Don't feel bad. I haven't published any hubs at all. But I'm relatively new to HubPages. Still, I have a horrid approval rating so far. I'm a journalist by trade. Let me point out a few observations I've seen on this site.
Most of the hubs getting lots of activity are on subjects that are controversial. These include topics like religion, politics, homosexuality versus Christianity, using sex toys and generally anything that gets the blood boiling. Considering you live in the U.K, maybe you could get the latest dirt on the movie scene. And royalty is always a hot topic. But controversy is what gets "hits" on your hubs.
Another hot item on HubPages are "how-to" articles. Drawing from one's own experiences is the best, as that provides a ground level School of Hard Knocks perspective that people appreciate. Brie Hoffman just published an interesting how-to on being a single parent, for example.
The bottom line is that you've got to hit the hot buttons. What's current, what's new, or what's going to be the latest always stirs activity. Use good keywords.
And don't be concerned about getting down and dirty (within HubPages guidelines). You can capitalize on that.
Here's another idea: Have a regular "beat" like a reporter. Cover things that interest you like theater, movies, or music. Imagine that you are a reporter writing a society column for a local newspaper and you have to fill the page. But don't make it bland. Remember that people want to be entertained and amused -- like nobody has a life and you have to provide one for them (which is almost true).
Anyway, if it makes you feel any better include me among your list of followers. And I'll check your stuff daily.
