There Are Different Types of Bloggers with Different Intentions and Motivations

The first thing you must recognize is that HubPages is a huge online community and is very diverse. Not all Hubbers are interested in "being popular" or making friends. Others want to be the center of attention (no, not Me!)

When you understand that there are different people from all walks of life on HubPages, you will be able to see the big picture. Let's look at some of the different types of people that Publish on HubPages:

  • Single Moms and Dads
  • Auto Mechanics
  • Technical Writers
  • Fiction and Non Fiction Writers
  • Novelists
  • Bloggers
  • Photographers
  • Freelance Writers
  • People Who Use English as a Second Language
  • Artists
  • Musicians
  • Programmers
  • Religious and Non Religious
  • Arts and Crafters
  • Motorcycle and Automobile Enthusiasts
  • Cooks
  • Web Designers
  • College Students

So What Are the Secrets?

OK, I get it! There are many different types of people who join HubPages and each one of them has their own motivations and reasons for writing and publishing on the site.

What makes the people who get the attention, Get The Attention?

Let's explore some of the Secrets of their Success:

Creating Evergreen Content Will Bring Readers Over Time, Not Overnight...

Secret #1: Quality Content In Your Hubs: Don't Settle For Less!

You will notice that the "In-Crowd" on HubPages all have one thing in common: Quality Content!

How is "Quality Content" defined?

There are certain elements that are present to create and distribute quality content. No matter how pretty your Profile Photo is or how catchy your Hubber Name and Profile are, that alone will not maintain readership. Great Content Gets Readership!

Here are Some of the Elements of Great Content:

  • Evergreen Content is content that is not limited to a period of time. Evergreen content is content that will be searched and enjoyed for many years and never goes out of style. Examples of Evergreen Content are Recipes, Holiday Hubs (even though they occur for a short time of the year, traffic will increase around the time of the holiday, so they are "Evergreen"), "How-To" Hubs on topics that people search for year round. Anything that is interesting and is searched anytime of the year can be considered Evergreen.
  • Article Length is important. Most Hubs should be at least 500 words. Hubs that have 1500+ words have the added bonus of getting better search results in search engines than shorter articles on the same subject.
  • Article Presentation and Looks are probably the most important aspects to getting people to read your Hubs. Messy, unorganized Hubs with spelling errors and grammar problems will present the author as lazy and incompetent. One of the best things that you can do to improve the look of your article is to Break Up Text into Several Text Capsules. This makes the article look "clean" and easy to read and not a long boring paragraph. Another benefit to breaking up your text is that you can add Photos, Videos, and Ads to the different text boxes. This also makes the article look neater and allows for a more effective presentation.

Secret #2: Original Photos and Video Add To Your Quality of Content!

Do you take your Own Photos and Add them to your Hub Articles?

If not, you're missing out! Adding High Quality Original Photos has many benefits. Here are just a few:

  • Original Photos Draw Attention to your Hubs!
  • Original Photos are Unique!
  • People are Drawn to Great Photos!
  • Adding Original Photos will Increase Hub Score and will add to the Quality of your Hub Content.
  • Search Engines Love Original Photos and High Quality Content!
  • You Can Show Others "How to Do" Something in a Visual Form.

There are many other benefits to adding your own original photos to your Hubs. As you add your original pictures in relation to your Hub Content, you will see the benefits of your efforts.

Here Are a Few Tips for Those Who Are Not "Professional" Photographers:

  • Buy A Decent Digital Camera Within Your Budget.
  • Buying Digital is a Must for people who want to Publish Quality Photos Online, Quick and Easy!
  • Do your Research Before You Buy!
  • Once You Buy a Camera, Read the User's Manual and Read It Until You Understand the Functions of the Camera!
  • Practice Taking Photos Before You Publish them!
  • Many Environmental Variables can influence the Quality of a Photo, particularly, Light.
  • Bring Your Camera With You Everywhere!
  • You Never Know When or Where the Perfect Photo Opportunity Will Arise!

Using Original Photos will help you get More Traffic to your Blogs!

Quality Original Video

HubPages has now introduced a Brand New Video Feature site-wide! This is going to change the Future of Online Publishing forever!

HubPages will now be able to compete on the Online Video Market but we have an advantage: We can add Hub Content to our videos while other sites can't!

