What Every New Hubber Should Know, Part Two

Updated on November 25, 2010

Free Marketing, an Education on HubPages.

Okay, if you read my first hub about HubPages, then you have hopefully written your first Hub, and gone out and made some friends. If you came in forwards, having already set up a web site, and came here to market that, this Hub may not help you. I am writing this for those who, like me, are lost in the maze that is the Internet.

I am 48 years old, and spent the last several years working construction. I wish I had found Hub Pages sooner, as I may not have been the least bit worried about the fluctuations in the construction trade that lead to my lay off.

I would have already had a sizable income from here. Here I am, coming in through the back door, knowing absolutely nothing about marketing. Starting at the place where I could market my web site, with no idea how to build one. Owning three Domain names, with no web site to attach them to.

If you are in a similar predicament, this Hub is for you.

There is a multitude of free Marketing information here in Hub Pages. All one needs to do is type in the search box at the top of the page, to find Hubs on any subject. When I came here I started writing what I thought was unique content, only to find that here, in this world, there is not anything new under the sun. That said, how does one find their Niche Market. How does one become better at their niche than anyone else? How might one gain traffic, when there is so much competition?

In my research I have found that many sources actually don't provide anything more than a series of useless links. What good is all of the information, if the links take you to a completely unrelated page.

For instance. I am going to do a hub on the friends you make in your life, I am doing research to find a particular quote. I put in Google search "Quotes on Friendship" I find a page and enter a few words from the quote. This turns up another page, at the top is a quote that begins with "A friend" that is a link. I am looking for friendship quotes so I click the link... It takes me to a web site for mail order brides? Did I click "A Bride"?

That being said, make sure the links you put in your Hubs will take people where they want to go. Do not link the words "a friend" to a site for mail order brides. In all likelihood, your links should be to benefit you and your "home team" .

The Home Team

Hubbers who have gone above and beyond the call of duty to help us, educate us, agonize with us, and yes, even fight with us, for our own good.

Do not feel slighted if you end up fleeing the forums in tears. This happens to all of us, sooner or later. I am sure it has happened in other places in your life. Here, it is an opportunity to write. I fled the forums and produced Five hubs in two days. Nothing like misery to give you something to write about or something to prove.

You will find that emotion and passion are your best allies in writing, not so much good for the forum. If you are passionate, or emotional, use it wisely, here in the creation stage of your hub. Forums are for fun, not spouting your wisdom to the poor huddled masses, because you are the only one who really knows what's wrong with the world.

Root for the Home Team, don't try to tear it apart. And don't let it tear you apart (unless you can only write when you are torn apart, then go for it.)

Cagsil, he will fight with you, but he is always on the side of the Home Team. His Business is making people happy. Do not cross him. It is not pretty. He can be your best friend if you let him. He is smart, and strong. He knows his way around Hub Pages, and he will let you know if you are being contradictory to the Home Team, and their rules.

Skyfire, an individual who can take you through the wild world of marketing. Only a month older than me in Hub Time, but so well versed in technology. You need this friend. Don't argue, just do.

Jstankevicz. A four year veteran, a man to follow and be followed by, an original. Clicking on that link will take you directly to his hub on marketing yourself. At the bottom it is linked to other helpful hubs, such as building your web site. Just in case, you, like me, don't have one yet.

Mark Knowles, do not fight with this man. You may want to, just trust me. You are a flea. He is the dog. He will flick you off of his ear, and you will be lying in the grass wondering where your next meal is coming from. He is a professional blogger and if you follow what he does you will succeed. he does not need you, but you need him. Follow quietly, his bite is worse than his bark.

Welcome To HubPages

If you are very new, you will find yourself here. The Latest Hubbers. Quick, you'll be off of this page in moments as others join the ranks.

It would take you hours to sift through the pages of hubbers and find yourself. You have probably started with a rank between 30 and 50. Don't worry, this rank is not a reflection of who you are, or how well you write. Your score is a reflection of what you bring to the community. Writing a lot of hubs, getting a lot of traffic, or participating in the forums will raise your score.

Where you want to be is here. Best Hubbers, the top Ten on the first page of hubbers. There are many Hubbers with a rank of 100.

If you want to join these ranks, it is a challenge. You have a mountain to move. These are the best of the best. They go the extra mile, and always remember where they came from. These are not the hubbers to beat, they are the team you have joined. Live up to their example. Show them you care about what you are doing, just as they do.

This brings us to the Hub Pages Elite. These are truly the best people, and possibly some of the first people you will meet. Aside from their day to day lives, and their hubbing, these are the people who will nurture you if you listen, and follow, and let them be your guide.

The Hub Pages Elite are an amazing cross section of the Hub Pages site, they will pick you up out of obscurity, and make you a Hubnugget wannabe. They will challenge you to research a topic, or inspire you to go that extra mile with their challenges. They will greet you when you are new, and answer your questions. The best part is, you can volunteer after you get your feet wet, and help others too.

