If you have ever had your content copied you will notice a small red c in a circle next to the hubs title in your account. From my experience this doesn't appear until several months later. Yes I had one copied and it had been published for about 7 months before Hubpages alerted me.
I have just tried copyscape as you suggest. I think you are correct, we as authors need to keep on top of it.
COPYSCAPE has a free version that limits you to 10 searches/ day, and a pay version with unlimited searches. If you don't have much to check, free is good. I like free stuff. lol. If I see alot of copying, then I'll think about the pay version.
Sometimes it can take months to be notified. Best to check yourself using a program such as Copyscape as RachaelOhalloran suggested.
