Is anyone else getting a lot of people requesting you to follow them in the fan mail comments?

I have had about three people recently leave comments that ask me some variation of "Follow me because I have have followed you."  My first reaction is to deny the fan mail and to not follow them.  I don't mind following new people, but not when that request shows up in the fan mail.  They were all new Hubbers according to my email notifications., but I really have not looked too closely at the people.  Am I being unreasonable?

If they are new, they are probably following tons of people to try to build up their group of followers. If it's obvious that they are only following you for that reason, then it's certainly not unreasonable for you to not follow them. Although personally I will follow people who follow me unless they never publish anything.

I got a request today like that. But this person wasn't a new hubber. They'd been on HP the same amount of time as I have but still asked me that even though on my profile page I said I don't respond to requests for that. I just denied the Fan Mail and  went on. I did look at the person's profile page just to see what they write about and to get a gauge of them, but I would've done that even if they didn't ask me that. Personally, I think it's rude. This is not a social media space like Twitter, we write for various reasons and to also reveal parts of ourselves online. While it would be nice to have an ample following, it's not worth playing the back and forth game of following people just to get readers.

I have not received any requests to follow someone through my fanmail. I think a lot of people put a lot of emphasis on how many followers they have. While it is important, I think newbies tend to gravitate towards trying to get as many followers as possible because they think they will earn more money that way.

I don't think you are being unreasonable. There are many ways to support a new person or even a veteran than just by following them. I think you should follow someone because you are interested in their writing, or who they are as a hubber, not just because they ask you to.

I have received some like this, but as Novel states, you should follow only those you have an interest in reading their posts.

The only basis I use for those I follow is does what they write strike a chord with me. I have never asked another hubber to follow me and wouldn't if they ask me especially in a fan mail post.

Fan mail is for those you are a fan of. Those who add something to your life. It is to let them know how what they write affects you.

Why would anyone ask for a follow in fan mail? Don't they realize these are meant to be displayed with pride on the writers profile?

No, I don't think you are being unreasonable. I have had a few request to follow in my fan mail recently, and I deny any fan mail that is just a request to follow or that contains a link. Fan mail is definitely not the place for soliciting followers. Even if I deny the fan mail, I do usually look at that person's profile to see what they are about. If something about their profile is of interest to me, I will go ahead and  read one of their hubs.

No. If someone says that on my page, I delete the comment and ignore them. That is considered rude from my standpoint and will not be tolerated on my page.

Can't say i've had anyone requesting me to follow them, but certainly wouldn't deny them the simple pleasure of a click now and then..if that's all that's asked of me ..life's pretty good and it's bringing a little sunshine into their life..what's to lose..who does it hurt....
Some hubbers have thousands of followers others, such as moi, only have a few, why not share the love!
Go on..click away..follow madly..bring a little happiness into the world of the lonely hubber!
