What Every New Hubber Should Know
Welcome to Hub Pages
I am not in any way an official greeter, but I have had a few close calls trying to save Hubbers from the I'm Leaving thread. In my short time I have gained a bit of experience and, while I am no expert at marketing, I can tell you where to find a lot of good information, and a lot of good friends.
So, welcome New Hubber, to a place that will hopefully be the happiest place on earth, as it is for me.
The first thing you should do is go over to the forum and check out the threads to the left. This is where you will find the answers to most of your technical questions and where you will find all of the how to's for setting up your adsense. If you are like me, it will only take three tries to get that one right (lol). You will definitely want to read the TOS (Terms of Service) If you don't you could get yourself in trouble real quick!
This from the forum page posted by Maddie Ruud is a comprehensive guide to help you with setting everything up.
Making Money on Hub Pages
One of the first questions everyone seems to have is to do with money. I had done my research before coming here and found it is usually two to three years before serious money can be made. Nelle Hoxie proved them all wrong. After only a year she was making a tidy sum each month. Here is the forum thread for Nelle's anniversary. In posts she tells us how she accomplished this amazing fete.
Another Hubber i would like you to meet is Patty Inglish MS. She has taken the time on more than one occasion to help me. Look at the layout of these two members Profile page.
You will notice that Nelle's is short and sweet, a first person account of herself, her likes and her dislikes. If you want to have a personal feel to your profile page, you can format it similarly. Patty's profile reads like a book jacket, in third person, If you are a professional writer with marketable skills, then her resume style profile might be right for you.
Your profile page can be changed and edited as often as you like. Be sure to read a few and figure out how you want to introduce yourself to your readers.
You can access your profile to make any changes by clicking on My Account, at the top of the page, and then in the new menu, select Your Profile under Your Account. On the left hand side you will see various choices such as your avatar, and on the right side you will see your BIO which is where you can write whatever you want the world to know about you.
An interesting side note here, in case you do not know, to make a link: Copy the URL you want to link, then highlight the words you want to serve as a short link. At the top of your capsule, or bio box, two new tools appear. A little chain link, and a broken chain link. Clicking on the chain link will bring up a box and you paste the URL. It is so easy! If you decide to unlink, just highlight and then click the broken chain link.
Now to Introduce you To the Community
Okay, here are some Hubbers with the social skills you need in order to enjoy your new life as a Hubber.
Zsuzsy Bee and her Hub-ctionary - a usage of HubPages hubbing words. Zsuzsy is our resident word usage pro as well as another excellent example to follow, if you want your hubs to be professional.
Mrvoodoo, and Forum Etiquet - A tale of how the forums can be fun one day and a dread experience the next, please read before sparring with the pro's. Mrvoodoo was an eclectic sort, do not let the name scare you away. He knew how to get rid of monsters under the bed, and how to sell rubber ducks and just about anything else you could imagine. He was full of surprises. Sadly, MrVoodoo was one of the hubbers who left in my absence.
MyWebs and How to Get More Followers, an extensive view of what to do to increase traffic and scores. I wish I had this information five weeks ago, when I started.
Okay, now you know how to talk, how to act, and how to find friends. The friends I have made here are too numerous to mention, I would be remiss if I left out the names of those who "took me in" Cosette, so patient as I tagged after her like a lost puppy. Habee, who answered my questions and is sooo funny! I have already mentioned Patty. Tom Cornett, and Earnestshub why they chose to like me, I do not know we are so different but they always make me laugh. Then there is Ohma, so peaceful in spirit, and Hokey, and Mega1. Figment and Stevennix2001, Sara Tonyn all you can count on, all the time! There are so many, it is suffice to say, you will not be sorry if you follow everyone I am following, or those who follow me. These are only the people I have interacted with the most, I am not playing favorites, but when you see them in the forums, introduce yourself, and for a good read, click on their name and any hub.
All of these great people and more, too many to mention, are here waiting for you to find them, here on HubPages.
How will they find you?
There are many good ways to make friends. One is to read other hubs. You can choose some of the people I have mentioned or you can go to these locations to find hubs to read.
This is the Hub Challenge Links thread: Here you will find links to thousands of hubs written on the 30 Hubs in 30 Days Challenge which is ongoing. You can start it any time, but many like to start on the first of a month, it is easier to keep track.
Another place to find hubs is here, in the Recommend another Hubber's Hub thread. If you go in, read a hub by the person who last posted, then copy the URL and paste in the thread. The next person reads one of yours and posts your URL.
Here is the thread Hubbers Help me Find a Hub For My Blog by Dale Mazurek, you will find excellent hubs selected by hubbers, the rule is you can give one of yours, but you must go out and find one by someone else too. Until you feel ready for this task, there are a lot of hubs there for you to read. Dale Mazurek uses his own blog to promote our hubs, and Hub Pages. Thanks Dale!
Finally a new feature here, The HubPages Hop! by Pauldeeds. This tool will have you hopping through the latest hubs! It is a great way to meet people.
Now make sure that when you read you post comments even if it is just a simple Thanks for writing, or I like your style... Anything meaningful you felt about the hub.
Participating in forums, posting comments, writing Hubs and asking or answering questions is called your Hubtivity. Hubtivity is what increases your hub score, as well as writing quality hubs, and getting page views. I think that's enough for your first day, so I say again:
Welcome To HubPages. You are going to like it here!
