First you should decide which kind of guitar you want to play.
My favorite is the Classical Guitar, famous for Spanish Flamenco music. I think this is the best one to start with but if you're more interested in pop, country or folk music Steel-string acoustic guitars might be best. There are two main types of acoustic guitar namely steel-string acoustic guitars and classical guitars (nylon strings). Steel-string acoustic guitars produce a metallic sound that is a distinctive component of a wide range of popular genres.
Fredrick Noad used to have a show on TV that taught Classical Guitar which I learned in the 1970's and though he is dead now you can get his products online at http://www.noad.com/index.htm. His books are the best! I liked him because he teaches technique, reading music and gets you playing songs right away. You may find some of his old shows teaching Classical Guitar on YouTube like this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S03DrP2dBiA&li... After learning the basics in Classical Guitar moving on to the others is easy, easier than the other way around.
If it were me and I wanted to save money I'd search You tube or the internet for teaching videos first and watch what you find, learn what you can from different sources, what ever is free, and then you may like one in particular and want to buy their products.
Once you master the basics there are many other guitar types like electric or twelve string that can be fun to play: http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Guitar/Different_Type...
You can't go wrong with Noad and he keeps it interesting by teaching Spanish songs which you can entertain your friends with.
