I don't really think there's such a thing as having a good number of followers. Currently, I have 45, and I've been here for about 3 months. Someone I've seen on here has been hubbing for just about the same time and has nearly 150. However, they have written far more hubs than I have, so in the grand scheme of things I'd say the following I have is pleasing to me. My reason is not so much how many people read my work, but rather the feedback I get. With probably the exception of a couple of hubs, I'll probably get between 3 to 6 comments for every hub I publish. Even though that's not a lot of comments for the number of followers I get, every feedback is incredibly positive and useful. It gives me encouragement that others out there care enough to come by, see what I have to say, and tell me what it is what they like about my work and why. This keeps me going with writing and helps me improve my work. So I would say try not focus so much on how many followers you get, but rather the quality of the feedback you receive from the ones who take the time to view your work.
