Do you think that too many people are just leaving generic comments, without actually reading your hub fully,  in order to improve their score and level up the commentator accolade?

I hope not but there is no way to tell.  When I comment on a hub it is usually pretty general expressing my enjoyment of the hub and writing style.   Frankly if someone viewed my hub and that view is recorded as a page view, whether they read it or not is really up to their own conscience.

I'm sure of it. If I think that is all they are doing I don't approve those comments.

I can only speak for myself.

    No.

If I'm going to make the effort to check someone's work out, I will read every single word. Granted, there are times when I wince as I stumble across spelling and grammatical errors, but I do my best to tune in to the essence of what that person is sharing.

In my comment, I'm offering feedback, encouragement, and--on very few occasions--constructive suggestions as to what an author could do to embellish or elaborate upon a theme.

I'm not sure about the drive of others to comment the way they do.  I welcome all comments, no matter how small.  Somebody taking the time to write anything for me is special.

That said, I do receive some fairly blah comments sometimes, as well as fanmail.  It got so bad for a while that I wrote a hub on how to leave fanmail:

All our comments can't be perfect soliloquies. I appreciate all comments readers leave, even if some are somewhat blah. Sometimes I think my own comments are blah, but I want writers, especially those that I follow, to know that I have read them. What is disappointing to me is the readers who don't leave comments at all, especially those who claim to be "followers".

I am guilty of leaving bland comments myself. but i never criticize the grammar or punctuation for that is the learning process. i think that this type of comment is trying to make the other poet feel inferior to them and is uneeded.
Just to leave a two word comment shows at least you were there. a comment means , if you took the time to leave a comment , you usually read the work.

No doubt about it, there are some keen minimalists out there who are sort of mercenary in the way they comment. I don't pay too much attention to it if it occurs on other hubs but when my hubs are involved it irks a bit and I may deny, depending on who wrote it.
You could look at this issue and say 'a comment is a comment is a comment' and put another notch on your stick but ideally comments should encourage feedback, debate and interaction and have a bit of meat on them. Many don't.
If HubPages could rate comments and not simply give accolades for quantity that might encourage more thoughtful words in those little boxes?
    Thanks for the question.

I really enjoy every comment I receive. However, I am new and I have never received a comment that I thought was too short.

On the other hand, sometimes I have such a hard time trying to figure out what to comment on other people’s hubs. I comment on almost all hubs I read, but sometimes I have very little to say. I try to keep it a minimum of three sentences per comment. Nonetheless, I sometimes I feel that they are too generic despite my attempts to personalize them.

I hope that no one thinks I am only looking to level up in the commentator accolade!

When I read a hub I try to leave feedback that is specific to the hub I read. I am sure there are people that hop around and leave generic comments, but people that try to take lazy shortcuts for the sole purpose of increasing Hubscore or whatever will find it ten times harder to achieve it. So let them leave generic comments, its up to us personally to make sure they are not approved on our hubs. Its easy to tell whether or not something is good quality, lets make them work for it!

I would hope that my followers would be honest and fortright with their comments...as I am with theirs...I guess we must hope that because WE ALL have the same common interests and passion for the words that we would be true to each other...just my thoughts....

I haven't seen this personally on any of my hubs, but I know sometimes it is hard to know what to say. Sometimes it takes longer to leave a reply than it does to read the  hub itself.

About the only time I have felt that someone was just making an appearance was a gal (I won't say her name), but the only comment she ever made was "Great hub". She has not stopped by to visit me yet, but hopefully she would be willing to invest slightly more than that.

Perhaps it's just me, but I like to engage. And, to be quite honest, I am not a big fan of people "following" without giving a reason for doing so. To date, I do not believe I have ever followed anyone, without telling them why I have done so.
