Update, update, update. You can't really write a piece of content and leave it there to spend the rest of its life receiving hundreds or thousands of hits a day; the content needs to be refreshed and updated, as Google loves fresh and updated content. You will always get more paying customers through search engines than you will on Hubpages, and bear in mind therefore that advertising internally to Hubpages users is nice (when seeing comments and increased traffic) but it doesn't help to support your HP income.
Whenever you update a hub with real fresh content (not just by hitting edit and then publish, but by actually adding content to the hub) send it out on Twitter, post it to Facebook and Google+ or Pin it, if you have Pinterest. These things will all help to get you moving forward.
You will also want to work on building good, proper backlinks and practicing good SEO. I'm terrible at this last as keyword research has proven an elusive subject to me, but there are Internet resources for you to learn from; maybe you'll pick something up that I have not or that I don't understand.
