Why I Chose Hubpages Over Other Online Options

Updated on January 30, 2012

There are many options out there to make money. However there are not as many options packed into one place like Hubpages, at some other websites. One thing that stood out to me for Hubpages was the fact they run it like a business. When working for a business you fill out the W-9 tax form. There are also options to work with large companies like Ebay, Amazon and Google to increase your cash flow.

Experiences with Fanbox

I am currently a college student, and with my schedule it is hard to keep a job, as my schedule changes every 1.5 months. So about a year ago, I had tried working with Fanbox. They had an interesting approach to the internet and making money. Their plan was they could make money off the people investing money in other people writing content. I tried them out for about a month. Within that amount of time I earned over $50. Within the first week I earned $25. It seemed too easy to get a hold of the money. I wasn't writing good quality guides, like I do here on Hubpages.

They did not have any partnerships with any of the big companies as they made their money off of their own revenue system. I did some searching on the forums they had, looking for some answers to the questions I had at the time. I ran across a lot of comments saying they had earned $3,000 more or less, and they were not getting paid. They said it had been 3-4 months since they requested the money and they had still not received a dime at the time.

After that point I went to Google and searched more information on FanBox and found they had some issues with paying their employees. I ended up leaving for that reason.

Good Features:

  • Really easy to make money
  • Really easy to get clicks on your content
  • Doesn't take money to start

Bad Features:

  • Didn't pay when requested
  • Doesn't do taxes
  • Hard to figure out their website
  • You have to do the taxes on the amount you earn

Experiences with Surveys

I have tried many different things, I have even worked for ChaCha. I am always out on hunt for finding the right job on the internet. The next thing I have tried is making money with taking surveys. At the time I thought this was a great Idea. Taking surveys is an easy task, all you have to do is click on a button and easy money! Well that isn't really the case. There are a ton of sites out there that offer this service. Because companies want to know what people think of their products. If they get this type of knowledge, it can increase their sales.

The problem with this kind of method, it spams your inbox. In order to have enough money coming in you must have your name signed up under several different companies. Each one of those companies will send an email every time they have a survey ready to take. If you don't keep up on them they become overwhelming very fast. Another problem with them were, only the 30 minute surveys were really worth anything. Even at that you would only make 5-10 cents, as opposed to the 1 cent surveys.

Good Features:

  • There are always surveys to be filled.
  • They don't take a whole lot of time (if filling out the 1-5 minute surveys)
  • They don't have to be filled out right when they are received. They can be filled out at a later time.

Bad Features:

  • If neglected, they overwhelm your inbox.
  • They aren't really worth it unless you fill out the longer worded surveys.
  • Most surveys didn't apply to me as they would be gender specific or needed me to have already used a products

Game Tester For EA

In the past year I have also had the opportunity to be a game tester for EA. What this means is they send me an email telling me they have a game that is ready to be tested before they release it to the public. They normally ask people to find any bugs or things that make the game hard. This was probably the most fun job I had, as I could play a game and basically get paid for it. They don't really pay in cash but they do pay in video games.

Good Features:

  • Easy to do
  • Easy to fit into an evening schedule

Bad Features:

  • Doesn't happen all the time, inconsistent
  • I had to travel to their facility, which really ended up costing me in gas money.

Hubpages is the only place where I feel confident that I can earn some money. It isn't going to be easy, but it isn't going to be too hard either. There is no need for a deposit of money, you can just start right off and earn money. After already starting, I can see there is a potential of earning a good amount, but it will take some time. I am also trying to take this advantage and try to improve my writing skills. English is one of my weak spots, so finding Hubpages and trying to find new topics to write about, is a great way to get my mind thinking.

Good Features:

  • Doesn't take any money to get started
  • Easy to use
  • Tax information is done for you
  • Google can find your content easily

Bad Features:

  • The content layout is a bit buggy.

Some things I want to try

There are a few jobs that I want to try. The reason why I haven't yet is either due to money or I have yet to find out how to get started with such a job.

I want to learn how to buy and resell things on Ebay / Amazon. The problem with this is I need to know the market and it costs money to get into the market. I used to play a game called Runescape. It had something like what I wanted to do in life. After getting so much money, I could start earning money off their "stock market". I ended up doubling my money on the game before I quit. I did learn how the market worked, and I believe the same could be applied in the real world. There is always stuff in demand of being purchased. There is always stuff that gets hyped before being released. I think it is a fun hobby to do, but like I said, you need money.

I want to be one of those people who test and review products for companies. I know there has to be a way of making money by reviewing products when companies send you their stuff. I have not been able to find any sites on how to do such a thing. It interests me, because I heard you make a decent amount of money from it. With me being a college student and my schedule changing all the time, it would be perfect to do. But as I have stated before, I don't know where to find this information.

Final Comments

I hope this was an interesting article. I felt like writing about my past experiences on what I have tried. I believe in sharing information freely as that is what makes the world progress. I believe that is why the internet is such a great place.

If you have any tips or tricks or even some sites that I could check out on the ideas that I have suggested above, please let me know! I would really like to check them out.

Remember to share and up-vote, thanks for reading!

Wholesale drop shipping I have never thought about. It sounds interesting. I may have to look into that. Thanks for the suggestion!

Most interesting hub, and true from my experience as well in most areas.

In regards to your new ideas you mention eBay and Amazon. I sell on both with no overhead capital or inventory. What I have is a Sales License which allows me to work with wholesale drop shippers. It works well. I have yet to get rich, but every once in a while it is good to get a payment email, go to your wholesaler's site, fill in the order info and let them package and ship the merchandise.

Hubpages is working well for me. I have been here almost a month now, I think, and have made some decent money from the ads and such. Again, not a get rich thing, but it is nice to see the cash build knowing that one day you will receive a payment when least expected.

I know you can earn air miles for consumer surveys. I did it for a little while but ended up finding them a bit too time consuming. Your hub was interesting to read. Thanks for sharing.
