Tweaking and Improving Old Hubs

Updated on April 23, 2013

Time for Improvement

I decided to take a month off from writing new hubs and concentrating on the old ones. I am a bit disappointed in my views. I have written over 150 hubs, and I do think it is time to review all of them. I am going to check spelling, grammar, photos and tweek the content. I plan to review between 5 and 10 a day depending how much work is necessary. I also am going to spend some time on keywords and see if that will increase my views.

There is no doubt I am a better writer since starting here at HubPages. i have learned a lot from other writers often by just reading their hubs. It is always a good idea to go back over old work and see how we have progressed with new ideas and just higher quality writing. So here starts my journey. And I am going to go over each and every hub.

Photos

I am going to add more photos to some of the hubs. I have many hubs that have not received very many views, and giving them another chance with corrections, additions and new photos may give a new lease to them.

Recipe Hubs

I have many recipe hubs and unfortunately most of them have not fared well in the viewing department. I am going to redo some of the instructions, and maybe offer different ideas for each recipe. I would like to show substitutions that can be made to create a slightly different taste. And very often someone may want to try one of the recipes but does not have all the necessary ingredients. And sometimes this is as simple as substituting canola oil for olive oil. I think this will add more dimension to recipes. Also want to check out the best keywords to use to entice others to search for my particular recipes.

Photos from Different Hubs

Astrology

Enjoying Life

Life and Issues with Aging and Diet

This topic also makes up a fair amount of my hubs. Going through them, adding a few different thoughts, correcting mistakes and using good key words may help.

Astrology Hubs

Astrology is my main niche and I want to imrpove all of the hubs. I am pretty satisfied with the content. I did work pretty hard on the keywords, but perhaps some spelling and grammar might be improved. I will also change some of the titles. This is my main direction.

Promotion

I am going to promote all the hubs---but very slowly. I don't want to be known for over promoting my work. But many hubs t have promoted on facebook, twitter and stumbleupon are older, so if I make enough changes I may try this.

My Final Goals

I do want to increase views which in turn means more money. I am not satisfied with my performance and I am getting near the 1 year mark. I will never stop writing on this site due to several reasons which include this wonderful community and building a writing portfolio. I also want to become known as a well versed Astrologer and perhaps get some readings from my work. So I am still here, but feel I need to put my best foot forward, and I will keep you posted on what transpires during the month.

This is something I tell myself I'll do starting tomorrow...and tomorrow never comes. Now I have so many hubs that the job of re-visiting them all is overwhelming. I'll watch you do it and see how it turns out. :) Good suggestions, Carol, and good luck in your quest.

thanks Bill--It is a daunting task...and for you even more. Except you have some advantages--you know SEO and your work is almost flawless in grammar and spelling...I am always in ADHd or whatever..and I have to revisit the hubs often. I have done 12 so far... and I am going to keep the numbers down..There are a certain portion that need little work.. I just started your book...And I am already laughing.

I actually enjoy revising my old hubs. I tweak things here and there more often than I write new hubs. You might be surprised at how it improves your number of page views. And it's always encouraging to look back and see how far you've come in your writing abilities.

      Hi Carol

Great advice and as Billybuc said I keep meaning to do this. I've never really been a fan of Facebook thinking is more geared towards the young but perhaps I've never given it a fair chance.

I much prefer G+ and if you have your own site on Blogger and are active on G+, Google sends you visits and rewards all your activity.

Now that can't be a bad thing.

Either which way re editing hubs is certainly the first move to make after which if there is still no interest I'd move them to a blog or delete them.

Great job Carol. Voted up, ticked and shared.

      MJ.

Carol, I've been slowly tweaking some of my older hubs also. I just got notification from HP that I have 50 featured hubs now, which is a little over half of what I've written, so the tweaking idea will definitely improve things.

The recipe picture above looks delicious. What is is?

      Hi Carol,

I tweak my hubs regularly and it really does make a difference. I went back and reread what makes a "stellar" hub, etc., with the amount of photos, video, etc. I only have 73 hubs published, but they are all "Featured" hubs. I love reading your hubs on Life and Issues with Aging and Diet. Recipe hubs would seem to me to appeal to those who are really interested in looking for unique and easy recipes. Since Astrology does not appeal to me, I do not read those hubs, but if that is your niche, then I am sure you can keep coming up with different ideas for hubs on the subject, but it would seem to be a limited topic? Your profile score is high, so you must be doing something right. I share only on Pinterest, Google+ and Twitter, as I like to keep my Facebook private for family, etc. I believe spelling is a major issue and we should really make sure we have that down. I am always amazed at what I find when I go back an look at my hubs! I think it will be worth your while to take time out to follow the goals you have set for yourself. In the title of this hub (since we are on the subject), "Tweeking" is not spelled correctly . . . should be "Tweaking."

      Blessings, Faith Reaper

      Hi carol,

You are dead right and good on you! I know myself that with the AP commitments over the past 6 mths I too need to revisit early hubs that are not seeing traffic. I have some over my year ( 1 year on HP today) done and it all helps to improve your portfolio. Photo accreditation is important, something that was always a factor during AP to get right but you certainly seem to have all your bases covered my friend! Your work will reap the benefits of your time updating and tweaking here and there. Voted up, useful and interesting as we all can benefit from taking similar action!

I love your determination and dedication to HP and most importantly to yourself as a writer. "There's always room for improvement" is such an old cliche but oh, so true.

Like you, this is a project I'd like to do when our low season (in flying) starts. I also have quite a lot of drafts on HP that is yet to be published but still needing a lot of review, re-read and maybe re-write but guess, I'll focus on re-visiting my old hubs specially those needing attentions.

