Why we write! Writing tips about how to continue to write!
What is the motivation to write? No matter how I try I can’t put words on why. And when I try it makes no sense…..
Everyone who has tried to write on Internet knows that it takes both time and effort. Most of us need some motivation to put so many hours in a project. Even though it is a "need", we still must produce something over and over again .....
What is the motivation to write? And how do we maintain that motivation? There are probably as many reasons as there are people and I can only write about why I write and my tips on how to keep up motivation in times when the ideas and the words seems to be more or less missing.
The motivation to write!
For me there are only one explanation but also several explanations. Because every time I try to define one explanation another explanation arise. And the second is a total contradiction to the first explanation! I will try and explain and I hope it make some sense!
Sometimes I think it is because I see things differently from others and I feel a strong urge to tell others. But at the same time I think that former thought I contradict myself and think: of course I write because I am social creature who needs my “pack” and want to communicate with people who see things the same way as I do. No one wants to be alone in Universe!
Other times I think I am totally magnificent and I am convinced that I can write about almost everything and also do it pretty good. It is like I have a headless hubris and I feel like I am the best! But at the same time I am very humble and feel happiness for other talented writers here. I am so impressed by the magnificent writing of others that I know are so superior compared to my own scribbling.
Now and then I try to be funny, but at the same time I want to be serious and create serious and well research articles. It is like I turn between intelligence and stupidity.
This might sound more like a total confusion but I believe that everyone who writes something, or creates something, goes in and out of these moments.
The only way I can think of will describe it is that the process of writing is like the physical definition of interference, where two totally different waves moves towards each other, meet somewhere in the middle and either makes even or reinforce each other.
Take for example the two contradictions hubris and humbleness; hubris comes from one direction and leaps forward. But from opposite direction comes humbleness with the same force. They meet in the middle and there they can either make even or increase each other to the double effect.
The times when I write something good is the times when I somehow catch the exact moments where reinforcement occurs in my position as a guard in the middle.
The times when I can´t write anything at all, or when everything I write looks and seems totally unnecessary and a waste with everybody's time, is when there is no reinforcement. All the words ends up like nothing no matter how much I write. Nothing happens and the words become a total waste of paper!
So, how do we come out of this downturn and the writer's block? How do we catch the moment when the waves reinforce one another and something great is created? And how do we increase those moments?
By writing, and writing more!
The more we write the better we get! Save your writing even if it looks bad for the moment. Some day you will continue that unfinished article and transform it to a masterpiece! You will be at your best and so will everything else!
By reading the work of others!
When we read the work of others we learn and also get inspiration. Maybe not at once, at least if you are in a real period of writers block, but eventually. Everything we read affects us and slowly a creative process starts in the background. Just give it time!
When everything you write looks and sounds like scribbling and nonsense that no one would be interested in, try and stay focused! It is so easy to start writing on several articles or hop between several articles, try one idea after the other until everything in your head is a total mess. You can work like this for a while but not for long, or your inspiration and motivation will be less. If you must write on several articles, decide which articles you will write on and alter between them, When you get stuck on one, turn to the other, and back again if you must. The important thing is to find a way to get out of this phase! Get focused!
Never mind the SEO, tags or keywords!
Most of us are here with the purpose of getting more readers and views. Or maybe we just want to have readers at Hubpages. Otherwise we could just write in a private notebook. And a great way to achieve more readers is to mind and use the keywords that are high ranked in search engines like Google. But when we are in a less creative period the search for good keywords doesn’t going to help at all. Instead it can be a cause for writers block or at least adding to the problem! Write something you know, and are passionate about instead and leave the search-friendly keywords for now. You can always come back and do it later.
By praising you!
When you can´t produce something that others can praise, you must be your own best audience! Praise your own work, praise your self for being you, for everything you do, no matter how tiny and unimportant it may appear to be, and do it repeatedly!
We need eight positive thoughts to compensate for a negative thought, so you better be good at praising yourself! Get your self a notebook and make sure you write down so many good things about your self every evening. You must boost your self-esteem! By writing it down you force your self to think positive thoughts about your self and your brain will be affected. I don’t know how, but it really works!
When we are out of flow we tend to be our worst critic! You cant rely on your own judgement to hundred percent when you are in a critical period so you must let others make the judgement. Test your writing on your friends or publish an article that you are not hundred percent satisfied with! There is a good chance that you will get positive feedback even though it isn’t your best article. At least you will get feedback in this great community! Go back to the hub after a while and if you still don’t like what you wrote, rewrite the article, improve it by adding text, or if nothing helps; un-publish the article! It has served its purpose and helped you out of writers block!
This is my way to get a positive flow when it comes to writing. It would be interesting to know how you do!
