Updated on September 8, 2015

Seek and Ye Shall Find Traffic!

Yahoo! Answers is a great way to improve traffic to your hubs, blogs and websites. Not only will it improve traffic it is fun too! You will be providing answers and you can also seek and find answers to your own questions as well. Building an account is free and easy. Once you advance beyond the first level any links you include will become active. These links can lead to the topics you write about. Thus, improving and generating traffic.

This hub will guide you through the quick sign-up process as well as tips for use.

Remember, seek, and ye shall find traffic!

How to Yahoo!

  1. Set up an account
  2. Ask Questions and Answer Questions
  3. Points and Levels
  4. Vote for Best Answer
  5. Tips & Tricks

Image of Current Registration Page

Step 1. Register!

Registering on Yahoo! is SUPER easy. Yahoo! gives you a choice of creating a new account or signing up with a current account from Facebook, Google or Yahoo! Just remember that the name you use will be the name on your profile.

Click here to Register or Log in - Yahoo! Answers

Yahoo! Answers has MANY categories

Browse Categories - Answer and Ask Questions

Once you have set up your account I encourage you to browse the categories on Yahoo! Answers. Find the areas that interest you the most. Most importantly - find the areas you write about! Use the keywords from your hubs, blogs or websites to find topics. As you continue your search you can begin answering or asking questions right away. "Best Answers" are chosen by the originator of the question and/or the voting public. Be sure to give great answers and include the link to your related hub. As readers seek answers and come across your response they just might click on your link as a source for additional information. Avoid being overly promotional and spammy. Yahoo! does have moderators and you want to be a good member of the community.

Note - Links will not appear hyperlinked until you reach 250 points (level 2). But, go ahead and include your links from the beginning and they will transpose when your level changes. It really does not take that long.

Points and Levels

How it works

  • Earn points and work your way up the ranks. Your primary goal should be to reach Level 2. Once you reach Level 2 your links will appear as an actual hyperlink to your respective sites or hubs.
  • Building up points is actually a rather easy process. Reaching Level 2 is doable in a very short period of time. I did it in less than two weeks with very little effort.
  • To the right of this text box are the point values as well as levels for you to evaluate the process.
  • Please be aware that you lose 5 points for every question that you ask. You might want to wait to ask questions until you reach Level 2.

Best Answer

Why do you want to be chosen as the Best Answer?

  • Your answer will be the first answer shown and will be featured as the Best Answer to the question
  • If your Best Answer is related to one of your hubs, blogs or sites you can include a link in your answer box (add the link when you answer the question - once the answer goes into voting or is chosen you can no longer edit it)

How do you get selected as Best Answer

  • voting - the Yahoo! community votes for the Best Answer. Incidentally, you earn 1 point every time you vote. You also earn 10 points if your answer is chosen. Yes, you CAN vote for your own answer (once).
  • author selection - the original author of the question can also select your answer as the Best Answer. This process supersedes community voting.

Yahoo! Tips & Tricks

  • Give good quality answers. If you have a related hub topic include the link in your answer's source box as a reference. (only include relevant links or you will eventually be banned)
  • When adding hub links be sure it includes a referral tracker. You want to get credit for anyone that signs up for HubPages. A referral tracker is the only way to assure you recruited a new hubber.
  • Be courteous. If something is inappropriate flag it. Don't rant and rave with an answer against a fellow community member. A rude or snippy answer puts you at risk of losing your account. If something is inappropriate just flag it and move on.
  • Be sure your answers and/or questions are clear and concise. Keep in mind that the purpose of Yahoo! Answers is to provide information to the community.
  • Check your "My activity" page and keep up with voting. Remember, once your item goes into voting you can vote as well. Voting usually closes on the 7th day unless the author chooses your answer as the Best Answer first.
  • Once you get the hang of Yahoo! Answers get SEO and keyword crafty. Build your answers around the SEO/keywords in your hubs. This combined with your link will make for a terrific back-link to your hub. Remember, Yahoo! is a MAJOR search engine and your creative answers can get you to the top of the search engine page. Use your FREE resources to the fullest!
  • REMEMBER DO NOT COPY YOUR HUBS! Do not copy your hub as an answer. It is against our HubPages TOS and you can lose your hub. Get creative instead and formulate an effective answer as well as including a link to your hub. Don't forget - the whole idea is to generate traffic TO your hub.

