   If you point the backlinks to your Hubs they will rank better in the search engine and your Hubs are what contain the actual content readers are looking for.  Backlink to your hubs with good descriptive anchor text.

   Individual articles!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  The thing is, backlinks don't matter half as much as they used to.

   I believe backlinks are important in any of the situations identified in the other answers.  Having backlinks to your hubs and your profile gain you more exposure.  Backlinks are also important in relation to a website.  The number of backlinks is not so much important as the source of the backlink.  The higher the ranking of the source of a backlink the better the individual ranking of your website, hubs or profile will be.
   
   Backlinks are part of the evaluation google and other search engines calculate when determining the rank of a site or anything else they measure.  The higher the quality the better the ranking.

   Your profile could certainly have some backlinks if you intended to direct the people who click it to be sent to it, but if you are talking about anchor text, keyword based links then you should definitely point them towards the post that features the corresponding keyword.
   
   Alot of people are now saying that backlinks do not matter anymore, but alot of the changes that Google has implemented to point their results away from backlinks only changed a very small portion of their search results (about 2%), so you can still count on strong backlinks using anchor text to help your pages/website/whatever rank in search engines for that term.

   They are supposed to point to the individual articles. Make sure you mix up the anchor text with variances of keywords, too.
   
   Backlinks to your profile certainly don't hurt, either. I build backlinks to my profile when I comment on blogs. I just put "Melanie" for the anchor text since it's my name though, so the only thing I would really rank for there, is my name.  Hehe.
   
   Westman Todd Shaw is definitely right about backlinks not mattering as much as they used to. Back in the day (pre-Panda,) you could write any junk on the Internet and get a zillion backlinks and, by doing so, rank for whatever you wanted. Now the quality of your writing matters a TON. Because of this, it's harder to rank by backlinks alone. This is ACTUALLY great for HubPages writers, even though after Panda things sucked a for a while. Now all we have to do is write great content and not worry so much about backlinks.

   Ideally they should point to your hub with the respective keyword as the anchor text. Backlinks to your profile are pointless. Not only will it not rank for anything except your name and username, they don't really generate any income for you.
   
   Profile pages on Hubpages are far too crowded if you ask me..
   
   @Wesman Todd Shaw  Quality backlinks matter much more than they used to. Backlinks are now assessed merely on quality; quantity was what mattered before Panda.

    I do believe it's important to add our profile into the mix. People can always check your profile from your article. Seeing who you are and what you do builds your credibility and shows you are a real person.

    They can point to either. Just try to vary the text of your posts/articles that link back, as search engines prefer unique posts. Also, be careful not to 'blast' you site with too many links, as this can looks like spamming or black-hat SEO ... which search engines don't like either. However, as you now have your own URL, your site should naturally build in rank and popularity, especially if you participate on Hubpages, as each post or comment acts like a backlink (internal) to your profile.
