What are backlinks and how to get them.

Updated on August 18, 2012

Simplest way to explain backlinks is, that it’s a link from someplace on an internet page that leads to your page or hub. The good news is that they are easy to create and only take about a minute or so. The bad news is to compete with the top sites you will need thousands of them. On average, most of the top sites have somewhere around fifty thousand backlinks. If you want your hubs to do well and get higher page ranking, you are going to have to create lots and lots of backlinks. It’s a lot of work but if you look at the numbers, it very well worth it. For example Google receives over three thousand search requests a second or over one hundred and eighty thousand a minute. So who doesn’t want their fair share of that? With those three thousand requests a second, the more competitive the key words are, the more backlinks it will take to be at the top. Try to add as many as you can every month for as long as you have your hubs because just like with any business, if you don’t do it, your competitors will. And of course as with everything in life, there are shortcuts. I am sure you will see sites that will offer to sell you hundreds of backlinks for a price. But you have to realize that the quality of the backlinks is what really counts. The sites that link to you or you link to, don’t have similar topics to your hubs, then the search engine may disregard them. If the site is known for spam or adult material then it’s possible that Google would even bump you just by association. Here are four tips to help you get started creating your own backlinks:

1.Writing free articles. You can write a few quality of articles and publish them into article directories. Then each one that uses your article would be linking back to your hubs. The good thing about this is that other sites may pick up on your free articles, creating more free links. You can do this by writing one or two articles a month. The bad part is that of course there will be those sites that will use your article but won’t create a backlink to your hub. We all know that videos get great rankings in search engines. So instead of writing your articles, you could create a video of them and list it on various sites like YouTube, Metacafe, Viddler and numerous others. You can assign your hub to the video because we have all seen the videos on YouTube that get million hits. Again with this one, you should try to do one or two a month at least.

3.Facebook. Facebook is one of the most visited sites on the internet. So of course anything that is associated with it shows that its very popular. This is one of the easiest ways of getting backlinks. If you don’t already have an account, open one up. Connect with groups and people with similar interests and make comments that include a link to your hub.

4.Message boards, forums and hub pages themselves. There are countless forums and message boards on the internet with countless registered users. Join some of these and comment on on-topic posts or create your own and have your hub link in your signature. Everybody on HubPages has the ability to link to other hubs and since every hubber is considered a unique domain, swapping links to other hubbers is a great and fast way to not only grow your backlinks but help the HubPages community grow their backlinks too.

Using these tips is a great way to build a lot of backlinks in a short amount of time but remember to always follow the rules of HubPages and the site in which you are creating your backlinks and please, always remember not to spam.

I found the best method of getting backlinks from social media like Facebook is for one to first establish himself on the site and getting followers, that way you will get long lasting backlinks that can drive worthy traffic. Great article and voted up.
