Why I'm Done With HubPages
I'm publishing this hub to notify those who are currently following me that I've decided to stop creating new material for HubPages, for a number of reasons.
I've long been discouraged by HubPages' policy regarding trolls who can far too easily get a hub un-published with a mere complaint. Though I briefly considered leaving when I began receiving such attacks, I ultimately decided to grit my teeth and do what I can to simply ban the offending parties from my hubs. In the end, it wasn't enough to make me give up on this website.
Another problem I've always had is the format of the question and answer forums, where subsequent comments are allowed fewer and fewer characters. I've always tried to be succint in my hubs (trying to keep most of them at 1,000 words or less), but that's ridiculous. So, after an initial foray or two, I simply decided to stay away from that part of the website. No problem.
Now, Hubpages has dramatically altered the formatting of hubs themselves, removing the ability to split one's capsules into two separate columns, throwing a number of my hubs into disarray and into sudden violation of HubPages' formatting rules (this, after already reducing the allowed Amazon capsules to one a couple of years ago).
While this change is more a pain in the butt than a horrendous offense, I've decided, finally, that this is the last straw. A website truly interested in encouraging authors to publish should be giving them MORE options, not fewer. They should be facilitating their efforts, not hamstringing them.
So I've concluded that I'm better off looking for greener pastures somewhere else. And perhaps this is the trigger that will finally move me to dive into finishing the book I've always wanted to write. In any case, I'll leave my articles here for as long as HubPages allows -- or until I can find another place to publish them. But I won't publish anymore new material.
Thank you to all those who've chosen to follow me over the years. I wish you all the best!
