I have such a problem with these! I am not too sure others use them right always either so I thought someone may have a way that would be simple and easy to remember. In 20 words or less. Just kidding.

I like your little poem, Meg. Since "effect" is rarely used as a participle, it is a good way to remember.
I have forgotten something told me years ago to keep it straight but just cannot remember what it was. Something like effect being physical comes to mind but really makes no sense to me now! lol
I am gonna try the noun thing but not sure that will do it for me how about you? What affect does it have? What effect does it have? I am still stuck! lol I do hope a bell rings and we get it!
"What affect(verb) does it have?" is like asking "What align(verb) does it have?"
And "What effect(noun) does it have" is like asking "What alignment(noun) does it have?"
Using a verb does not make sense, so the noun "effect" is correct.
Thanks Venkatachari! That is what I was looking for; I could only remember effect had to do with physical but none of the detail. That will make it easier!
