Is it a good idea to change your profile picture?

... or is it better to keep it the same? I know many people who claim that by changing you profile picture, readers will lose touch with the brand that they have known to love. Is that necessarily true? Does changing your profile picture alter the reader's perception?

I would imagine that changing your profile picture could have some negative results if you have a large amount of followers. Some people would probably wonder where you went and others would have no problem. I changed my profile picture back when I had around 50 or so followers with no negative results. In fact, I was able to gain a quicker following with the new picture. Seeing that you have less than 100 people following, I don't see any issue with changing it. People viewing your hubs from search engines won't really know a difference... or so I like to think. Good luck to you.

I totally agree with what Joe says, the only thing I would add is that if your image doesn't correlate with the majority of your hubs then it may be worth changing but other than that I think keeping it the same is the best option, people tend to associated your image with your work, especially if you become established.

I have no way of knowing if it makes a difference in the numbers, really.

All I know is that I do like to change my profile picture frequently --- mostly because I just get tired of looking at it after a while.

Also, I've sometimes wondered why other Hubbers don't change THEIR profile pictures, because I get sick of looking at the same old thing every time I read one of their Hubs.

Of course, it's not really a deal-breaker. If I like their Hubs, I wouldn't change my mind or anything based on the profile image.

I think JM's answer is also good.

So, I think the bottom line here is:  it's up to you. Just try out different graphics and things, and see how you and others feel about it.

I do look for some nice "eye candy" on a profile, and it's nice when a Hubber provides that, I think. It reminds me of the gracious folks who spend so much time and money decorating their homes for the holidays, so that others can enjoy the view as they drive or walk by. It's kind of a little gift to the universe.

I've also been driven away immediately by an ugly, nasty profile graphic or picture. I don't mean anyone's face is ugly --- just something offensive, nasty, boorish or obnoxious.

I, for one, am not much for visual branding (unless it's in art), and appreciate seeing something different. Having the same profile picture is like having the same screensaver; you get tired after a while. Not that I'm tired of yours. I'm going to change mine soon--I just can't decide to what; like, should it be something cool, weird...should it be a picture of me? I don't know. As of yet, I don't have much of a "brand", so I guess it's not a significant issue for me.
It would be nice to see a different profile pic, but at the same time your current one sort of matches your work... For instance, a lot of your hubs are kind of suspenseful, and entrancing; and your current profile picture is really dark and mysterious-looking (and cool! Wish I could get away with that).
I think your 'brand' is what exits your brain and ends up in your hubs, so changing the profile picture shouldn't be the apocalypse of your hub career. At least, not in my humble opinion.

Ofcourse not.. It is you and what you want to do.
Beside it is your Hub that counts not how you look
That's one thing I love about Hub, people love you
    just the way you are.

I guess I will be the odd one here.  I use visualization a lot when reading forums and posts online.  I associate a picture immediately with the person I know who is behind it without trying to remember the name.  Photos tend to stick in my memory much better.

I am new here, only a few days, however, in time, I would hope that when people see a new hub and see my picture there, they would have some concept of what to expect from my previous material.

Now this is just my perception.  I don't know about how it would impact traffic and such to your hubs.

I just tested myself.  I clicked on the "Home" tab up there in the upper left.  As I viewed the feed the pictures of the hub creator jumps out at me...easy to see and recognize...(well, if I knew the few I were looking at, lol.)  Now, the name shows up but pretty small and you have to "look" for it, versus the picture is just there looking back at you.

Again, if you are well published here, I would suggest you maintain the same photo for sure, as your readers will be looking for you photo in new hub listings, in comments in the forums and such.
