I also enjoy the interaction with other people who are passionate about writing and those who actually enjoy what I’ve been writing...that's what keeps me coming back!

You struck a cord...lol. I remember a line from a movie, Terms of Endearment, I think...."as hard as it is you wish it were that easy"...we love to write, we have a passion for it, but the business of writing is hard work and most of us just don't have the time to put in 24/7. All any of us need is one really good break and then we can give up all the other things we do to survive and just write. I am looking forward to the day that I will be earning lots and lots and lots of money...until then ????

      Really enjoyed reading your hub.

Hi Sharyn, we joined Hub Pages at almost exactly the same time. My start date was 2/19/11. I have 80 hub, around 32,000 views, one payout of $62 and aprx. $36 pending. I have had to face the facts that I must make my writing income elsewhere (i.e. content mills) but this type of writing will always be my passion.

I found your hub trying to find how to register for the 30 day challenge. It would be lovely to think that this will bring in income and I do think the hub ads are a little misleading in that they put income as a carrot to attract writers. However, what I really enjoy and it's worth a lot is the free feedback and support from the hub community. Joining has also stimulated my writing and helped me make it a priority. I hope you will grow your income and that I will too; and that all hubbers will feel rewarded through being part of the hubbing community. So many beautiful people on hub pages.

It's unfortunate that after all your hubs and time that only a few dollars come your way. But, it's better then nothing and may just be the foot in the door process. Shayrn, I have found making money on hubpages-- particularly due to the content i write-- to be a little frustrating but, I've gained tons of experience as a writer, gotten published in a few other places. I feel I'm setting myself up for a decent residual yet supplemental income.

Mostly though, I've gained friends and colleagues. I feel hubpages has allowed me to gain an audience that will make it easier for me to obtain writing work and selling my own books down the road. It's very valuable but I do feel hubpages needs to make it easier to earn money so they don't lose valuable writers. They're making money hand over first...

Kel ~ Better sooner than later :) I still have so much to learn about back linking. I have a written list of sites to consider, it all takes time. I did Twitter and Digg but there are so many more to check out. Good luck to you too!

THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR COMMENTS. MY HEAD JUST SPINS AT TIMES THINKING ABOUT ALL THERE IS TO LEARN TO REALLY MARKET YOUR WRITING ON LINE. I KEEP TELLING MYSELF - PERSISTENCE, PERSISTENCE.

PLEASE KEEP IN MIND CAGSIL'S COMMENT ABOVE ABOUT BEING CAREFUL NOT TO VIOLATE GOOGLE'S TERMS OF SERVICE. I WILL DEFINITELY LOOK IN TO THIS FURTHER AND DECIDE IF THIS HUB NEEDS TO BE REVISED OR EVEN REMOVED?

I noticed a ton of traffic when I signed up with Redgage, etc. and like others said - back linking. Good luck some more my friend:)

Sharyn, it is good to see what others earn so we can have more realistic expectations. I'm hungry too - maybe ramen noodles might be more realistic than a cheeseburger, but until then I will keep panning for gold! How's that for mixed metaphors!

Hey Sharyn, I'm not sure if someone has done what I am about to, so if this is a repeat, so be it. You should be very careful discussing your "earnings" and "clicks" which are made. It's a violation of Google's Term of Service. I suggest you re-read it to ensure that this particular hub isn't violating their terms of service. If Google Adsense sees your hub, it could possibly cost you your account.

As for those who are making decent money, well many of them have found things that work to draw the earnings. Example: Habee, Hubber/Author/Ex-Teacher has over 900 hubs and she is over $1000+ per month in earnings. I can understand everything you talked about in your hub, but I would also like to remind you of something I said once before, both at Hub Hoppers and on the Forums- It takes about 3 years for one hub to fully mature. That's with regards to earnings and traffic. So, please take that into account also.

Thank you for sharing your experience. Much appreciated.

This is very interesting Sharon. I got off to a very slow start on HP, and earned very little for months. After 7 months I’m about where you were at 3 - but my earnings have been increasing steadily of late. This month already I’ve earned more than all of last month, and that was the best till then, so I’m keeping my fingers crossed it keeps going that way. I’m certainly not giving up, and it glad to see that you aren’t going to either!

I was interested to read that the HP Ads made your google income drop to nothing. I have always had the HP ads, and have had very little from Google, I didn’t realise there could be a connection.

      Thanks for sharing this.

Thank you for sharing this data Sharyn. I think if more hubbers saw this article, they're have realistic expectations of earning here, rather than the hundreds of dollars promised by the HubPages front page. Voting this Up and Useful.

Thank you so much for your awesome comments. Your feedback and support is very much appreciated. I like how you say "my own business." Just those words alone excite me. Thank you for the fan mail and "digging" as well. I'm learning so much lately and look forward to more pennies rolling in. Good luck with the 30/30. I thought about doing it but now wasn't the right time for me. Best wishes and I hope to find time to check out more of your work!

