Is our subdomain on hubpages like having a separate website? does this take away the benefits?

I have heard that hubpages ranks well on google, so it helps your hubs rank high in search engines. but now that there are subdomains to lessen the effect of other people's bad hubs on yours, does this also mean that you no longer have the benefits of other people's good hubs? is your subdomain now like having your own website, with no extra search engine ranking from the other hubs on hubpages?