Enjoyed seeing this again and appreciate the update and share to highlight it for us. Am in a place that might really let me start with Yahoo! Answers now. The work certainly looks interesting. The main thing about this hub, though, is that I could move forward with confidence that what is written is authoritative. Thanks for that, too!

Hi Jacob9205, thank you for reading and commenting. I think yahoo answers is underestimated as a traffic tool. I was doing research this weekend for a variety of potential titles/subtitles and I came across Yahoo Answers more than once. Point being...they DO appear in searches.

      Best wishes on your endeavors

Excellent hub on how to use Yahoo Answers to get more traffic for my hubs, I've made it a favorite. I've only just started out , but I'm slowly building up my number of hubs so will look at using this to get some traffic since I seem to be getting very little!

Torrs13, I still think it is a great tool for getting the word out in whatever niche you write about. Google Analytics is still showing that I am getting a stream of traffic from my Yahoo Answers. Good luck to you.

Maggie.L The pleasure is mine. I appreciate the votes and comment. I do hope you have continued using Yahoo Answers.

One of the problems I've noticed with Yahoo Answers is that some people who post questions don't know if the answers they get and correct, and many times they select a stupid answer as best answer. This decreases the value of Yahoo Answers and I imagine Google is aware of that.

I'm already at level 2, but I didn't remember that we lose points for asking questions. I'm just going to stick to answering. I'm glad you mentioned that in your article.

I use WebAnswers when I can actually find time. I've been a lot less active there since I joined HubPages and obviously my AdSense income is suffering as a result. This Hub makes me wonder if Yahoo Answers would be better use of my time. I'll have to look into it.

I've bookmarked many of your Hubpages and just finished this one this morning. I would never have given Yahoo Answers a thought save for your Hubpage. I always wondered why Yahoo Answers was so popular on the Google results. No I know. It kind of looks like it could be fun.

Thanks for the informative Hub. I took notes. Now it's time to read your Hubpage on referral trackers.

beingwell, hmmmmm, not tot sure what may be happening with those violations. I suggest breaking up linked answers with non-linked. Answering every single question with your own subdomain can trigger red flags. Also, don't announce your username to others. Some people are just mean and flag if they know who you are. Best wishes to you.

softhard, hope thinks are working out. I need to revisit the site myself and answer a few more questions.

ashish04joshi, you are welcome. Best wishes to you.

2patricias, it is a great way to scatter your online presence and to also gain additional traffic.

old albion, Hi Graham, thank you so much. Yes, it is a helpful site and personally, I really think it is worth it to maintain the account.

yougotme, perhaps you have not reached the level where your links are active? I believe it is something like 250 community points. I do appreciate you stopping by to read and comment.

Happyboomernurse, it is interesting to me how all of a sudden I will get nice spurts of traffic from there. The site is also a regular sighting on my traffic reports. Although some say those links are 'no-follow' I have come across them in the search engines. Glad you came by.

CCahill, yes, those links will eventually 'light up' and activate once you pass the beginner mark. Consider giving it another try.

seotechnology, thank you, wishing you the best on your endeavors.

ITcoach, finding the right answer is not always easy. I usually just find a topic area that interests me and just scan through the questions. If anything it gives me some great leads to future hub ideas. It is not uncommon for me to jump from Yahoo Answers to the Google Keyword tool. Once I'm there a hub is started. So it does have many benefits other than finding a specific question/answer. I do appreciate you stopping by to read and comment. My apologies on my delayed response.

Thank you so much for explaining this so clearly! Since I don't have my own blog or other website, I've been struggling with how to generate outside traffic to my hubs. I have to admit I have some general confusion about whether Google sometimes penalizes you for creating too many backlinks to your own hubs, but it sounds like this is not a concern with doing Yahoo Answers, right? GeneralHowitzer - YA is great for added traffic, but I have noticed that it is not necessarily one for backlinks. Scroll up to ktrapp's comment above. However, I have on occasion seen YA responses on the search feed. Not sure how they decide what is 'follow' and what is 'not follow' in regard to YA and search engines. Regardless, I'm getting great responses on the links that I have posted. Traffic is traffic - right? :)

ITcoach - You are excellent for my ego! :) I don't frequent YA as often as I used to, but I do intend to work on it a bit more this weekend. I still see daily traffic from my answers 2 months ago though. Best wishes to you on YA

ktrapp - good to know. I look forward to reading it and adding it to one of my hubs. Perhaps my 'Hub Boosters' would be a good spot.