Sharyn, if you can keep writing hubs that cause this number of comments, then you are well on your way. I would absolutely kill for this number of views of a hub. Hang in there and the money will come. I am currently doing the 30/30 Hub Challenge. It is tough after just 7 days in, but I am already seeing an uplift in followers, page views, earnings, although still only pennies a day, but they have been doubling up on the odd days. Most of the people who brag elsewhere on the net about their earnings are lying to make you pay for and join their schemes. Hub Pages is a proper programme with real people. You can say to anyone, hand on heart that you are making money in your own internet business. Imagine your business to be a big business and one day it will be. Take small, daily steps and momentum will gather and you won't be able to stop it I feel sure.

Great hub and voted up / awesome

      Hi Sinea,

Great timing for your awesome comment. I go back and forth with being discouraged. I am not near a payout. But I will not quit! I began here having so much to learn and I continue to learn daily. I know I have improved and am proud that I made the top 100 list. For now, that means more than the pennies that float in. When I first started, what sticks in my mind is how many people said you MUST hang in there. It all takes time and learning. They were SO right. No matter what, I'm having a blast on HP. It's quite addicting. Thanks for your comments, happy new year!

Hi Sharyn...I understand your frustration but I know, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that continued writing of good, keywordly sound (is that a word?) content and some social networking will bring a consistent residual income someday. When I have days of doubt, I go back to the testimonials of HubPages' top writers and get excited about it all over again! BTW, I just got my first HubPages ad program payout and will have my first Google payout soon (.25 cents away, do you believe it? LOL). Someday, EVERYDAY!

Hi Sharyn, This is a really interesting hub, mainly because of it's fabulous clarity and honesty. Everything I've read (up til now) about earning money on Hubpages, makes it look like, if you just take this simple steps, you can make great revenue here. Your experience and thoughts are exactly what I believed it's really like, so thank you kindly!!! (I'm not giving up, but I'm not looking at this as anything more than a fun, little challenge. Maybe I'll afford a coffee out of it one day. :-)

As for the first penny thing: I think you should print out a digital picture of one, and frame that. You could make a little plaque underneath that reads something like, "My First Hypothetical $$."

      Good Morning Teylina,

I honestly had no idea how to answer your question so I've tried to do some research. It appears that you can add Clickbank links to your hubs no more than 2X each hub. There is a lot of information out there but it is confusing to me. Here is the link to the HP Learning Center on how to embed links into your hubs. https://hubpages.com/community/Learning-Center-how...

When I find a little time, I will join Clickbank and see how it goes. I'll try to let you know what I find out at that time. Thanks for stopping by ~ hope you have a great weekend!

Haven't checked out this hub for a while, but I just saw "Clickbank" mentioned by Charles. His comment makes me feel better, because I too have been unable to get on Adsense, although, supposedly, I have done everything both Adsense and HP has told to do; now each is passing the buck as to why I'm still "pending" after 5 mos. Maybe they'll clear it up in two years! In the meantime, what is "Clickbank" ??

Probably I should fine tune my writing little more to drive more traffic. But as you said, these small amount also excites me. Small drops make an ocean. So lets keep trying. Happy hubbing..!!

Sharyn, I hear you. I joined 2 years ago, have 26 hubs and just earned 14 cents with adsense. So you're doing better than me! BUT that's because of an adsense problem trying to change my email address. Finally fixed yesterday - after two years!

So, I never relied on adsense at all but did make some Amazon sales and a few Clickbank sales. Great advice and comments here from so many others. You're on the right track, and you will get to where you want to, maybe sooner than you think!

From what I have read by people who are successful, you need to write for more than one website. At this time, I write for 3. One is just articles on religious information. The other two have several topics. I submit my articles to a website that pays a small upfront payment and then pays per click. If they don't think the article is good enough to pay me upfront, I publish it on Hubpages. Hubpages pays more per click that Yahoo Contributors. So, if they won't pay me upfront, then it just makes sense to publish it on a website that pays more per click. Especially, since that is all I get from those articles. I have a small amount of articles on Hubpages because I have been putting articles on here for less than a month. And, I, too, have not earned much at all. But, I have over 400 articles on the other site. I don't make much on the clicks, that. Which is why I wanted to try Hubpages. There are other sites, too, that pay you to write. You might try doing some writing for additional sites and see if they all add up to an income you can live with. But, like others have pointed out, it takes a lot of time and you have to build up a pretty substantial library of articles on each site you write for.

Good luck. Hope it works out for you! :D

Well, the whirlin' dervish that takes over my brain from time to time has been fighting for control of the remote for a few weeks. My remote default is set on writing, and the peace, fun, venting, and love that it can set off! I love readin', writin' and ____So glad I'm following your hub, Sharyn, because it brought me back to my priorities! Far from being a materialistic person, I still find having "enough" is much easier than not having it--most of the time. When started in Jan, hoped by summer HP would provide just a tiny bit (tank of gas a month, perhaps?) during the summer mos when I have no work, and maybe in time, it might help me get off the 'sub-teaching track,' which is getting tougher all of the time. HOWEVER! Thank you all so much for your responses to Sharyn's Slant. I've got my priorities back! No more belly-aching about lack of income here; I've made more friends than enemies (I hope!), so it will all work out; I've no fear!
