   You should get back links as long as you write informative information. That is what I have always been told.

   You'll probably get a steady trickle of viewers even without backlinking; this is called organic traffic.  Don't expect very high numbers though unless you promote yourself and your content.

   Yes, you should get traffic from people searching for topics you write about via search engines.  Try to write your Hubs so that they are Search Engined Optimized (SEO) to increase their rankings in search engines.  I just wrote a Hub about how to implement SEO in Hubs.
   
   I have recently received massive traffic for a Hub I wrote about the upscoming Facebook IPO (much more than any backlinging as provided), so I know search engines can be a good source of Hub views.

   The HubPages site is set up so that you get hundreds of back links without doing anything.  Although back linking hubs certainly won't do you any harm, in most cases it won't make much positive differrence either.  (This doesn't hold true for other sites, however).
   
   Focus on writing about things that people want to read, but where there aren't lots of articles already and you will get views (make sure that your title and tags are good too, of course!)

   Sure, you will get views and your viewers may be limited to hub pages alone. But the desire of every publisher is getting his or her hub/article indexed by search engines. What backlinking does is that it increases the credibility and findability of your hub. The search engines traces the links from whereever you palced the link back to your article or hub. hence, backlinking= More traffic, More page views and more income

   Yes, you will get views even if you don't back link. But you should seriously consider it because it can make the difference from $1 a month to $20 a month from only two solid back links (provided they don't disappear from the site you linked them on). The difference is drastic, but if you aren't here to make money, just to write for fun, then its far less stressful if you ignore back linking.

   If you select topics using the Google Keyword Tool that have low competition and high search frequency and you write an interesting, well-written hub, you will get views fairly fast. Humor is particularly effective at generating traffic.
   
   Backlinking is just about useless if you are generating those backlinks yourself. Organic backlinking is by far the best and is something that happens over time to good, well-written articles.
   
   If you want to write poetry or fiction, odds are you won't ever receive a lot of views unless you get a national award or something. If you write articles on subjects that people are searching for, then you'll get views.

    Thanks for all the helpful advice everyone! I find it interesting that this question received a variety of contrasting viewpoints, some in favor of back linking, some essentially saying don't waste your time with it. Hmmm....what to make of it all. One more question: If you had to choose just one or two places two backlink sites, which ones would they be?

    "Ever green" hubs will regularly get views without any back linking on your part because you'll get traffic from search engines, not just hubbers.

    I'm still getting the hang of this "backlinking"/S.E.O. business but here's what's been working for me:
    
    I post links to my Hubs on Facebook and also at a number of discussion forums I belong to that pertain to the stuff I write about (mainly music and movies).
    
    Posting links on the message boards at IMDb (Internet Movie Database) has worked out well for me too.
    
    I guess if you don't backlink at all, you'll eventually get *some* outside "organic" traffic via Google and other search engines as they find your stuff, but that may take longer than you're willing to wait.
    
    Of course, you might get lucky and someone might discover your Hub and pass it around via e-mail.
