This is a tricky question to answer because as I see it traffic on the internet falls into three categories:
1. Short term trending - a hot topic, a big sporting/international event/news where journalistic type hubs can gain a tremendous amount of views in a matter of hours/days then fade sharply away. So, catch the wave and go to google trends and try to write short sharp hubs that are cutting edge, then spread them on social sites!
2. Medium term - includes seasonal and recipe/travel hubs that bring in traffic over say, a six month maximum. Any topic will do as long as it's relevant to the season/calender event/festival.
3. Long term - the evergreen hubs on any topic that are sustainable and hold the attention of the reader.
Promotion of a hub is almost as important as content and quality - this is unfortunate but is the nature of the internet and the ranking process - so good quality links, SEO, tags and summary, posting on blogs/forums/social networks and regular updates are all important.
I do hope this helps.
The very best of luck.
