Why respond to questions and not share information that lends itself to the discussion at hand?

Quite frequently, I'm noticing responses to questions that purposefully add no benefit to the topic. In fact, the answers are oppositional to the question. Out of curiosity, wouldn't it be more beneficial to the community as a whole to just skip those questions and find one of the many other available questions to answer that will invoke relevant insights to the topic? What are your thoughts? Are you noticing this too, or is it just me?