Actually, I have a dofollow/nofollow hub in the works. Hopefully, you will see it on your feed in a few days.

ktrapp - you TOTALLY read my mind. I was going to ask you how to do this. I knew it was somewhere on HP. This is extremely helpful. I'm going to use this and evaluate the various links I have on other sites.

Yes, Yahoo! answers is great for traffic, but not necessarily one for backlinks.

Thanks again - I greatly appreciate this and I hope the followers and readers of this hub read your comment. It deserves a hub of its own. Perhaps I'll add a little author's note at the end of the hub.

missolive - Go to one of your pages on Yahoo where you answered a question and posted a link. Then in your browser click view/source or view/page source. You will now be looking at all the code for the Yahoo page. Next, find your link's code. To find it easily search for the word missolive using CTRL F (or Command F on a mac). You will notice that rel ="nofollow" is included in the link's code. What that means is that when search engine robots crawl the web they don't follow those links, so they are not truly backlinks.

But Yahoo Answers is still a very valuable tool as you point out for getting traffic and so I use it regardless of whether or not it provides me with an actual back link. Maybe search engine robots don't follow the link, but humans do. And these humans may then become HubPage writers (using the referral tracking code that you have written about), share one of your hubs on their social network, or buy a product or click on an ad. I have gotten quite a bit of traffic this way.

      Great hub!

Very useful and informative! I never knew Yahoo answers could be a backlinking tool - it is always nice to add another tool to my resource toolbox. Voted up.

Great comment ktrapp - I have had more traffic. I appreciate the votes :)

BTW - I kind of tested the whole "nofollow" and did a keyword search on Yahoo of one of my YA links to my hub. I searched for the keywords in my link and I added the word "answer" - the link to my YA link did show up. (did that make any sense? lol)

Regardless, YA is great for traffic.

I added RedGage today - I like what I'm seeing.

This is great information. I have been writing Yahoo Answers for awhile now and it does generate hub traffic. The only thing is the links on Yahoo Answers are "nofollow" links so they won't necessarily build up as backlinks.

But traffic is traffic, and like you say it really is a lot of fun. There even was a Yahoo question once about where to buy a certain product which I knew was in one of my Ebay capsules. I answered the question and made an Ebay sale, as well.

I have enough points that any links I add are hyperlinked, but it never occurred to me to include them before I had enough points so that they would eventually be automatically hyperlinked when the point accumulation was enough. This was excellent advice and an excellent article.

steve8miller - Good point on the adsense revenue. However, I use Yahoo! for the fun and TRAFFIC. I use WebAnswers for income - can be fun too. Thanks for the hub tip. I'll add yours with Brett's and molometer in my WA folder.

Just Ask Susan - A real joy to see your name in my comment box! Yahoo! can actually be pretty entertaining. The traffic is an added bonus. I was analyzing my Yahoo! referral tracker yesterday and I like what I see. I see the potential for continued growth. Plus, I'm starting to find fellow hubbers as well. :)

readtoawakecom - Welcome to HubPages and thank you for stopping by to read and comment. YA does have categories in your niche of books and marketing. Make sure your responses on YA are relevant and that the link to your site is deemed necessary you will be banned - quickly.

I used to use Yahoo answers. I just do not like the fact that you do not earn money from Yahoo for answering the questions. I love WebAnswers as they share AdSense income. I also created a very detailed hub about WebAnswers you can check out if you are interested.

Now I am going to do this as driving traffic to my hubs is what its all about. Very informative hub thanks for the information here.

fpherj48 - I'm seeking the same WA questions/answers as you. Perhaps people were copying between WA and their hubs??? I can't see any other reason for it to be a problem. We might need to take this one up in the forums with molometer and Bret - they are fellow WA users. Let me know if you spot anything :)

Very useful, informative Hub....and I too am concerned about the WA comments in terms of adsense? Has someone looked into this thoroughly to prove or disprove this? I will truly appreciate knowing. I intend to open an acccnt. w/YA...but wonder....should I stop participating in WA? missolive, barbergirl, what say you?