We can promote our videos with all the other features that Hubs already have:

  • Text Capsules that can explain what the video is about
  • Photos that support the Video Hub
  • HubPages Earnings Program Ads
  • You will still be able to add Charts and Tables, Quizzes and Polls
  • Additional Earning Potential on the Video Itself!

The benefits to creating Video Hubs are obvious and it will be interesting to see how well this program does competing with other sites over time. If you don't want to publish your own Video Hubs, there is still a Video Option available!

Adding Videos to your Hubs can be done without the Hub itself being considered a Video Hub. You can add videos to your Hubs as you write them or you can even go back to your older Hubs and Add Video to them which will make them more content valuable. Anyone who is serious about getting readers should consider adding video appeal to their Hubs!

Secret #3: Reading and Commenting On Other Hubbers' Hubs

Not all of the "Attention Getters" on Hub Pages read or comment on other's Hub Articles. In fact, I have seen a few successful Hubbers that make a lot of money on HubPages, yet they don't even have a Level I Commenter Accolade.

Something else I have noticed, is that Most of the successful people on HubPages do tend to comment on other's Hubs. Leaving interesting and insightful comments on other people's Hubs is a great way to form relationships where both sides benefit.

Leaving comments that thank the author or praise them for their work validates them as an author. You can share with them what you learned or liked from their article, make some suggestions, or even appropriately debate a different point of view.

Commenting on other Hubbers' Hubs is one of the quickest ways to get readership and comments to your own Hubs and adds value to the HubPages Community as a whole

Secret #4: Creating and Sharing On Social Networks

Simply put, the more you get out there, the more activity you will receive. Sharing on the Internet is like Karma; You Get back what you Put In; What Goes Around, Comes Around! If you create Social Networks selectively, you have a chance of creating a wealth of resources that will enjoy reading and sharing your work.

Here are some Tips for Social Networking:

  • Follow Selectively: Don't follow just to get followers. This applies to HubPages and any other Social Media Sharing Sites.
  • Join Twitter, Facebook and other Popular Social Network Sites: This is where the Readers are! There are many sites that allow you to share your content and content you enjoyed reading from other authors. If you are not on Social Media as a Writer then you are Missing a Big Piece of the Traffic Pie!
  • Never Spam your followers or friends (or anyone for that matter!) Constantly updating your status or repetitive and redundant sharing makes you look bad and desperate!
  • Don't Become Obsessed with Social Media Sites or your time for writing Quality Material will vanish! Set a time aside from working where you will want to explore what your friends are up to. Then you can re-share what they shared as you want.
  • Share From The Source. Once you read and comment on a Hub, that is the best time to share it. You may otherwise forget or go crazy trying to find the right link.

Does Sharing Really Work?

Secret #5: Respond to Comments on Your Hubs!

You don't have to respond to comments on your Hubs. In fact, you can even shut comments off if you want to. But why would you want to do that! When a person leaves a comment on one of your Hubs they are generally looking to do one of the following:

  • Comment on your Hard Work and Effort
  • Agreeing or Disagreeing with a Point you have made
  • Spamming you (which can be deleted!)
  • Acknowledging that they Read your article
  • Trying to Build Online Friendships and Relationships with other Like-Minded Authors to Create a Network of Sharing

I suppose that there can be other reasons for leaving a comment, but I have found these few to be the most common.

Answering Comments Left by Others On Your Hubs Can Be Very Rewarding:

  • It shows the reader that you appreciate them stopping by your Hubs
  • It shows that you Value Their Opinions and for taking the time to comment
  • It adds a "Human" Element to your articles
  • Creates Relationships for Future Readership. Many Hubbers will not go back to a Hubber's Hubs if they don't respond to their comments.
  • Generates More Followers
  • Adds Additional Content to Your Article
  • Shows Future Readers how much your Hub is Valued by others in the Community

If you are on HubPages just to write and try to make some money then don't worry about leaving comments. If you Joined HubPages for the Whole HubPages Experience, then participating in the Community through Comments is a Must!

@WokandRoll: Hello there! You're welcome. Evergreen Content is King. You are absolutely right. No matter where you write, Evergreen will keep people coming back and will attract new readers over time. This Hub is a testimony to that! Thank you for your insightful comment!

