   What are backlinks and how do I use them?
   
   Newbie question I know! I've heard so much about them but can't quite get my head around what they are and how you use them!
   
   For example is it a case of say writing an article on InfoBarrel and linking to one I've written with a similar topic on here, or is there more to it?

   Backlinks are links from other websites that link to your main subdomain page on HubPages or to one of your individual Hubs.  Also, links from any other Hubber's subdomain count as external backlinks and help your webpages.  The importance of backlinks is that it helps your rankings on the Google search engine for your keywords.  Writer Fox, who has Hubs on HubPages, wrote a huge article about 'What is SEO?' that explains all about backlinks and what they do for you.  (Just type Writer Fox in the search box on HubPages and you should be able to find the article.)  I'm not supposed to publish the link here.  Anyway, that article just won the HubNuggets award and it does contain some important information for you.
   
   About InfoBarrel:  I don't know anything about that site, but I just looked at it and it doesn't seem to allow author-generated backlinks in the articles posted.  There are many, many article sites that will let you post backlinks in articles.  GoArticles.com is one.

   Backlinks or Inbound links are links directed towards your website. Usually higher the number of quality backlinks higher the probability the specific site is crawled by search engines. In simple words if we have higher number of relevant backlinks to our site from other reputed sites like hubpages or ezinearticles search engines give our site more credit, which means more traffic.What we have to remember is that, the more the quality of the site that is referring to our site through a link ,the more is the credit given to our site by the search engines.

   A backlink is a very simple thing.  All a backlink is is a link on another site that leads to somewhere else.
   
   So a backlink to Facebook on Hubpages.com looks exactly like THIS:
   
   http://www.facebook.com/groups/126222100777673/
   
   A Backlink to Hubpages.com on Facebooks looks just like what you'd see from anyone hitting the "Like" think for Facebook up above here.
   
   A backlink merely suggest to someone," hey, look at this web page here!"
   
   Some backlinks have some value that others do not have.  Look at Facebook - a backlink to YOUR hubs there is a very good idea.  It's a wonderful idea because there are TONS of people on Facebook at all hours of the day.  A backlink on Myspace is not nearly as good an idea as is a backlink on Facebook.
   
   Guess what?  I still put backlinks on Myspace too because internet web spiders still index links on that site - so while backlinks are really good things to spend some time creating - not all of them have the same value.

   Backlinks from Facebook are NoFollow and, therefore, basically worthless.

   WriterFox I wouldn't say no follow links are worthless. If they are bringing you traffic they are worth more then some crappy do follow links. It is all about what that link will bring to your site and having good no follow links to your site could bring you quality traffic that will stay on your site a bit longer and prob actually like it or plus 1 it so those are huge factors in getting your site ranked.