Others Who Will Help along life's HubWay

There are many who will help you navigate life's HubWay. Some you will find because of the links i have provided in these two Hubs. Others you will find on your own. Amazingly some of them will find you and take you under their wing. They will promote you every chance they get by rating you up at the bottom of your hub, by clicking the share button, and either E-mail Stumbleupon, Digg or Tweet your hub to others. You will rarely know that this has happened unless they tell you. Some will comment some will even contact you by E-mail via HubPages.

Do not ignore these secret helpers. They are unsung heroes, they do not have to tell you of your mis-spellings. They do not have to tell you how to format your hub and make it more attractive. They don't have to suggest photos, to give your profile page a better look. The don't have to tell you a lot of things, but they do. These kindnesses should not be ignored, nor should they be looked upon as anything else but the kindness with which they went out of their way, to help you become a better Hubber.

About that quote, I found it. James Boswell:

“We cannot tell the precise moment when friendship is formed. As in filling a vessel drop by drop, there is at last a drop which makes it run over. So in a series of kindnesses there is, at last, one which makes the heart run over.”

Dedicated to

All of those who have guided me, chided me, laughed at me, and laughed with me. I am becoming a better Hubber every day, and it is because of you.

I love HubPages, and every one of you other Hubbers.

Additional Reading:

From Sunforged, Does Hubpages Pay? While a little more technical than I can understand, I am not you. This might be a real help. I have to read it again, myself, as I am really not the sharpest tack in the box.

Helping Mothers and Others

If you would like to earn tangible residual income each month within a year, please contact me. You will be making a commitment to help others.

If you need help with anything from coping to writing please feel free to contact me as well. I do not charge for my knowledge. Just tired of seeing everyone taking advantage of others. Contact me (Faybe Bay) via HubPages through the link at the above right.

Have a great Day, thanks for reading, and if you like my writing please help me by rating me up, and sharing my page by clicking below.

Thank you Epigramman, it is always a good day when I wake up to your comments! I hope you have a great weekend, I have homework and school Tuesday, so I won't be around as much, until Wednesday.

what every new hubber should know: that it pays to have friends like so I can listen and learn and become a better person/writer.

They say you are only as good as the company you keep - well then you are very very good company. Lucky me!

Again, if you figure out what something means or how it works, I will be eternally grateful! I know where to find but not so much how to apply what I learn! LOL. Thanks Rafini!

Beautiful hub, you have an understanding of hubberland that I can only hope to obtain. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you! I was in the dumps. Boost for my confidence actually as researching 6 hours now turns up nothing for the hub I wanted to write today. That's not true, someone is writing every four hours on what I was going to write today! Lol. I feel better Dpfitzell. Maybe reading a bit again will help a new idea form.

Thanks! I thought it makes it easier, I had to find all this stuff and there is so much more to find! This way it's a short cut. I thought it was important for them to find you guys right away, instead of late like me.

Thank you Pamela! Yes, I have just barely saved a few from leaving while others I lost. I would not leave if they tried to drag me away. I love it here.

That's what it's all about, remember how terrified I was, when you took me under your wing. Seems so long ago, but it's just been a couple of weeks. :)

lol. well hopefully he listened to you then. lol. that kind of reminds me of how Beth100 saved me once when I got into a conflict with one of the featured hubbers on here. I didn't know anyone in forums at the time, even though I had an account here for like 2 to 3 months, but never participated in forums. However, she was the first person to take me under their wing. :)

No Kidding. Here I go charging into the forum to save this kid from "dun dun dun Certain Death!" I was like "get outta here I sent you e-mail."

    • Stevennix2001 profile image

      Steven Escareno 8 years ago

Oh okay. Sorry, about that. I misread what you were saying. lol. yeah, you are right about that then. sometimes it's better to more humble when your first starting off. At least, that's whats worked for me thus far.

    • Faybe Bay profile image

Faye Constantino 8 years ago from Florida

@ Shazwellyn, Thank you, I think that's why everyone kept telling me "yeah you should"

@ Stevennix, I am not saying to kiss up, just some newbies go in and get in these guys faces. I saw one boasting about how many hubs they put up in one day, on the first day!

It's all good with them though, I just wanted new people to know, these guys could really help you. Get to know people before you try to top them at their own game.

    • Stevennix2001 profile image

Very informative. Although I don't agree about kissing up to certain hubbers you mentioned, as i've never been one to kiss up to anyone. lol. which is probably why all my supervisors never liked me, as I only follow people I respect. lol. anyway, this is a great and informative hub. you did a great job faybe.

This fills in the gap where other hubber's haven't reached! You have not forgotten what it is to be new and so you can create a hub targeting the newbie in the way the newbie can understand. Very good - keep up the good work! x

Ohma, it was shear providence. I had no way to make all of those links, I was so tired and my eyes could barely see, and here you had already done it. I was just slipping in to boost you in the recommend another Hubber forum, and there it was. Thank you!