@epbooks: Original photos on Hubs will definitely help your ranking with the search engines as they are always looking for new content. Stock photos are legal (copyright) but often times they show up in various publications so they loose their originality. My rule is that I only use a stock image when I can't make my point or get a better photo.

Evergreen is the only way to build a lasting relationship with search engines. Writing short-term "newsy" articles may get a lot of up-front content but will not do well over time. That's what History Books are for!

Thinking 10 years ahead when writing an article is awesome. You can always come back and update as necessary. Thank you for your insightful comment and for your vote!

Thanks for all of the sound advice. I think it's important to realize the value of evergreen content. I haven't been on HubPages long, but having written freelance prior to joining the site, evergreen content is the stuff people want. If you can supply something timeless, you're golden. Everybody leaves happy.

I love this hub- great information. I try to incorporate original photos most of the time, however, I've used some from stock photos. Good to know to use original. The evergreen piece of advice is a good one. As I'm writing I try to think ten years ahead to see if most of the information in my hubs will still be somewhat relevant. Voted up!

@blacklion2277: Thank you for your awesome comment! There are no set number of Hubs to publish weekly. Of course I would suggest publishing at least one a day but it is not only the number of Hubs published but more about the quality of each Hub.

You should do your research before writing a Hub because if something you want to write about is already covered extensively online you probably won't see much traffic.

I suggest checking out the Learning Center (http://hubpages.com/learningcenter/contents) and check out the articles that discuss Choosing a Title, Using the Keyword Tool, etc. There is so much information out there that I suggest you take your time and do your research. Glad this helps and I am glad you are having fun!

@Suhail and my dog: Hi! As for your question, "Does putting more hubs make a difference?", I am not sure I know what you are asking. Can you please clarify for me? I assume you mean does writing/publishing more Hubs make a difference. If that is the case, there is no definite answer.

Some people leave a lot of comments on other people's Hubs but don't write their own. I have also seen people who are active in the forums that have a lot of followers but they don't write Hubs. There is nothing wrong with not writing Hubs but enjoying reading the other Hubbers' writings. If traffic and followers is your goal then you may want to write some Hubs! Hope this helps!

@JayeWisdom: Hello! I am happy that you liked this. If you are looking for similar articles about HubPages and blogging be sure to stop by my profile and look for my "how to" articles! I have been on fire since I attended a HubCamp in Boston, MA a couple years ago. I try to do the research so others don't have to!

Using your own high quality photos can really give your articles a boost. Sometimes I add photos that have nothing to do with the content of the article. It just dresses up the article and gives it some visual life! Keep your camera with you at all times! This is easier now because of high resolution cell phone cameras. You really never know what you will see and you can capture it if you are camera-ready. Thanks for your comment and votes. I also appreciate your share! Thanks for stopping by!

You really got it right when you said, "It isn't about a popularity contest but it is about making friends and showing respect to your followers and friends." That is so true!

I truly appreciate your comment and votes! Thank you so much!

@Lesleysherwood: Hello there! Like you, I am also limited for time. There always seems to be something that we have to do! Writing Evergreen Hubs is one of the most influential factors to site traffic. If you are in the market for a decent and inexpensive camera check out my review on a Canon Powershot (the photos in this Hub were taken on one!) http://hub.me/acsp8

You know the phrase "don't put all your eggs in one basket..." well, that's good advice! Besides writing on HubPages I have a day job, I maintain a blog and I also write articles and blogs for customers (freelance). The more you are out there the more success potential you have! Glad this was useful to you! Thanks for the comment and share.

      Good tips in this hub!

      I have a quick question.

Does putting more hubs make a difference?

Just to let you know, I like reading more than writing. I won't write until and unless there is a compelling reason for me to do so lol.

J.S. -- Thanks for sharing this broad scope of information from your own experiences on HP. With more than 1800 followers, you are doubtless doing something (or many things) right! I look forward to reading more of your informative hubs.

My own hubs are a mixture of factual articles, essays and creative writing, though I recently un-published 22 of my short fiction hubs. I now have only a few fiction hubs and intend to publish more non-fiction (informational) hubs in future.

Although I've used a few of my original photos to illustrate some hubs, I haven't made a routine practice of doing it. Now, I will take your advice and keep my camera close at hand to watch for "photo ops." I also need to learn to take better photographs.

This hub is a treasure for new hubbers. It should be in a HubPage Manual!

