Angel blessings mean something
Who Are Squid Angels?
Some of the people behind the scenes who keep Squidoo an exciting and worthwhile place to hang out are called Angels. You may not see them around but then again if they choose to visit and leave a blessing they will make an impact on your lens that will see it jump a little in lens rank.
But they can do a lot more for you than this. Many angels give their time helping new Squids build better lenses. They are communicators and usually very active in the forums. Their support can help you get awards, such as a purple star or Lens of the Day (LOTD), both of which are rare and unique. But when you get them they send shivers through you because you know you are doing great work. There can only be 365 LOTD's a year and that's very few compared to the number of lenses built on a daily basis.
If you want to stay onside with an angel then make sure you thank her or him for any blessings or help bestowed, they love that. If you want help from an angel email them and ask as they will always repond to requests but don't go seeking blessings as that can be rather annoying. If you are just starting out then you can put the link to your lens in the Critique Forum as some angels visit there as well.
My Mission Statement
This is why I am a Squid Angel
A retired angel, aj2008, posted this request of the new angels when I was first appointed:
"In anticipation of the imminent announcement about who the new Angels are, I am just dropping by to ask the new Angels if they can give me some material for a new SquidLog article (http://squidlog.net/blog/columnists/ajs-musings) that I would like to write in celebration of your appointment. "
I feel it is right and proper to post my responses here for all to see and to make it my mission statement
Q. Why a Squid Angel?
A. Since I first came into Squidoo it has been a tonic that brings me back every day to spend most of my time on both building lenses and critiquing those of others. The quality and interest in the works reviewed is of such a standard that it is with pleasure that I post them in the Angel's forum for a blessing or two. Now with the power of an Angel they can be blessed by me and recommended for higher things, such as a purple star or LOTD..
Q. What am I Looking Forward to the Most?
A. Many new Squids produce great works but often they need a little help to make them extra special. As an angel I think they will respond to my suggestions and improve out of sight. In that way they will maintain the high standard of Squidoo and become as addicted to it as I am.
Q. Are you apprehensive about anything to do with your role?
A. No! Just the reverse. I am excited to be able to give back to a community that gives so much to me and others.
Q. What do you love most about Squidoo?
A. Its informality, the generous nature of its members, the friends made here, the ease of producing great lenses, the excitement of the awards, such as getting a purple star or a LOTD, and of course the lovely people who work behind the scenes to keep it such a great place. Everything about it is unique and special.
In conclusion perhaps it is also the fact that as a free publishing resource it allows you to make money and to support your interests without criticism or discrimination. Its charitable nature is a joy and its tools exceptional. Its an honor to give something back and hopefully keep the interest brewing for all its members.
Want My Blessing on Your Lens
Then adhere to some simple guidelines
Never do I expect anyone to do more or be better than myself and I know I have many failings but building a Squidoo lens is so easy that really anyone who can type and follow a basic plan can do it and come up with a masterpiece.
To help you there are a lot of places to find help on these subjects
Your Biography This is so important that not many will bless a lens where this is not completed. You need to tell us who you are, a bit of your background, possibly where you live, and so on. Also a picture either of yourself or what is called an Avatar, an image that will identify you to everyone. Please also activate your contact email as people like me might just need to send you a note occasionally about your lens, how to improve it or whether or not it has been awarded a purple star or better.
Photographs A lens is a masterpiece thanks to the tools that Squidoo provides. Get to know how to use those tools to your advantage. Make use of good images in the introduction and text modules. Every image must tell a story related to the theme of the lens. If you are publishing those of someone else then please credit the source, even if it is from a free site or the public domain. If they are from the same source then you only need to do this once.
The Text Not everyone has English as their first language and if this is you then try to get some help, usually from the Critique forum or from one of the senior Squids. Ask them to read over it and check for grammar mistakes, as that is the worst one. Syntax is also important as how you phrase a sentence can have a bearing on the understanding of what you are implying. e,g. 'The man bit the dog' is completely different to 'the dog bit the man'.
Table of Contents When I first built a lens I did not even know what that was. It is referred to as TOC and it was not long before I learned the importance of having a Site Map, another term for it, at the top of your page. Its rather like when you open a book and look at the index. It indicates whether or not the contents are worth reading.
Module Headings Every module uses a default heading which you must change. Here is you opportunity to use keywords to introduce this section of your lens. The wording should be kept to a minimum and each module address a separate issue within the subject, if possible.
Guestbook Yes, it is essential to have a place where your visitors can respond to your lens. Did they like it? Will it make a difference in their life? Does it impact on their thinking? and so on. People love to tell you and you must let them. Read my lens on Building a lens
Squidoo is a Family of Great People
Treat everyone with respect, the nicer you are in your attitude to them in the forums and so on the better you will fare here.
Please visit and critique other people's lenses because if you have not done this you get no blessing from me. The more lenses you visit the more you will learn and the more friends you will make.
The No Nos
Do NOT spam;
Do NOT plagiarise other people's work
Do NOT copy text and paste it in your lens as your own.
Do NOT leave nasty comments in forums or elsewhere
Do NOT behave badly
Write Good Stories
Provide your reader with a treat
It doesn't matter what your lens is about unless you tell us in your own words who, where, when, why and how in your introduction you may lose your reader. Say why you are doing a lens to give the audience the feel of your work. Who you are and what is your expertise or otherwise. If you are promoting your own business or books then say so up front.
Modules with images and brief sentences do not go down well and certainly lenses that are full of affiliate links and little else are a turn off.
A good written story should engage the reader in an expectation that reading on will benefit them in some way, There must be something here that will help them or change their thinking or even their life or i n the very least be entertaining. That's the message you need to come up with and the better you do that the more blessings you will get from me.
Discover how to write well and where to find good topics of interest to write about through Squidoo. You can type a subject into the search box for links.
You can send me an email if you are having trouble in this area and I will happily respond.
A final word on this is to edit and check all spelling. I am a great typo producer myself and understand that often it is only when something is pointed out to you that you can see it. That's where the Critique Forum comes in. Ask for a review for typos and you will quickly get lots of help. But don't forget that others need your help as well.
An Angel's Blessing is Something to Aim For
Not only does it reward you for your work but it shows others that you are doing good lenses worth the read.
You can post a link to your lens in the Angel's Forum if you think it is up to standard and ask nicely and it may be blessed, and sometimes by several of the squad.
Lens Ranks Well on Google
Angel's blessings give you a slight boost in ranking but traffic will give you more. You get that from Search Engines and by promoting your lenses outside of Squidoo. This is a brief video on the subject.
