James, the best way I know is to engage in a diligent work ethic here on HubPages that involves a dedication and commitment to an immense amount of writing about the things you're most passionate about. Even if a reader doesn't normally gravitate towards the topics you write about, he or she will certainly identify with your passion.
That said, getting a loyal following, let alone huge numbers of followers, is not an overnight thing.
Some attempt to do so by following hordes of people, but the contrived nature of such a strategy only serves to reflect the superficiality of the person doing it...and believe me, the residents of this literary community are some of the most brilliant people I've ever had the pleasure of encountering, and they will collectively sniff one's superficiality out and drop that person like a rock into the depths of the Hubsville Phantom Zone.
No, the best way, in my opinion, is to write well, write a lot, and treat your fellow writers with respect, courtesy, sincerity, gratitude, and the evergreen gift of loyalty.
That, my friend, is how you can eventually get lots of followers.
Best wishes and earnest prayers for your success here on HubPages!