Thanks for the reminder and for the inspiration per se'. Good luck and happy hubbing!

      carol7777,

Tweaking and improving old hubs is absolutely necessary if you want to keep your page rankings high and get more views. I have been doing this to a lot of my old hubs and it has really helped. If you do a lot of sharing of other hubbers' hubs, it will also help with your views since these hubbers will be sharing your hubs. Voted up and sharing.

Hi Carol, this is so good to hear and good luck to you in your efforts, in around four months i wrote 40 hubs and now want to take a break from it, and just like you felt i should promote and tweak them. But the tomorrow never comes so far for me. Being a lazy girl perhaps!! But it would be so nice of you or any of the fellow hubbers to just let me know how much editing your old hubs improves your views and thus your earnings ? I would really be thankful.

I've been taking a look at my low scoring Hubs to see what I can do to improve them. I had a couple of poems that were DEAD, so I just deleted them; there was no hope. My recipes do pretty good. Whenever I made or cooked something I took photos all along.

Lots of good advice! I had about 6 hubs that was not earning. I forgot to make a url channel for those hubs. I was sure I did for each and every hub and I didn't. So my suggestion is after you tweak your hubs add your url to your adsense to be sure you have it in your account.

I also deleted and removed 30 of my hubs and put them on my blog. This months earnings went from $3 to over $50 here on hubpages. This is the best month ever!

I hope you update this hub eventually and let us know if your views increases. I have updated some but know others really need to be revised especially some of the earlier ones I wrote. Thanks for the reminder to take the time to revise older hubs or ones that just don't perform well. Voted up!

I have already revised over half of the hubs...and so far no change. However I think it will take some time. I am lengthening some of the shorter hubs when I can. I have also paid more attention to keywords..I have added many links as many of the early ones had no links. I have about 10 or more I am leaving as is..either they are producing or I cannot see improvements.. I will keep you posted and thanks for votes.

This is a great thing to do, and it's nice to hear about your ideas for improving some of your hubs. Good luck! I have improved upon a few of mine as I come up with new ideas, and I find the process fun. But I don't have a lot of hubs yet, and have only been on for a few months, so it is not overwhelming.

This is certainly a great idea. In fact, I'm just recently trying to get back into HubPages as I've been away a while pursuing other goals and utilizing more "free to write what you want" places. As such, I did go in this morning and began to delete some old drafts that were never finished, and some older hubs that really have been what I like to call "dead hubs" for some time.

The nature of the hubs I tend to write, or really I should say wrote, was centered around opinion and politics. Therefore many ofd them quickly become stale as time passes and the issue I was writing about becomes less relevant to current events. Maybe tweaking some of them, or tailoring some of the comments I made can be recycled in some way or another.

It is definitely worth taking a closer look at. As for your ideas here to imrpove your hubs, I think you are definitely on the right track.

Springboard: I think it is a good idea to write the best we can and keep improving with what we continually learn. I read other Hubs and have learned a lot from that. Thanks for commenting.

Hi Carol, It is always a good idea to revise old hubs. I do it on occasion. I am no expert on getting more views, but I can tell you from my experience, it takes time to see your hubs get more views. Tweaking is always good, but I have found hub writing is also like a fine wine. It takes time for the hubs to start achieving greatness. Do your best writing, always look for ways to improve, and be patient. I hope you will let us know how you do. Good luck

Carol, I go back and tweak older Hubs on occasion. But I have noticed Hubs that are in the cellar one day can move to the head of the class overnight. I guess each Hub has their time to shine! Good luck with the project! :)

      Hi Carol,

I have been doing the same for some time now which takes away from publishing new hubs, but I think it is worth it. As people discover and make comments on older hubs, if they have not yet been tackled...I address those prior to answering the comment. It certainly keeps me busy with well over 400 hubs! I am happy to report that my income seems to be rising since doing this. Also they do not seem to get idled quite as often. Hope your results will be the same.

Well Peggy..I am reaching my 1 year mark and I have gone over just about all the hubs except ones that I have done recently, those performing well and some I don't feel are worth the time...So far no results....I am sot sure how long it takes, but I certainly am not going to quit...thanks for stopping by with comments...Always good to see you.

I try to revisit one or two unfeatured hubs a week. I re-read them objectively and see if they need changes. I also double check keywords but I think more importantly after all of that is done I add pictures and video. I have had a few hubs go back to being featured. Some I know will never go back, they are the hubs about other hubbers or hub specific hubs.

      Good luck with your quest.

      Voted up and interesting.

Carol, it is like you read my mind. I need to go back and revisit hubs, clean them up, update... but as Bill says it can seem overwhelming. I am proud of you for doing this and hope your views do increase as a result, as that is your goal :) Vote up and sharing as I know people will find it interesting!

Well, with all the scrolling it took to get HERE, it seems your views for this hub are great! :) I too am going back through old hubs, adding photos and updating content, and trying to make it a much better experience for the viewer. I have been here for more than a year and have loved every moment of it. I miss it when I am not active. However, the reality is we would all like to make some money doing what we love most: writing! Here is to us all being able to update, edit, improve, and work with one another to increase our quality, writing, and views! I love reading your stuff, Carol and look forward to more!

Carol, I agree that our foundation must be the love of writing. Whether I make money or not, I will write. It is why I submit articles to magazines who don't pay, why I write a blog, and why I journal every day! But I would be lying if I said I didn't hope I earned some income while doing it to combine my need to work with my love for writing. Look forward to reading more from you.
