Do you agree or disagree with the new suggestions for deleting and editing comments? Why or Why not?

So now it turns out that we should have been deleting comments all along! Google drops our page rank because of bad comments - comments that do not ADD to the hub, Q&A, or Forum posts. Will you agree with the new suggestions or disagree and leave all the trashy comments around to hurt your rankings?

Yes and no. I've always found it a bit frivolous just to write "Good hub". Debate and discussion about the actual topic allows the keywords to be said and provides more info on the topic.
So it makes sense. However I am a bit weary about deleting some of them because I actually care about some of my followers on my accounts and don't want them to feel as if I am being rude.
I guess I am a bit undecided on the issue.

I think it depends on if one is writing here to earn some money, or if they are here as a hobby, or if they are here to find friends, or here to troll. It's a difficult decision for most of us. But HP has a point about editing comments.

For more information on who, what, when, where, why, and how to edit comments, please see my hub on "Why do hub authors delete comments" at http://hubpages.com/community/Why-Do-Hu … e-Comments
I have provided a great chart to help you decide whether to keep or delete a comment.
And this should encourage you as a participant in the HP community to IMPROVE your comments! It's not punitive to get a badly written comment deleted.
It is an invitation to do better!

This sudden"suggestion" from HP, in reality is much more than what meets the eye. Perhaps clever of them but more than likely a somewhat candy-coated way 4 HP 2 pass the buck 2 the writers 2 delete & "clean up" the toxic comments (insults, attacks & disrespectful disagreement) that R repeatedly left by those who feel the comment section is a free-for-all 2 FORCE their beliefs, ideals, political leanings as well as their lifestyle upon EVERYONE. Bold, nasty, demeaning, taunting, insane & threatening ~ does not seem 2 register with HP when they read it in Blk&wht. What is it they're afraid of in terms of banning these people who offer nothing 2 HP but the aforementioned?

Specifically, HP is well aware of the constant harassment, ranting, raving & irrational preaching done by unstable religious zealots. The insults & taunting & degradation of one's political stance as well. While HP is not the platform 4 this & numerous writers have stated their disgust & reported their complaints, HP does not utilize their power 2 STOP this incessant insanity & simply silence the guilty parties.
Apparently, they wait in hiding until writers have had enough of the BULL, become angry and defensive. When the serious writers who wish 2 engage in discussion & sharing have finally told the zealots 2 cease their annoying & unacceptable behavior. Then outrageous as it is, HP will place a ban on those who have finally spoken out in defense of being badgered!  Does this not put us in mind of the Middle Eastern Radical Islamic Extremists who "Stone women rape victims 2 death 4 shaming their families??!..same ludicrous rationale!
Now, it seems HP wants all of us 2 review our hundreds of hubs & thousands of comments 2 DELETE any comments that don't happen 2 apply directly 2 hub content.  Further, they suggest we THANK OUR FELLOW HUBBERS FOR COMMENTS, "PRIVATELY" ?? I do NOT think so, HP. Do U even realize what U are suggesting we do? Y should we & Y would we? It is HP's responsibility 2 respond 2 the reports & complaints & handle this with the guilty parties. In one fell-swoop U could eliminate these individuals & every toxic thing they've ever written. U want 2 be loved & accepted by Google.Take care of matters in this regard. Hubbers also have a responsibility to delete toxic comments immediately. I do, but I will not delete comments from my readers & followers who leave sincere, benign comments. Hubbers: delete the "crazies" Bcuz HP does not have our backs. This is clear.

HP staff is limited by the sheer volume of bad comments and commenters. We are all going to have to do our part to clean up the comments around here. Help them to help us.

My point is not about that, Lela. I've always kept my own comment threads free from garbage & agree we ALL should. I'm saying when numerous reports go in about the same specific party w/ the same complaint, HP needs act, eliminate & clear it

I have read where too many writers claim they won't DELETE due to "support of free speech." They R "proud" of this but should not be here on our site due to the damage the garbage does overall. Yes, we have a right & responsibility to delete toxi

U know full well, at least ONE of many who R allowed to continue w/ insane ranting, insulting & repeated illogical quotes. Y don't OP's simply delete every single one? Bcuz THEY R part of the problem perhaps? HP should deal with this, Lela.

Yes, they have free speech, but we have editorial responsibility. They can write whatever they want to on their OWN hubs, questions, and forums. But the owner of the content needs to monitor that content for crap. We take out our own trash!

Lela..Again, I hope it is obvious to U that I AGREE w. U on this point. Do U agree that when writers do not delete the trash & writers have reported & complained numerous times that HP is responsible to take care of the matter? That's my poin

You know what would happen to you or I if we constantly beat on people w/ the same garbage in every thread, 50 times, over & over?  It would be "ByeBye" Austin & fpherj48. How is this being allowed to go on? What's the secret?

I don't know their secret. I have complained about those people time and time again. I have not seen such unprofessionalism from staff regarding the problems we have seen with those people. U know who they are, staff knows too. I don't get it.

I only delete spam like the fortune tellers ads, I let the ranters dig thier own grave but I did not realize it lowered my rating.  That's crazy.  Why should other people's comments lower my hub?

    10. Austinstar profile image85
Austinstarposted 8 years agoin reply to this

Because trolls do not leave quality comments. They incite anger and usually go off topic which lowers the algorhythm for scoring a hub or a web site.

I have always been deleting statements & comments that DISTRACTS from questions & hubs as such statements & comments aren't related to questions & hubs.  However, there is nothing much to do in forums if a person makes an unrelated remarks, we really can't delete it.

We do need the power to delete forum comments. They are some of the worst offenders for bad comments and trolls.

I think it is an advancing step by hubpages on the path of progression. Suppose, an internet user reads your hub and finds comments like : "Nice Hub" or "anything unrelated to the article published. They will think like the website HP is a social network or weakly moderated by owner. This will drop your page rank in google. So the new suggestions are beneficial for both the author and HP as I think about this.
This is solely my personal belief.

I think you are on the right track. We need "beneficial" comments, not crap from trolls and argumentative people.

I think its much better to delete a comment rather than to edit it because you will totally change the author's point of view about the topic.  Then if that negative comment can greatly affect the page rank of a post, well its better to delete it.

At times though, bad comments can spice up the conversation between followers/commenters of the topic being discussed.

Bad comments do often stimulate more comments, but that can also mean a penalty from the search engines.