Voted up, useful, awesome, interesting, and shared. P.S. Loved your photos and drawing, you don't just talk the talk you walk the walk!!

This is such a motivating hub. I suffer with lack of time, so I'm always wanting to put into practice all the things you have advised here. I need to write 'evergreen' hubs and I need to buy a camera! I'm trying to be an Avon Rep at the same time. I would rather earn my money right here online, but unfortunately, the Avon is the thing that is paying the rent, so to speak. But I am definitely keeping this hub stored in my bookmarks, if I thought you were going to unpublish I would wish I'd copied and pasted so I could constantly remind myself of priorities in this short life of ours. Thank you and I will share!!!!

This is just common sense for writers on any platform. If you can add pictures add them. Your original photography is always best. Videos which relate, add them. Share the work of others, do it. It is funny how sharing builds your reputation as someone who cares.

Before long you will see your followers increase. When followers increase so will search engine results. Of course voted up, interesting, and sharing in one of my Facebook groups and one other group which has 11,000 members in it.

A really excellent hub jam packed with all sorts of relevant, useful and practical advice.

This Hub has even proven to be useful to someone like me who has been on Hubpages for over three years.

It has been an interesting and enjoyable Hub to read, well written, easy to follow and I think it should be part of a Hubpages welcome packet to newbies.

I will of course be voting this hub up and hitting all the relevant buttons on my way out :D

@prairieprincess: Hi! I agree about the original photos. I was lucky to get a great camera for my birthday last year (thanks Mom and Dad!) and it really made a difference having original and good photos on Hubs. If you are interested, I wrote a review about my camera, the Canon Powershot A2200 HD: http://hub.me/acsp8.

Since I started publishing Hubs using images from this camera, I have a lot more traffic from search engines. Check out the camera. It's not that expensive, it's a point and shoot and it is very light weight. Thanks for stopping by. I appreciate your comment and votes!

@barbergirl28: Thanks! Sorry for the delayed response but I have been so very busy lately with work and just too darned tired to do anything else. Just got in from a 10 hour shift...anyway...

To be honest, when I first started on HubPages 3 years ago I had just been laid off from a job I liked and I was trying to find a place to earn money writing online. I came across HubPages somehow (I forget!) and the funny thing is that I didn't make any money the first year and a half and I almost gave up. After a long hiatus I decided to start learning how to make money and how this whole thing works. I have never looked back since!

Right now I have 2 jobs working 7 days per week so I haven't had as much time to write more and I hate it. In the Fall I will get laid off from my weekend job (golf course) so I plan on making this year a productive one in terms of learning and publishing. My dream is to do this full time someday and not have to work for someone else! I appreciate your comment and here's to the future on HubPages!

I'm not a hub subscriber but I do read these from time to time and I can't help but notice. The guy who signs his articles as Tony's Stories, what happened to him? I believe he has one article that holds the record for most comments; "The 40-year old virgin." The posted comments are hilarious and get even more ludicrous towards the bottom of the page. Although beware some commenters are way off topic.

Hello peterelmhirst! Google is what you want to focus on because we make money when people search for content on search engines, find our articles and click on our ads. HubPages prefers longer content in general because we are more likely to get higher search engine rankings if we have more and better content than other pages on the same subject.

Having at least 500+ words will probably help your individual Hub score a little but it is based on the content itself and not the amount of content. Remember that Hub and Hubber scores are not related to earnings directly. I hope this explains it for you! Thanks for stopping by!

Hello SeekingMJ, and Welcome to HubPages! I am glad that you stopped by and commented! There is a lot of information on HubPages and I agree that it can be overwhelming.

I didn't really "get it" until I was on the site for over a year. That is when I started getting motivated to learn and do more on the site.

HubCamp Boston was a real learning experience for me and I got to meet some other Hubbers as well as Simone Smith and Robin Edmondson, two of HubPages' awesome staff members! That lit my fire, so to speak!

Now I want to share what I have learned so other's can get a fast-track jump start on HubPages! I still learn every day and HubPages is always changing for the better. This really is the best community online!

My advice to anyone starting off on HubPages is to take your time and don't get overwhelmed. We all go at our own pace and we should focus on Quality over Quantity.

I wish you the best of success on HubPages and I appreciate your comment very much! Thank you!

      JSMatthew~
