When it saw me it ran back into its hole which it was far from. But if I hadn't came along I am sure it would have had a nice leisurely afternoon and it probably did once I left. The temperature was around 60 but has since fallen about 30 degrees but does that matter in the science of the groundhog and his hole? You think I am looking at an early spring from groundhog radar?

Yes, that could be, I will notice for them in a couple weeks, would love to get picture of them all!
Thank you Eric, that is such a nice thing to say. I suppose you are right. He had a nice day out and now he is holed up again! lol
Didn't know they came out of hibernation for a drink but I can tell you as much as it has rained here lately all he had to do was stick his tongue out that hole, bet that was the first day it hadn't rained in a week! lol But maybe so!
I think they can awaken on a relatively mild winter day, come out briefly and return to their deep winter sleep. Skunks do this as well.
I bet they don't come out up there do they before spring? I sure wouldn't. I am use to little to none of that cold snow! So are my groundhogs probably. I bet on the biggy they see their shadow this year, how bout you?
I think they're in what's called a torpor...not quite as deep as hibernation. They're more easily disturbed and it's not uncommon to see them once in a while in winter. I hate snow, and we're getting a foot of it tonite :( Can't wait for Spring.
Ew well that would be terrible to live in it and hate it but I once did and it is no small task always having to get to & from work in it! Poor old ground hogs, what are they good for anyway? lol
