    Is it 'legal' to Photoshop an image I got off the web (via sites like WikiMedia) and have rights to?

    A lot of images, even ones you don't have to pay for, such as on Wikimedia, still have a license (commonly a Creative Commons license). That license identifies the requirements of using that image, which can include attribution (identifying the author of the image), non-commercial (you can use image but not to make money), no derivatives (can't modify the image), and share alike (you have to share the image with the same or similar license as the original). You can see the licenses here: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/

    I picked this random image as an example from Wikimedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Cathe … e_Selo.jpg If you scroll down you'll see the license and the license holder. This particular image is licensed with the attribution and share alike requirements. What that would mean is you could use the image and modify it even for commercial purposes but you would have to give credit to the original owner and offer your new image under a similar license.

    If you posted an image that belonged to you on Wikimedia, would you want someone to use it without your permission?
    It's ok to use an image according to its license. But if you cannot find the license, what then?
    I look for public domain images and modify them to my purpose. http://www.public-domain-image.com/
    But there are times when you can use a copywritten image - without modification. It's called 'fair use' and allows writers to use product images to promote the product. It is still better to get permission though. Just email the owner if you can find him or her.
    Also, be sure to check with HubPages Learning Center ( http://hubpages.com/learningcenter/Pict … os-in-Hubs ) to find the correct way to use photos and images in a hub.
