Is using an imag on HubPages commercial?

I read that even those images that are in the public domain may not be used for commercial purposes.  Well if we earn a few pennies on HubPages would that be considered "commercial"?

I don't think so. Commercial is usually for resale or use in logos, banners and flyers etc..

On Hubpages, it is fine to use legally used, correctly attributed images. If you are worried, take your own photos. Find a photo that you like on the net and recreate it to the best of your ability.

I found this all to difficult so I only use photos I have taken myself to be on the safe side.

Yes. If you know the image is copyrighted or trademarked and you republish in without permission and some how that benefits you without compensation back to the owner that is a problem. Remember file sharing with absolutely no profit is still an infringement.
Probably for you and me, we would be honored if someone copied our work. But if it were how we made our living and it cut into that, probably not so honored. If you are reading a notice that says in effect "may not be used for commercial purposes". Well that is superfluous as it cannot be used at all, without permission. If they give you permission for non-commercial -- that would really best translate into private. No publishing.
Anyhow there is not really a yes or no answer in general, it is more a case by case issue. ie extremely expensive. So avoid it and do not do it.

I found if the picture is now for reuse usually The hub will let you know if the picture cannot be used.. that is what I found out..

I do not feel using an image on hubpages is a commercial action.  Images sometimes helps to project the subject of a hub rather than any picture being placed in a hub.

In regards to your statement about using public domain images being a commercial activity I do not feel it is.  Publich domain images are just that. They can be freely used by us as writers.
